Potato animation budget but they compensated by intelligent still shots and effective pauses in conversation that really emulated cinema, a soundtrack that barely hit like 13 or so tracks, but every one of them was gold, getting rid of plot elements from the manga, but doing so still allowed the story to move organically.

I think some of the subject matter still hurts it. When you have an entire arc that has kids getting killed, both the protagonist and the love interest being raped, and torture, it spells problems. You can make the argument that Game of Thrones does that stuff too and is gobbled up by people, but there's a sort of bias I think regarding animation doing it and it being presented in live format.
