FIGHT GODDAMNIT

FIGHT FIGHT FIIIIIIIIGHT

It didn't try to copy michael chrichton's Sphere enough, is what went wrong

What? Was a good film. Ed Harris is an underrated actor. For some kino watch his knightriders.

- Shoot was a nightmare and made everybody miserable
- Wrong composer
- Wrong cast
- Cameron was high on his own reputation and thought repackaging a story he wrote as a teenager without a compelling structure was worth blowing an at the time fortune on

Apart from that it's a pretty good movie and like everyone else I'm still waiting for the Blu Ray

Attached: 18lq2c44s4w15jpg.jpg (2048x1536, 597K)

Apparently everything did during production, but the extended edition is pretty good

In terms of feasibility of shooting the damn thing it's right up with Apocalypse Now. Miracle it was finished at all.

the very end (both versions)

otherwise it's kino although a lesser one in the cameron pantheon

i can see why the shoot made everyone depressed but this is such a cool set and it still looks amazing on film

Theatrical: unsatisfying ending, something is clearly missing because Bud goes in then comes out so wtf happened inside

Special Edition: it's not on BluRay yet, maybe never

I cant find this movie anywhere. Is there a reason? I dont like dl because the quality is horrible.

there is a pretty damn good documentary about it - "Under Pressure : Making Of Abyss"
worth the watch I believe it's still on youtube

they don't want people seeing it because it reveals dark truths they hide from the common man

I haven't watch it but I can already tell it's gonna trigger my thalassophobia

>What went wrong?
>Advances filmmaking, literally invents new technology that people use to this day.
pick one.

Is this as good as Aliens?

But I have seen it already. I just want to watch deep sea sci fi :^(

youtu.be/rpzPFAi-rTU

I just watched this vid about the making of.

Building sets for a big movie it's such a lost art. But I can understand why modern movies are using alot of greenscreen now. The filming of the abyss was so fucking insane and dangerous.

No way

It is good though

Attached: il_570xN.954424242_e8qp.jpg (570x771, 90K)

That's a shit poster

The stories about crew members falling asleep underwater in their diving gear still freaks me out

Wrong

Attached: Deepcore_12.jpg (1169x781, 74K)

It turned to shit after Michael Biehn's character dies. Up until that point it was really good.

too long
yet also too short because they cut the ending

Foul-mouthed cigarette-smoking tough woman.
Psychopathic murderous military men.
Benign alien.
Pure ripoff of Avatar, and equally awful.

>But I can understand why modern movies are using alot of greenscreen now.
Because set builders have unions and hourly rates
While the CGI artists have no such protection and you can order them to redo work as many times as you like and claim its part of the original contract you paid for

she didn't smoke
nobody smoked, they couldn't due to the oxygen mix
don't fucking lie
and she wasn't foul-mouthed either

Agree.
Nothing went wrong OP. It's my favourite James Cameron movie and that includes T1 and T2. Comfy underwater movie with a good message.

youtube.com/watch?v=IJHcD0kHTGk

Nothing, it was pure kino.
>Ed Harris eating cabbage and making himself puke with his own farts
>Based Jim made Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio piss herself in the pool and break down crying
>Test run of technology later used in T2 and Titanic
>Abyss ayliums will turn up in Avatar 2

>>Abyss ayliums will turn up in Avatar 2
wut

not enough aliens and no sequel

didn´t several people almost drown multiple times during the shooting of the movie?

It's been a while so maybe I'm mixing it up with Avatar. That's how similar those two are.

Don't forget guys that The Abyss came out in a very crowded year
Batman was the biggest film
The was also Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade
Ghostbusters 2
And a bunch of others

They built puppets for accurate underwater motion capture so they'll probably have all glowy fins and shit like the fiber optic puppets they built for the abyss

Attached: The-Abyss-NTI-alien-1.jpg (559x600, 61K)

Ed Harris definitely had a very close call during the water breathing sequence
The helmet had a trick hatch that could be flipped up (it was also tinted pink to create the illusion of that oxygenated solution) so that between takes he could be given an airhose - after take the dive assistant gave him the hose upside down and with each breath he got a mouthful of water
He was struggling with the guy trying to get it out of his mouth and the guy kept pushing it back in and he get getting water
Cameron saw what was going on, swam over and got the hose fixed up and sent the dive assistant up to the surface

how the fuck can they have these manta ray bodies with a torso, arms, and head poking out
that doesn't make sense

reminder that the actors were depressed from spending 4 hours underwater a day, while Cameron was spending 12.

it's as good artistically but it's not as entertaining.

still the best alien design in a movie ever

yeah but Cameron is more fish then man
filming that movie was probably the best time of his life

>Cameron would greet new arrivals to the set saying to them "welcome to my nightmare"

Ney-ney is best

Attached: 1515515598768.png (1081x1867, 3.89M)

>yeah but Cameron is more fish then man
Ain't that the truth. Dude probably had the time of his life filming those deep sea exploration documentaries.

