They come equipped with simple, yet powerful moral statements, and and unpretentious yet emotional scenes based around character, rather than all fanciful effects and humor (though they have those). The postmodern deconstruction (in the strictly literary sense), especially incorporating concepts antithematic to the original story, like parallel universes, is a really hackneyed way to make capeshit. It requires too much ancillary knowledge, and hinders it from telling a good story, in the sense it reflects the human condition.
