yeah i was so confused when he started shooting at his partners in crime. i mean if he would have ran or maybe helped them kill the cops than he wouldn't even be in jail. then they just awkwardly explain that he did it because he is a patriot and they were shooting at first responders. also we are supposed to admire him for selling drugs to feed his family but hate the beaners for doing literally the same thing. not to mention something about the whole movie just felt...off.

zahler is one of the only people who knows how to make modern exploitation movies. everyone else does it in such a way that there's too many winks and nods. it's also refreshing to see characters that are sort of racist and prejudiced without any sort of judgement (do people really expect cops and criminals to talk like some npr host?). this seems to be what bothers a lot of critics who seem to interpret it as an endorsement, but i find it strange. have these people never seen the french connection? or like any scorsese or tarantino movie? these people have such weirdly conservative ideas about art.

Dragged across conctrete was good and also had that great special atmosphere, tho completely different genre

Brawl in Cell block 99 was not really good and it lacked atmosphere, this normal gangster guy is supposed to be like a world champion boxer and smart enough to outsmart all of the narcos, while in prison all alone? didnt seem "realistic" and vince vaughns acting did by far not manage to convince me

It's a decent crossroad of prison drama and grindhouse. It gave characters, both Vince and villains, good moral grounds and backstory for the second act of the movie. Both parts hold on their own but I guess if you're heavily leaning towards either grindhouse or classic thrillers the other half would seem off-putting to you.
