Realistically just adapt Metal Gear 1. It has none of the series' signature pretensions and was relatively untouched by retroactive continuity until MGSV. I know MGS1 is the iconic one but if they want to delay Raiden they could make MGS1 then just expand on Grey Fox/Snake with a prequel set in MG1 then just go from there.

The correct choice would be to adapt Metal Gear 2 for the MSX. It would connect MGS 3 and V with MGS. Detailing the destruction of VenomSnake/Big Boss and retconning one of the most obscure titles.
Also, Snake having to kill his own father in Zanzibarland would be kino.
It's either that or an intersequel between 2 and 4.

They are a pastiche of Rambo, Commando, Terminator and Predator: a badass operator fighting a thread bigger than he is, with twists and turns along the way. It reeks of 80's action cliches, and its a wonderful smell.

I don't see why that would be the case because Disney owns marvel. Sony doesn't own konami. Konami would have had to sell the rights to sony to make the film. There's a transaction. It shouldn't mean that they own the ip. This isnt a harmony gold situation where Konami is eternally fucked. Happens with books, other mediums, etc...whatever the contract says doesn't change who the owner of the ip is.

I don't know if kojimas alleged themes are worth preserving and if they were I don't know if theyre appropriate for a Hollywood picture.

Jordan made some comment a while ago about the vision of the franchise belonging to one person for so long as if that were a bad thing. He says he wants to do right by the franchise but if Jackson said the obstacle of Tolkien was that it was written by one person people would have gasped in shock. Many great adaptations have been made by abandoning the source material but I don't know if that would be such a great idea.
