Why did so many people go to Avatar?

Because it was one of the first American blockbusters that was ok for China to attend, so they turned out in droves. America also fell for the 3D meme.

I found the movie quite generic when I watched it.

Good advertising

because at the time, while IMAX and 3D wasn't new, this was one of the first ground breaking attempts to capitalize on the technology.

Similar to what Jurassic park or Star Wars did. People want to embrace the new.

And by god it was beautiful. Plot being shit not withstanding.

The actual reason (only brainlets think it was 3D or marketing) is Word of Mouth.

It was only a technical achievement. That's it everything else was generic.

Neytiri isn't generic

James Cameron hyped it up as the culmanation of all his mastery as a director and promised the next big thing, a ground breaking experience, with technology never before seen, in actual 3D nearing VR levels.

He basically trolled everyone.

>Avatar was supposed to be the next Star Wars, with sequels every 2 years
>Avatar 2 is still "filming" 10 years later

Are they actually still working on these films or was this all a money laundering scheme? Most people who went to see it don't care anymore.

I'd like to believe that Sam Worthington has been in a blue monkey suit somewhere sweating in a studio miles deep into death valley, asking when he will be allowed to go home

Avatar's Chinese box office was almost immediately beaten by other movies, as it was one of the first western films to be allowed a wide release.

Can you believe this fool only earned $500k on a movie that made over 2b?

Literally the 3D meme, my father went to the cinema like 3 times in his life and he went to see Avatar with me and my brother because everyone was saying "it felt like you were there";

it was written so all the sci-fi elements were easy to understand, but that meant that sci-fi nerds felt condescended to and didn't give it credit for how much actual hard sci-fi is in the movie.

the ship, the superconductors floating in a magnetic field, the sizes of the creatures, the composition of the atmosphere, all was properly researched.

What do we think of Cameron's new girlpower Terminator?

Its the first Terminator since 2 he will be personally involved with, not directing, but overseeing it as writer and executive producer.

Bullshit, it was 3D + Christmas holiday release. I was in the theater.

I don't expect too much from it. Cameron writing is nice and all, but without him directing I think it'll just be another forgettable sequel.

When i saw the movie the only way i could describe it was "big" it was a movie that felt big. Just watching the intro it was clear this was a beautifully big movie. Marvel movies have big budgets but feel small. This movie made me feel like I was watching cinema. Endgame never made me feel like i was watching movie history. But Avatar, when I watched it, I knew I was watching somethign that would change the game. It's on the level of Jurassic Park where it feels a lot bigger than it is. James really knew how to capture size and scale very well and that's why this movie is perfect for me
