Even if he weren’t pretending before, that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be pretending now and he actually wanted them to defy him to pass a final test. In Swan Song, he even noted how Sam and Dean went up against demons, angels, destiny and God himself and how nothing ever truly ends. Obviously Swan Song was meant to be its own ending (and stuff like The Monster at the End of This Book referring to something else BUT Chuck) but you gotta give them props because retroactively, the old stuff can be linked to what is going on right now.
