Was it a smart move for Disney to purge the EU and establish a new canon?
Was it a smart move for Disney to purge the EU and establish a new canon?
Yeah I'm glad Disney threw out the old EU to get rid of all that dumb stuff like even bigger star destroyers, more powerful superweapons, and overpowered mary sue characters.
No, because the new canon is shit
THIS
EU was telling better stories that Kennedy's Onions Wars.
Yes, the old eu was fanfic tier for 14 yo. There really wasn't much there to salvage.
The EU was never canon though
Lucas said this way before the sale
They should have just said it was an alternate universe. That way you can have your cake and eat it too.
Yeah, ti was teh best thing to do when making a new series of movies so they don't have to bend over backwards to adhere to 20 years of convoluted EU stuff.
Unfortunately their new movies suck dick
Guys, it's been years now but I still don't know how did Disney purge EU, did they just post a disclaimer that the EU isn't canon anymore, or did they dundamentaly change something in the story of the new trilogy which rwtkons all the eu?
This. I really don't get why they don't let anyone create more Old EU material. Normalfags are smart enough to tell the difference between two different continuities.
For fucks sake Dragonball GT still gets material made for it and nobody fucking likes that shit.
>fanbase has been going strong for 40+ years
>corporate faggot steps in, tells fans their favorite stories never happened and their favorite characters never existed and will never see the big screen
>proceeds to give fans a shot for shot remake of ep.4. calls fans sexist if they dont like it
the rest is history
Disney killed the future of the series when they axed the Old EU and took strict control over the creative processes for the Nu-EU.
The prequels may have been bad movies but the Old EU stuff during that time was pure Star Wars ludo: KotOR1/2, Gennedy Wars, TCW, RC, Jedi Outcast/Knight, etc. so even if the fans didn't like the movies they could always play a game, watch a show, or read a book/comic if they wanted good new Star Wars material.
The sequels are trash and unfortunately for fans they can't look elsewhere to get their star wars fix because almost everything else sucks just as hard as the sequels do: Rebels, Resistance, EAfront 1/2, etc. And the fans are tired of it, clearly shown by Solo bombing.
TL;DR: it was a huge mistake.
The original EU was never truly canon but it had some fun content and the bad stuff one could just ignore as what-if type stuff. But now everything needs to be canon under the Disney regime and most of it is trash.
No. They should've retconned individually and kept to the good stuff (fucking Legacy).
i thought george wanted everything lucasfilm/arts did to be canon?
I've heard different things about the nature of the original EU being canon
i didn't really get into EU much besides KOTOR and that jedi outcast video game, but i'm guessing it's gotta be better than what disney threw together for their sequel trilogy.
The EU has a lot of crap, but, if I recall correctly, it was never absolute canon. But with Disney, everything new is canon even when most of it is shit - or at least worse than much of the stuff they wiped out
Probably not, Zahn wrote some great material.
Thrawn was an incredible foe.
FUCK NO.
Didn't stop Disney 'reclassifying' it as Legends.
Practically all post-ROTJ stuff was automatically invalidated by TFA. But yeah, they just said even the pre-PT stuff was all out, officially.
>mfw Lucasarts usually came up with class SW games, and now we get EA instead.
No because the EU had lots of really fun and interesting things going on in it that managed to actually move Star Wars beyond the Skywalker family drama while still feeling like Starwas, especially the Jedi-Sith stuff, which is something the new lore has been as of yet unable to pull off.
Yes because it was a bloated mess filled with everyone's cousin's friend's fan fic self insert Grey Jedi who wields a six bladed lightsaber and a whole bunch of other terrible shit.
Lucas film and Disney have been hinting at Old Republic stuff for a over 5 years now and have even begun to include as canon elements from that era, so we will likely see some version of the Old Republic timeline with the Sith and Mandalorian Wars eventually as they have been confirmed to have happened. It also seems like there is just some kind of block that people struggle with when it comes to writing stuff set after ROTJ as both much of the original EU and the new sequel trilogy shows.
This.
Sure. The EU was never taken seriously anyway.
It's not hard to top what Disney did since they couldn't even get the main 3 back together.
So they could have recasted the main 3 and Lando and properly done the EU, and at the end of Episode 9 young Luke could have a vision of the original cast together in the same scene thereby topping what we got.
