What look were the costume designers going for?

It atualy makes more sense than most helmets in the show, the format would make glancing blows slide off and miss the neck/shoulders. Tywin really knew his stuff, it seems.

There is one type of leather armour, boiled leather, which actually saw military use. Aside from use in sword scabbards, it also saw a lot of use as cheap armour, although it is generally shit and only offered "better than absolutely nothing" defense, so it was almost always reinforced with strips of metal so if someone hacked at you with a sword it might not cut right through you.

The modern usage of "leather armour" that you see in games and movies is complete fucking bullshit, though. The stuff you see in GOT isn't defending against anything.

I guess it is more due to logistics and reacting to the freefolk tactics. Plate armor protects you well but is really heavy. Ther missions where more in the scouting style rather than formation fighting against enemies.

Walk into the theory with the mindset that with minimal work and additions you can use the idea to end the show without being cliche or making shit up out of nowhere.
