Personally, I wish they would have worked something out and found a way to keep Howard in the role. I like Cheadle in a lot of things, but I don't think he fit Rhodey, or the MCU, at all. I think Howard did more with the character in the limited capacity that he had in Iron Man 1 than Rhodey managed to accomplish in several sequels where he fully got the chance to be War Machine.

Cheadle was just a bad fit.

Cheadle has some good moments, like the tank story in Age of Ultron

I love IM1 because it was made pre-MCU formula so it's kinda in between early 00's cape movies and what we got now that are more products than anything

before IronMan and Sherlock, RDJ was never that big. Terrance was a much bigger name at the time. He's even the one that convinced them to give RDJ the job

I was amazed to find out Iron Man 1 didn't have a shooting script. Before each day of filming, Downey, Favreau and Jeff Bridges would go into a trailer and just riff, and whatever they came up with ended up in the movie.

Shit like that usually ends in disaster, I legitimately wonder what went right
