What exactly happened here? Superman turned back time, but there's every indication that he still didn't stop the second missile (so now California has a nice irradiated chunk) why is Lois suddenly safe when her car breaks down that time? It's an otherwise near perfect film
What exactly happened here? Superman turned back time...

Superman reversed the rotation of the planet to reverse time itself and didn't hurl everyone and everything into space while destroying the planet itself. A missile isn't the main problem with that scene.
Well it was the Silver Age, that kind of thing happened.
I always just thought superman was flying so fast he went back in time.
He doesn't reverse the rotation brainlet. The Earth rotating the other way is a visual way of showing that he's going back in time
He literally stops, and goes back the other way to reset the rotation at the end of it.
Well missiles conveniently not doing anything is another thing that happens in the silver age.
Come on user, if you actually watch the scene you see the Earth stop and rotate the other way along with him.
It's symbolic visual shorthand, you dinks.
I actually have no idea how or when I watched this movie by I do remember this for some reason.
Now explain GREAT WALL OF CHINA REPAIR RAY from Superman 3.
I actually wonder if originally it was supposed to be him simply passing the time-barrier as was a regular occurrence in the comics, but they found test audiences didn't understand what the fuck was going on so added some visuals to show that he was reversing the rotation of the Earth itself, which they figured would evoke the same kind of Silver Age nonsense.
What about the Superman in the past anyway? Shouldn't there be two? Then one should no longer exist because he had no reason to go back in time because Lois is saved.
a wizard did it
He didn't time travel, he rewound the Earth. Everything on the Earth just moved backwards, but he didn't because he wasn't on the Earth.
No, it doesn't make any sense, and it isn't really supposed to.
He's traveling faster than light, which is a thing he can apparently do. If you can travel faster than light then assuming the universe doesn't collapse in on you the normal laws of physics do not apply.
The implication - which any nerd in 1978 would recognize since it was an old Star Trek plot - is that by going sufficiently FTL he can travel back in time. The reversing of the planet is simply time in reverse; if it were physically going backward, and I almost can't believe I'm having to point this out, then Lois would still be dead at the end of the scene, just on a planet turning the other way.
Superman is actually quite good at dealing with theoretical physics - it even gets inertial frame of references from special relativity correct in Space Dad's voiceover at the start - but of course if you've watched the entire movie then magic space guy traveling back in time to save his not-girlfriend from dying is easy to accept. The fucking clouds are talking to him, for shit's sake.
He doesn't just reverse time, he takes himself back to a point at which the him of the past is racing to stop one missile. Two Supersman can easily stop both missiles and save Lois. There's no indication that he doesn't stop both missiles in the do-over - the earthquake doesn't happen, Lois is just out of gas. Then he goes back to the future to replace the Superman who went back in the past.
It's still a temporal paradox, but... the guy can fly. Deal with it.
No, no, explain "traveled to the ruins of Krypton and back but the kid he fathered with Lois was still only 5 and Lois was only 22" from Superman Returns.
I think that was 4.
He didn't "Turn back time", he flew back in time and so, from his point of view, it seemed the Earth was spinning backwards. He overlapped his own timeline, so for a little while there were TWO Supermen!
Why doesn't superman just go and fucking travel to krypton and turn back time over there and save his planet?
In the comic, he rebuilt it by hand!
1) He doesn't have powers in Krypton's solar system.
2) How can he save Krypton? How can he stop it from exploding? In fact, didn't the fucking SUN go nova in the movie?
What he should do is go back in time and then use his power to build a fleet of space ships, and then fly to Krypton to evacuate everybody to some system with a yellow sun. Or, hell, a red sun if they prefer.
I made a fan edit just so I could cut this bullshit scene out.
Watch the scene, once rewinded long enough he star spinning the other way so the earth can move forward in time like normal. If he just traveled back in time by going fast he wouldn't need to spin the earth back to normal at the end.
