>I’m so honored to have spent the last eight years creating and running Steven Universe with my spectacular team. For years I felt as if we were holding our breath, hoping to finish the story we set out to tell, trying to keep our balance while the tectonic plates of the television landscape shifted under our feet. As difficult as it was to tell an honest, personal story through a mainstream animated series, it was even more difficult to create a serialized narrative where the characters experienced growth and change: there was no framework for a show like this at Cartoon Network when we began in the early ‘10s. But these were the aspects of the show we were most passionate about: we wanted to share the arcs of these characters, and our growth as artists and people, and the outpouring of support we received from fans ultimately made our dreams come true. Almost a decade later, there is no question that the passion and enthusiasm of Steven Universe fans made our show possible, and for that I am so humbled and grateful.
>When I began the show, I felt very alone, unsure if anyone would relate to the personal aspects of Steven Universe. It has been an eye-opening experience to meet the community that has come together around the show: I have been so moved, and I have felt so seen. I have always been a believer in the power of cartoons, and these days it’s undeniable: the friendship forged over this show, the artists moved to draw, the families that watched together and saw each other in these characters, inspire so much awe in me, and renew my love of animation every day. Though our epilogue series Steven Universe Future is coming to a close, please trust that like us, these characters will always be growing, changing, and supporting each other.

It's great to hear that it's been such a transformative experience for you, Rebecca. You put your art out there in a way that resonated with a large number of people and that's a hell of a lot more than I can say for anything I've ever done. Good on you for that. Seriously.
Regardless, I cannot help but look back on your show as one that promised great things, but consistently failed to deliver. Even thoughts of its high points are tinged with disappointment in what it eventually became. It is my hope that in the future, we'll be able to chalk this up to a combination of directorial inexperience and the network ruthlessly fucking over your airing schedule. I would love to see you learn and grow from this in such a way that your next project soars to the heights that SU could never reach.
