In my opinion, the problem with Stannis is that he was inflexible, like iron--he just snapped rather than move on and let go of things. And Renly was way too flashy, too full of style rather than substance--not strong enough to lead. Similar to bronze. Robert Baratheon, however, had the best of both brothers and was more like steel--maybe not perfect, but strong enough and stylish enough to lead a kingdom through years of peace.

In season 2, we were introduced to the Dragonstone characters without any season 1 characters introducing us to them. Stannis, Melisandre and Davos just appear for the first time and automatically become a part of the story, and it works well.
