Well there were only 3-4 characters to focus on so it was pretty easy to do so to begin with.
As for time travel being used appropriately, the Black Arc kinda fudges things up abit with how the hakai magic of Beerus doesn't take effect one of the Zamasus from other timelines (or was it because he was wearing a time ring? I forget).
That being said, I greatly enjoyed Goku Black and Zamasu as antagonists and they do end up achieving their goal in the end unlike Thanos so it's definitely superior storytelling on that end.

Future Trunks goes back, and his presence changes how Bulma and Vegeta concieve.
If conception is even a few seconds off, it couldn’t be the same Trunks. In this case it wasn’t seconds but HOURS/DAYS since Vegeta now decides to train harder therefore changing the conception time.
New Trunks is Trunk’s brother, same parents different gene expression. Different hair color, shorter, edgier.
