yeah, we don't get any view of the WW side of things, but it's not difficult to come up with possibilities.
for example:

honestly this whole thing just gives me skyrim vibes. substitute a civil war for whatever this war is, substitute alduin worldeater for the nightking.
but then also consider that there is a lot of religious stuff going on- not only is there a religious fanaticism plot; but there's also this lord of light cult stuff. religion is playing a big part in the story, and it tying into the WWs would not be surprising. We saw the nightking being "created", but we don't know if that's really the start of the nightking. It could simply be an incarnation of a god into a physical form.
thus far, of the deities which appear to possess some actual power, we have

So I would argue that, while we don't know his motivation, it would not be difficult for him to be given one- a reasonably good one- at some time in the near future.
