the sudden Shockwave/pressure change completely fucks you up, every pressure sensitive organ is destroyed, starting with your ear drums and lungs, the pressure wave travels through everything else, internal organs are hit like a truck just hit you at speed, almost liquefying everything from your brain to your gut.

you can get shot in the chest and be fine. small caliber rounds wouldn't really phase you for a while if you were already in shock, until you started coughing, which might not happen for a while.
And you can also be shot and not get a pneumothorax injury. grazings happen, and bones are very tough. I know a guy who accidentally shot himself with a .22lr pistol (from his hip area up towards his face) and the bullet broke 3 ribs but stopped in the last one.
Also your eyes being open when you die is kinda a myth. if you lose half of your body or have a serious brain injury, sure, but almost always people fall unconcious before they die and their eyes close.
I did have a guy have an aneursym and collapse with his eyes open on my first aid job, after 2 mins of CPR and a shock from an AED he was beginning to recover and he got enough oxygen to his brain that he was even starting to gain motor function, and was occaisionally looking around. When the EMT's got there and transfered him into the vehicle he breifly lost conciousness again and his eyes closed.
He ended up fine, despite not having oxygen for almost 6 mins.
