Bare broad strokes of the characters were used, with little consideration for how they interacted in the stories, and NO sign whatsoever of any of the memorable comic stories they've been in beyond origin stories. Odd details that happen to be on the wiki pages ("Black Canary was a singer in one reboot [it didn't last]") were included, with no consideration for how big a part of the character's overall history they were. Multiple characters were "in name only" versions of themselves.

It's certainly possible that someone doing the scripts read characters with these stories, but you could have literally come up with the same script using wiki as your only guidelines.

Cass's actual origin is cringy because she's a submissive mute asian girl, and they went way too far trying to get her away from that awkwardness and lost what makes her character appealing in the first place.

Fix it and avoid the cringy parts of her origin like so: David Cain taught her spycraft. BoP Cass is obnoxious because she's imitating what she thinks a normal kid involved in crimes would act like - She's just kind of autistic instead of being totally mute. Black Mask hired Cain for a hit and he sent her to do her first kill, but couldn't go through with it. She saw a kindred spirit in Harley, someone who had done horrible things at the behest of a supervillain loved one and was trying to go straight. The diamond thing was her attempt to create a cover story for her cover story, explaining why Black Mask would be after her.

Margot wanted this Girl Power cape movie, but couldnt have like actual co stars. So instead of Harley, Cat Woman, and Ivy doing an anti hero/villain adventure being pursued by Huntress, Bat Girl, and Black Canary. Plus an actual villain to serve as big bad for the two girl groups. We got Margot the Suicide Pin Up Reject as the focal point for a bunch of half assed characters coming together to eventually side with harley against a club owning gangster.

The marketing was sub-woke, user. There were articles on sites, but none of the people making the movie or actually advertising were doing any of that. Now that it's firmly in flop territory, people are trying to rewrite history and say it "went woke" so they can show that "go woke go broke" is true.

What's sad is that Hollywood and a lot of clueless writers with agendas, never really understood what most people found fascinating about Harley Quinn as a character. She was a true Arkham inmate who, like most of Batman's rogue's gallery, was mentally ill and driven by obsession. Yes, you could write stories about Two-Face quitting use of his coin, Riddler not leaving clues, or Mad Hatter avoiding young blondes named Alice, but what will leave an impact on the reader is them slowly but surely falling back into their madness. Harley was tragic due to being likable and somewhat "chaotic neutral", but caught in the same cycle. She's not Deadpool with no powers and she's not a symbol of empowerment. She's caught in the endless waltz which this episode's ending perfectly encapsulates.

Black Canary wasn't a trainwreck, but honestly, they made shit way more complicated than it needed to be to the detriment of the movie. Her mom was a crimefighter, she's a crimefighter that was raised by crimefighters. Don't need that fucking "I'm jaded against heroism because where were heroes when my mom was dying?" bullshit. Not with Black fucking Canary.
Montoya/Question sorta resembled her comic book self, but it was a movie that just didn't play to her strengths. She was great in the procedural-but-with-supervillains Gotham Central, and she was solid in the two-fisted-pulpy Question stuff. In this, she was just there, not being horrendously bad but still getting a massive disservice by the plot and being fifth fiddle to Harley.
Cain was a trainwreck, and Harley only vaguely resembled the character, with the writer/director deciding to emphasize the shit that was less popular in the character's history.
Zsasz was Zsasz in name only.
Black Mask was shit, but to be fair, so is the character in the books, so no harm no foul.

I'll give WB credit, a film starring a primarily female cast has underperformed at the box office and I have yet to see any kind of news company blame "The sexist, mysoginistic, Trump-supporters!"

It's a superhero film. All superhero films are expected to smash the box office right now. It's primarily the reason that i hoped it failed.

Superhero films need to stop being given a free pass because they are based on popular IP's (Or in Captain Marvel's case, because she has a vagina) They need to stand and fall on their own merits and BoP fell on its own merits. Also, because the trailer didn't look that good and the average movie-goer only knows her as "That meme-girl from that terrible film and all of those fat nerd's shirts."

The problem with that argument is that 90% of black characters in comics were brought about due to the popularity of Blacksploitation in the 70's. Most black characters race plays into their character, because it was a popular thing to do back then. They didn't need white character's races to play into their backstory, because most of their viewership was white.

So, most black characters only have the fact that they are black, play into their backstory for racist reasons.
