Thanos only stood a chance against him because he had 4 infinity stones. He was probably also reluctant to use the time stone since he had it hidden. He'd really probably only have trouble against other magic users like Scarlet Witch.

It depends on whether or not his cape functions in any given condition. Strange is bullshit overpowered but writers have to constantly come up with reasons that he can't solve every problem in the multiverse by waving his hands.
