This could be the make or break moment for Avatar’s legacy.

For close to 20 years Avatar has been held up as the pinnacle of modern serialized kids animation, and every attempt to replicate its success has been an embarrassing mess. Even Legend of Korra, the sequel series, has proven to not hold up in the long run. Aside from the last minute romance no one ever seems to talk about it as anything that impressive, and it seems to coast purely off it’s relationship to TLA.

For years the M.Night film was considered the real black mark on the title, because supposedly the people behind it didn’t understand the material. But now with this Netflix adaptation literally helmed by the original creators, the theory that it was a fluke will really be put to the test. If this show is anything less than perfect, if it deviates too heavily or tries to re-write characters for the sake of fandom, it will be considered a failure. It will finally tip the balance to there being more shitty Avatar media than good.

Avatar will be seen less as a work of genius and more of a lucky accident.

Apparently they originally were gonna have a white Zuko, but they lost the actor, so the new guy forced them to make all the Firebenders Indian. Honestly it would’ve been easier to just make all the nations multi racial.

Zuko is an ideal boyfriend to the complaining set because his arc is all about him recognizing and atoning for his actions.

You need sets that are elaborate, both indoor and outdoor settings, for a globe-spanning story.

A huge variety of special effects needed for the bending, all of which will need to be interacted with by the cast/stuntmen.
And then there's the costuming.
To do a single episode right you'd need a budget comparable to Black Panther.

Game of Thrones was the most expensive TV show per episode of all time and it had to cut shit out because it didn’t have the money, and GoT was pretty light on the fantastical elements compared to ATLA.
With bending, Appa and Momo being in every episode alone, you’re looking at millions per episode. Not to mention FN ships, aircraft and tanks, every single animal being a weird hybrid, new locations every single episode (Omashu, the Hanging Air Temple & the Spirit World will be particularly expensive) and you’re looking at the something that blows GoT’s budget out the water.
This is going to have to be the most expensive TV show of all time to even come close to properly adapting the lriginal.

There's a reason why some series are animated. This show heavily benefited from that fact alone.

The series wasn't a failure but by the time she dies the world will be in or even slightly past our modern times depending on how long she lives. A lot of the magic of the setting would be lost (on top of LOK already stripping away a lot of the mystery of how the world functions), and I think a lot of fans wouldn't enjoy them incorporating things from our world into theirs, like social media and modern technology. Not to mention the issues, Avatar has always been pro-environment and if the next one has to deal with CEOs polluting people will throw temper tantrums because it's too political for them.

If you think it's possible for it to be good, you're delusional beyond all belief. No other show ever discussed for live action has ever needed the budget that this would REQUIRE to reproduce the shit in the original, AND it needs child actors, AND those child actors need to be specific races.

This cannot be done without spending several Disney movies' worth of money AND getting damn lucky with the casting call.

Most adults still dismiss all animation out of hand as kiddie shit and the only way to get a broader audience to think something is worth their time is to make it live action, even if it's functionally identical to the animated version. Korra was hastily moved online in the middle of the season because the dumbasses at Nick freaked out after the first half of season 3 leaked early, so they pushed the airdate from "sometime this fall" to "literally a week from now" with barely an announcement. People didn't even know it was airing for a while and unsurprisingly the ratings dipped heavily compared to season two's, and so they just decided not to give it time on air.
