Honest this: OP how did you not understand a simple scene in a comic book movie ?

Batman's whole thing is lashing out against his feeling of powerlessness. He's overpowering others because of his childhood trauma (father/himself being incapable of saving Martha). It's his way to cope. That's why he's going this hard against Superman, because he ups the feeling of powerlessness to an unprecedented degree. When Batman towers over Superman, ready to execute, Superman tells him he'd be letting "him" kill Martha. Batman freaks out due to his deep trauma and Lois appears and puts it in context. Batman realizes both Superman's humanity and that he's been tricked, as well as having Superman put in the same situation Thomas Wayne/young Bruce was. He sees his shot at redemption, saving Martha and overcoming his trauma.
Their mothers having the same name is not the reason why he stops. Bruce hearing his mothers name triggers the memory why he became Batman in the first place & how he's pretty much become the thing that he swore to fight off. He's gone so far off the edge that he's become a monster. Killing Supes would've been the point of no return. It was his wakeup call. If he didn't yell "Why did you say that name repeatedly?" & backed down quietly I think this would've been clearer

I understand the meaning of this scene, Batman's becoming what he swore to defeat, and Superman saying Martha reminded him of the reason he does what he does, having a change of heart, but whats awful about the scene is not the message, it's the delivery, by just saying Martha is a very dumb way to resolve, Sups could have said something like "save her" or "save my mom" and the message would still be clear, and in my opinion better delivered.

Embarrassing. People in my theatre were laughing. I literally felt a wave of cringe over me. How this scene got approved is truly beyond the average person, these studio executives are so out of touch with reality.

My mom cried so hard in this scene. I get what it's going for thematically (humanizing Superman in a way Batman couldn't see before), but I feel it was handled a bit clunkily. The little bit after the fight was a bit rushed. The scene needed more of a cool down.

This scene was badly made, but that was not the worst thing in this movie. it's about the whole thing. I have been a fan of Batman and comics for 30 years and there were so many absurdities here, starting from the very idea that Batman can fight& defeat Superman, next there was terrible Lex Luthor (Eisenberg was so bad in the role), and it ends on Affleck, who for me has no charisma on screen, and his acting is simply too weak. For me, Affleck was not a good choice for Batman from the beginning. Bale has natural uniqueness and darkness in him, that's why he was so brilliant in American Psycho, and this darkness also made him an ideal Batman. I respect Affleck as producer and director much more than actor, he is much better at directing than acting.

So many people don’t understand what this scene means. The “Martha” name is just something that took Bruce out of his rage. He realized that Superman may be an alien, but he still was raised as a human and thought that until recently. He didn’t want Clark to feel like how he did when his “Martha” died and had that amazing vision scene.

My body shuddered under the burden of adrenaline and my mind was a shadow of its whole self, and yet through the very cloud of my beautiful pain I heard her name-Martha. An impossible glimpse of bright light pierced the storm of my heart and I was nothing more than a child again. I realised then, that the darkness which had taken my heart now threatened to take my very thing which crushed my younger self, a cruel fate worse than any other agony. I sought to exact the pain I suffered on a being I hardly understood, except that he had mother and her name was Martha. And it broke me.

People were PAID to WRITE this. People PAID to SEE this. I'm stunned. And no, don't tell me that Batman saw Superman as a human for the first time because he never thought of him as a person up until someone mentioned he had a mother and also conveniently needed a trigger word to be left vulnerable. First, no one refers to their mom by their first name. Second, Batman DID know Superman had parents, he mentioned them before this scene. Third, the fact that Batman goes apeshit when he hears the extremely common name of "Martha" makes this even stupider.
Samuel Roberts
The brilliance of this scene is the contrast of colors between the two distinctive characters with some green hue representing the ultimatum of their respective choices. Amidst the gloomy atmosphere, the Beast (Batman) raises his (Longinus) spear, ready to strike the miracle of hope, represented by Superman (a variation of Jesus), who pleads for humanity (represented by Batman) to save the one he loves the most (who represents Mother Mary of Nazareth). Sounds of glorious choir sung by cherubs, soothing voices echoing through Bruce's state of mind when he hears the name Martha, a name associated with the sister of Lazarus and Mary of Bethany; a reference to the many biblical concoctions to the DCEU. Forcing Bruce to revisit his most brutal childhood trauma, Batman and Superman sings their mothers' first name as if they were on a stageplay, reenacting a classic scene from a Shakespearean play. Lois, represented by Saint Mary Magdalene, comes to spare Superman's life by elaborating on the true meaning behind the Martha name, which ultimately and emotionally challenge Bruce's mental notion of.....
.... you know what? I really get the message behind this scene, and IT STILL SUCKS.

There is a difference in having a mother (who made you a spoiled brat) and caring for your mother (who taught you empathy and humbleness) to the point of valuing her life over your own, you dumb fuck.

Superman is down and helpless. Batman stands over him ready to finish him off with the Kryptonite spear. Lois Lane runs in and throws herself over Clark trying to protect him. A helpless Clark begs Batman to help him save his mother. Lois says "They have *Martha*?". Batman staggers backwards when he hears Lois say this... realising that Superman has both a mother and a woman who loves him enough to throw herself over him to save him. Flashback to Alfred's comment about the rage that turns good men cruel - and Batman finally comes to his senses. And.... there you have a non-ridiculous scene that STILL uses the infamous "Martha".

Superman yelling "Save Martha!" Isn't what prevented Batman from killing him. Batman if anything was getting angrier at that point but it did trigger memories in him of why he became the Batman in the first place. So that nobody would have to go through the trauma he went through as a child under his watch. It's when Lois says that Martha is Superman's mother's name, Batman realises that while he had his parents taken from him as a child, that he'd be taking a child from a mother. Batman realised he had lost track of everything he stood for and that's why he backed up and started listening to Superman. I realise that this is a long analysis of a 4 minute sequence but it's extremely obvious to me and I don't know how so many people aren't seeing this.

The entire point of this scene was that it was the first time Batman saw Superman as a human that cared about others. The dialogue was pretty shit but only a brainlet would think that they became best friends because their mother shared a name.
Logan Martin
>Batman:"What did you just say? Martha? Your mother is also called Martha? OMG WE NOW BEST FRIENDS FOR EVER!!!"
Why do people always say this? It's never shown that they're friends even after his death. All that happened was Batman saw him as a man and was galvanised by his death to bring the heroes of the world together to defend it in his absence.
William Hill
Batman throughout the film doesn't see Superman as a man, just an alien that has no reason to protect this world other than because he wants to. The realization that Superman has a mother, makes Batman now see him as more human, more of a man with something to fight for and protect, with the weakness that Batman has carried his whole life. Batman sees the fear of loss in Superman that he thought he could not have.
Gabriel Jackson
Snyder is shit and can't make a good movie for the life of him
