Stargate Atlantis was good because of its warehouse costumes and sets. It had very little to work on and they just rolled with it. The only thing the show creator really had to work on was their own imaginations which is what made is a solid TV sci-fi.
The closest thing we'll ever have to early-2000s Sci-Fi channel is modern Netflix and even those shows rely too heavily on CGI.
