Perhaps you're thinking of Brienne+Pod. Early on with Arya+Hound, it's implied that they sort of work together as a team when they kill/steal, but he never trained her formally. He was actively dismissive of her as a fighter, which makes him smarter than the people who wrote him. But, he gave her insight/tips into the nature of killing. He taught her how to kill by stabbing in the heart, but most of his bullshit was philosophical.

The Hound was like a dark version Ned Stark. Ned never taught her anything about fighting and was reluctant, for the most part. He said a lot to discourage it (although he never meant her harm by it), but she still was shaped by him and learned a lot of by observing him. Sandor is an anti- father figure, down to his practiced indifference to her. Of course, if you have a 'buddy' hands-on Dad, this is lost on you.

The only problem I have with it is that it feels like they excuse their actions due to their past. Arya is an actual maniac who brutally murdered Meryn Trent and fed a man his own son in a pie and murdered dozens of his descendants. Arya is not a good person, but the show never paints it as a bad thing that this person of innocence has been corrupted to be a killing machine.

This problem also exists in Dany, but its not as bad because we actually get dialogue from other characters commenting on her brutality and it looks like we may be getting final boss Dany.

Sansa is the one I don't really mind much, I think her being a bitch is the natural conclusion of her character, but they flubbed up the part where she actually learns how to play the game.
