Martin has left the middle point between ADWD and TWOW to be so ambiguous that pretty much anything could happen. In ADWD characters such as Stannis, Davos, Loras Tyrell, Jon Snow and more are said to be dead, but there is just as much evidence to show they are alive. Stannis appears in the Winds of Winter preview chapters but we don't know when that chapter takes place in relation to Jon's last chapter where he reads that Stannis is dead.

Barristan's death was enraging to me. He goes on to be a key part of the later chapters in ADWD, even taking over rule of Meerwen after he imprisons Hizdahr. And we never got to see that or see him return to Westeros with Dany. It's all Dabid's fault.

But Ramsay does get legitimized in the 3rd book by royal decree. And betrothed to that fake Arya, so that House Bolton can claim the North as their reward for their services to the Lannisters. Roose is a complete psychopath of course who only cares for his own power, but he does take Ramsay under his wing since he's the only heir he has at hand.

Unless George wants to loose half his fanbase and loose his honour and recognition as a writer, he will make a coalition of Stannis, Jon and Mance.

Stannis already talked to Jon, influenced him and offered him to join him as Jon Stark of Winterfell.
He closely listened to Jon, did things such as attack the mountain clans, go for Winterfell instead of the Dreadford and dismissed several of his trusted advisors and knights because Jon adviced it.

Stannis knows that Jon is like his lord father, honourable and stubborn, he knows the North very well, otherwise Stannis would have never listened to him.
George will not set up Stannis Northern alliance and campaign all the way, so Stannis dies in the cold, because of listening to Jon, Stannis isn't Napoleon and Winterfell isn't Moscow.

Jon ultimately will go south of the wall, to reclaim his home, especially when he gets resurrected by Melisandre, which of course woud make it even more plausible to follow Stannis, though Melisandre might play her own game at that.

Stannis knows that he will need more forces to subject and hold the North, liberating Mance Rayder would make it easier to get the wildlings to follow Stannis.
Ramsay killing Mance might happen as well and it would only insert more fury into those of the wildlings who would want to avenge their king. Tormund and Jon would negotiate an alliance of purpose and Stannis would promise to make them citizens of the realm and give them land to settle on, something that only a Westerosi king could do.
And Stannis needs a Stark-supporter, Jon is his chance.

Of course there is Littlefinger who will want to get Sansa back North, but won't be able to unless the crannogmen allow it, Lady Stoneheart and the Blackfish possibly teaming up, Davos bringing in Manderly and Rickon, many houses who want to betray Roose, including the Karstarks.
Howland Reed might reveal Robb's last will and later Jon's parentage to change everything.
