North Vietnam already had independence, the United States never threatened to conquer them and was in fact prohibited by treaty from entering North Vietnam. They could have had their independence and peace any time they wanted as the US was fighting to stop them from invading the South not to subjugate their government.

The North Vietnamese were fighting to conquer South Vietnam in the name of unifying their people under communism. Exactly the same rhetoric used by Kim Il Sung during his attempted conquest of South Korea.
