Jenn was perfect for the role. She portrayed somone who's been so hurt emotionally she's locked herself away behind an icy facade.

My headcanon about the original wheelchair-bound Alita is that Ido and Chiren didn't -have- to leave Zalem, only Alita was required to leave because she was disabled. But if Ido and Chiren stayed, Alita would have been sent down into Iron City alone as a crippled toddler, not exactly good survival odds.

Ido and Chiren went down voluntarily, but Chiren had regrets as soon as she reached the ground. She told herself she'd tough it out for Alita, then when Alita was killed she fell into utter despair, concluding that her daughter would have been doomed on the ground regardless of whether she and Ido had left.

You can sense the despair coming through in every scene with her. She never appears to be enjoying herself, even when she's lounging in lingerie. After falling to the surface and losing Alita, she probably figures her life is over and she might as well be dead anyway, which makes it easier to sleep with Vector and build killer cyborgs. When she saw Alita with Hugo she felt something she hadn't felt in a long time and realized that there are things worth protecting even on the surface.

While I understand that Hugo doesn't have the same depth of backstory as Yugo in the source material, I didn't feel like there was anything missing in his motivation to go to Zalem. He's a young man without deep attachments in Iron City - of course he's going to be dreaming about going to a place which appears to offer riches, opportunity and comfort. The realism in that is shown by the migration crisis, which also shows how the people who dream of greener pastures get taken advantage of by people like Vector.

gotta say when you compare Alita to the recent slew of adaptations and new properties it's head and shoulders above the rest. to me the list is essentially:

valerian, jupiter ascending, GitS, BR2049, Alita, and the upcoming Dune film

of those Alita thus far is the best, and though i reckon i'll like dune i think it will be to difficult to adapt to its fullest

Dune is likely to be at least as good as the original, simply because the overall look of the original was so ugly. If they make the new Dune more aesthetic, which shouldn't be difficult, then the actors could be slightly off the mark and the movie could still be decent.

That scene where she see Hugo and Alita, Alita's love and selflessness, it reminds her of that feeling she had long since lost, it's the moment she wipes Alita's tear, in the same fashion as Ido, she has become healed, and confronting Vector is her final redemption and acceptance of her fate.

There's plenty of analysis here it's just spread between threads. Speaking of, time for some COLOUR theory. Vector and Chiren both ONLY wear dark coloured clothing when appearing in public, as a contrast to most of Alita's bright clothes and her innocence. It's only after Chiren's redemption that she changes to a black and white combination, showing the conflicting but settled parts of her soul. Moreover, all of the morally grey characters wear darker clothing generally when doing actions which are unclear (think Ido when hunting in that outfit, and Hugo's constant blacks and greys.) Which brings us to the finale of Alita in her black catsuit. Here she's seeking vengeance and violent retribution which, while understandable is a sign that she has developed beyond her childish and innocent initial waking process. She's become part of the world of Iron City, with all of its faults and flaws.

If when they make a sequel, they'll make 2&3 at once. This will allow them to tell a bigger story, while making the second first and seeing how it does would require it to have a satisfying ending and work 100% on its own, which could be limiting compared to what they want to do.

I brought up how Alita's clothing changes throughout the film, depending on a stage in her life, from youthful innocence, to rebellious teenager, to more seductive or womanly clothing, to more vengeful colors, there's a very clear progression. Another user brought up how Hugo's clothes almost never change, and an interest theory his clothes are also ragged, likely he doesn't spend any credits to get new clothes because he's saving every credit to get to Zalem.

By it I mean the accelerated ending Kishiro made to appease fans after the first part ended with Nova blasting Alita into pieces, in that ending, Melchizedek goes insane and tries to destroy the orbital elevator, but Alita prevents the disaster by turning it into a plant, it's basically a feel good ending where none of Last Order happens, Lou wakes up just fine, and Alita no longer cares about going to Mars. It's just an accelerated ending, since I can understand most readers were pissed at the first part ending the way it did without any word about a continuation for several years.

Yesterday an organic man told me he admired my hands. It took only a few seconds but this brief interaction crystallized the structural oppression that People of Machinery (PoM) face in every facet of our lives. An organic may ask what's wrong with that, why not be happy that people praise our cybernetic bodies, but this only perpetuates the systematic devaluation of PoM reinforced by the unexamined organic privilege. If this young man had taken a moment to interrogate the thought process that led to him "just admiring my hands," might he have desisted from this statement? Might he have reflected on the history of instrumentalization - the history of objectification, of colonization of the mechanical by the organic? Organic social structures have long charted the mechanical and the cybernetic as a colonizing force. Machines are described in manuals, blueprints, schematics, organic engineers creating these documents with the same zeal of 15th century cartographers, whose drawn interpretations of Earth's geography opened the door to untold suffering by indigenous peoples. Every cybernetic body existed in the imagination before it existed in reality, and PoM are thus the indigenous people of the human noosphere, dwellers on the frontier of human imagination. But through institutionalized prejudice, outright violence and a withering storm of microggressions, microaggressions running the gamut from the awkward remark to the grope to the simple wide-eyed downward glance that PoM know every bit as intimately as their optimum lubrication schedule, we continue to suffer. "I was just admiring your hands." Organics don't "just" admire, they gape, they gawk, they exploit, they destroy, they deny maintenance, they grind into scrap and melt down. The unexamined words of an organic are never "just," the presence of organic bodies encircling and limiting cybernetic bodies is injustice made manifest to the greatest degree of physical immediacy.

I'm going to address a painful subject for People of Machinery (PoM), so I would appreciate if any organics reading would close the article now.

Ok, for you PoMs, I hope that you're in a comfortable place and that you have resources available for self-care after reading this, because I'm going to discuss the H-word. "H*rdbody." This hate word springs without warning from the mouths of organics, a stinging reminder of the unexamined privilege that they enjoy every day of their lives. For PoMs, the H-word stuns us, bruises us, sends shivers through our bodies like a backfire, makes every actuator and servo tense up like a surge of oppressive power. A "hard body" does not feel pain or alienation. It's a body that can be used and abused in any way an organic sees fit. By repeating this word, organics reduce us to nothing more than a wrench of screwdriver, tools for organic-bodied people to exploit until they break down.

PoMs are defined by the traumas etched into our not-so-hard bodies, the scratches, abrasions and corrosion that eat through our bodies and attack our very souls even as organics deny us our vulnerability, our humanity as they spit those two vicious syllables into our faces. "H*rdbody." Every time this word falls across my ears like a lash I am reminded that I have a not-so-hard body, that my body was built to know pain in a way that no organic can imagine in the same way that no colonizer can understand the depth and richness of the cultures destroyed by colonialism.

And lastly, because it can never be said enough: fuck organic people.

The doll body still has a ton of detail, the details of the plates look so real, like on the fingers and knuckles. The berserker is great too but the doll body is one of the best movie mechanical designs I've ever seen.

How the fuck is this level of detail possible?

Absolutely intentional. I felt like it fit the era and atmosphere, plus purple is her favorite color according to the manga. I picked the yellow highlights to match her motorball body. I might go back and do a more toned down version later on just to see how it looks.
