In retrospect, the Iron City Experience was a weird and out-of-place part of the movie's marketing, wasn't it

it'd be nice subtle gym-wear at least. Don't make them your everyday shoes if you're worried about them and don't crouch and stand on the balls of your feet so they don't bend. I've made quite a few pairs of shoes last for several years this way and other than the inside you can barely tell how much they've been used. It takes very little effort to maintain it honestly.

There's a variety of reasons, for me it's mainly because it's a great adaptation of a manga I started reading when I was a teenager. Seeing it come alive on the big screen was somewhat magical, and unlike most other adaptations it was respectful of the source material and expanded it into something great.

Knowing Cameron though, he goes for more the on the nose, or there is a clear good and bad guy... okay kind of. Alita is a mix in terms of the writing and morality. That and thanks to Kishiro's writing, it's not an original piece by Cameron. Every character in Alita is flawed, some fatally. There are obvious bad guys, but every person regardless has done bad things. Hugo is basically a villain from a certain point of view. It's always nice when a film can admit that people are flawed, sometimes to an unhealthy degree. Cameron did it back with Sarah Connor, she tried to blow up a computer factory and got committed. John Connor took after her teachings and stole, disobeyed his foster parents, etc. I can see why he loved Battle Angel, a lot of his early writing is similar. If only Titanic and Avatar, dealt heavier with these clashes of morality. There are glimpses of it, and I think the golf guy in Avatar did nothing wrong, but it's still basic bad vs. good. Alita was like Cameron's early work.

Nova told Ido that what started him down the road of doing monstrous experiments on people was learning the secret of Zalem, and that once Ido knew he would happily serve Nova.

That isn't what happened; the knowledge was so traumatizing Ido chose to erase his memory because he couldn't live with it. Nova was able to live with the knowledge, but how did that change him?

Perhaps Nova concluded that having gone through the Zalemite initiation, he was no longer a real person and that nothing he perceived was real either, since those sensations weren't registered by a real brain. So there could be no right or wrong in anything he did, and he resolved to alter people to whatever extent was necessary in find the root causes of human action and reaction.

Nova's dream world, the inverted reflection of the real world, is a place where he is human and relates to others in a human way. He wears his mask to separate himself from humanity, so this is the only place where he can take it off.

Alita knows she must kill him but accepts the tragedy of this just as she accepted that Zapan and Makaku had good sides to them.

Tl;dr the Alita/Nova confrontation is a masterpiece.

Beautifully worded, but I hope audiences not familiar with the manga will be able to go in to the confrontation, and not get mad from being subverted from what they may be expecting. The way the end of Alita sets it up is the standard she'll go get him, almost like Kill Bill, but that's obviously not what it turns out to be. It could be they just straight up write a new origin for Nova, they made him so important in the script. With Norton penning the script alongside Cameron and Rodriguez... how amazing will the version be in the film sequel?
