Brian wasn't much of a liberal douche in the first three seasons. In the middle seasons is when writers started using him as a soapbox, and then after that writers realized what they did and turned him into a punching bag. Early on he was just incredibly sarcastic and then in season 3 he started to become more of a pretentious asshole without really being a soapbox. Most of his soapbox episodes in the early seasons were about problems only a dog would have like not being able to walk around without a leash.
