i think this is the case with so much stuff on the show. i think they were planning on following stannis' storyline more closely aligned with what GRRM told them, hence all the Other scenes with Stannis, and then just doing a complete 180 and just smashing him against Ramsay out of fucking nowhere with 20 good men.
