I saw it in the nineties, as a kid, in the west.
On a state channel. The day after I was on the school playground and we had a band of mates. I fell right in between the nerdy and the sporty ones. during recess, I had a chance to talk to the one mate who had a habit of staying up late too.Because he was home alone a lot, like a lot of us were. We both had seen the same movie! How exciting it was and even more exciting to have found a kindred spirit.
Skip forward to years later. We've kept in contact and I've bought the manga of Akira and been talking to him about it. Coaxing him into it. He was reluctant about it, because he's a big Nipponfil and fan of anime and manga and all that shit, he considered himself past that. He had a wife and a baby on the way. I lend him the six volumes of Akira (2000!) pages.
When I visited him in the delivery house, one of those volumes was lingering aroungd. He'd read them and found them to be far superior to the anime as well.
The cartoon is monumental, but the manga is monumental too. It's not exactly the bible, but with the right frame of mind and set of eyes it will always be relevant.
