Idk if their identity matters as much as people say it does but there is a really long and direct zoom in on them during the scene, they get a lot more focus than anyone else in the scene, other than the leader and the woman of course.

Kubrick showed these characters for a reason, he wanted the audience to question who they were. The only real concrete evidence is in the mans eyes and that's not much to go on so I imagine Kubrick has hidden who they are in the masks themselves. One shows a man and the other a woman. The man wears the Tricorn hat. The hat has marine/naval origins. The woman is crying. There are a few things this could be: A) Representations of his guilty crying wife with the naval officer. B) The shopkeeper and his daughter who is crying about it (unlikely since even though it is immoral, the daughter herself seems hyped to hook up with dudes) C) It's Marion Nathanson, who was crying to the doctor, and her husband. D) It could be the Zieglers. The Zieglers obviously saw him at the party, so this is likely also. But Kubrick really wanted us to question this. He wouldn't have shown them like this if her didn't and the masks obviously are the only clue he provides.

I think that's what you're initially supposed to think but that's only because the camera highlighted them and then later you hear that the Zielger guy was at the party. But there is a lot of symbolism pointing to Zielger being red cloak. He is playing on a red pool table and bangs the balls on the table twice, Zielger also points at Alice and the main character a lot which is something the red cloak guy does. Also the newspaper clipping refers to the actual actor irl who played red cloak saying they had a relationship together or something. The only thing off is that he has a different accent. I'm pretty sure that, if I had to bet, it's Marion Nathanson and that guy looking back at Cruz character as a weird reflection of the naval officer and his wife.

Yeah, Leon Vitali is a real person IRL who worked with Kubrick and literally was the actor who played red cloak IRL. So if the character was having an affair with the fashion designer who is in truth a real person IRL who played red cloak and the only person we see her having the fling with is Ziegler it seems to, in some weird meta way, point to the Ziegler guy.

It's not that they are someone Tom Cruise's character knows. It's that they COULD be. You're supposed to ask the question, it's the reason for treatment in but you're not supposed to come up with a satisfactory answer. Ambiguity gives an audience a feeling of uneasiness. Kubrick may be overrated but he's a little more nuanced than Scooby-Doo.