Attached: cameron in ocean exploring vessel.jpg (590x322, 196K)

>part of the films plot is a couple of highly motived people driven apart by their obsessions coming back together as a result of the events of the film
>but in real life the film caused a split between Cameron and his wife Gale Ann Hurd

Not being released on Blu-ray yet, along with True Lies, because Cameron is in charge of the home media releases, he's busy with Avatar sequels, and can't be fucked to do anything else

Attached: enab.jpg (569x802, 43K)

Attached: Ht8xeE.gif (320x135, 1.05M)

it's a miracle no one died filming this

10 second search and I found it.

Nothing, its an absolutely amazing film

>- Shoot was a nightmare and made everybody miserable
as it should be for underwater kino

The ending was terrible, everything else was great
Apparently Ed Harris almost did and he punched out James Cameron and vowed never to work with him again.

It's long and the setting gets repetitive. The story putters along and any action requires suiting up/submersible (most of the time). It's anti-zoomer, but great for its time.

The 80's and 90's were such a golden era for sci fi.

What other sci fi kinos with similar themes would you recommend?

Cool story faggot

What went wrong? Well first of all you stupid nigger, the movie was released like in 1991 so I don't know what the fuck do you mean by "what went wrong" since it was out there for nearly 30 years. Are you stupid or something?
Second what do you mean what went wrong, the movie was pretty good ok and it was one of the first CGI movies, you stupid loser.
And the plot was pretty good and the box office? Who the fuck cares about box office, its Jim Cameron he did a buck anyway afterwards with other movies.
You really pissed me off with your stupid question OP, consider yourself lucky I have not completely destroyed your stupid attitude more. Faggot.

The documentary about the making of this movie is better than the actual film

Yikes.

And I love the Abyss.

"Leviathan" is very close to "The Abyss". It even came out the same year. Deep water horror with a sea monster. It's been years since I saw it but I remember enjoying it, then again I love all kinds of stupid B movies that get slammed by critics.

>In 2014 the pay cable channels Cinemax and HBO began broadcasting both versions of the film in 1080p.[54][55] Netflix's UK service began offering the theatrical version in 1080p in 2017.[56] At an October, 2014 event James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd were asked about a future blu-ray release for the film. Cameron gestured to the head of Fox Home Entertainment, implying the decision lay with the studio.[57] Five months later another article suggested a spat between Cameron and 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment was responsible for the delay.[58] While promoting the upcoming 30th-anniversary Blu-ray release of Aliens at Comic-Con in San Diego July 2016 James Cameron confirmed that he was working on a remastered 4K transfer of The Abyss and that it would be released on Blu-ray for the first time in early 2017. Cameron added, "We've done a wet-gate 4K scan of the original negative, and it's going to look insanely good. We're going to do an authoring pass in the DI for Blu-ray and HDR at the same time."[59] It is unclear if this new scan is the one used to create the 1080p broadcasts.
Its getting processed
the delay is probably due to the time it is taking to render everything with a blue tint

there were a whole bunch of deep sea horror movies released around 1989 trying to cash in on The Abyss

Leviathan had a great cast but shoddy execution. You can say that both were miscast though. Micheal Biehn is good in any TG though.

Leviathans effects were provided by Stan Winston Studio too

Some party bring must cooked like crap. Remember the scene in Ed Wood, there Lugosi had to make the octopus attack him? That's how a few parts felt.

>Some party bring must cooked like crap.
What by this he mean?

Having done a bit of googling you appear to be correct
>DeepStar Six (1989)
>On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a very negative rating of 0%, based on 7 reviews, with an average rating of 2.5/10
Oh man this sounds like something I definitely HAVE to see

Attached: 1488877203077.png (576x507, 59K)

*Parts looked like crap

Sorry. I'll commit seppuku now senpai.

Nice projecting, stupid fuck. You sound like a democrat. You probably don't even know who's James Cameron.

He directed Batman 2: the desolation of Spock.

>projecting a yikes

I downloaded a 10GB file to see this.
Fuck t

The first act is basically Aliens underwater.... But yeah nah it's not as good.

Sphere
the book is better then the movie obvi

It is. I like the movie a lot, but the doc is straight up amazing. I've probably watched it more times than the movie itself.

Attached: Gaffney_2.jpg (1132x798, 115K)

I sometimes mix up a line from Casino that was actually in Goodfellas. That means they’re both bad movies :^)

I've never even heard of this movie should I watch it? sounds like kino from these post

Yes, then watch the documentary

Attached: img111.jpg (228x337, 90K)

The Abyss more like Arby's

Attached: download.jpg (249x202, 6K)

That was the only movie that gave me nightmares. Just one scene with the parents flippin through the channels as a kid. They thought it was abyss too. The decapitation part scarred me. It's probably cheesy now if I went to see it again.

How come I'm not being invited to your party user? I could've brought a fresh plate of my cooked crap. You wouldn't hold out on me would you?
