You could argue the TFA one makes sense because they were revamping a beloved series. But when RO came around it was just gratuitous for the sake of sorta nostalgia-baiting. But I don't know why, they're their own people and have opinions that aren't necessarily going to be consistent throughout their life. But I doubt you actually wanted to know why anyway.

Because TFA was the first to do it, duh. Its fanservice came as a reminder of what people liked about the original trilogy, which was especially necessary after the travesty that was the prequels. But after it's been done once, of course the second attempt to do the same would be mocked.

I fully support Cuphead. I'm a huge fan of old Tex Avery type cartoons and all that. I love the pain staking attention to detail put into the animation. I do think it can be an awesome and addictive experience. I personally used to get the same feeling from the Hotline Miami games. I guess I'm just trying to say I think it's a valid critique, but I 100% think calling it "just Contra" is super reductive. I think they were mainly responding at the time in the sense of the "hype"

Every Street Fighter is a Street Fighter. But If I go to compare with other series, they have mechanics that set them apart. Virtua Fighter has the technical grappling system, Tekken and Soul Calibur utilize the 3d plane, MvC has team-based combat, and GG has a whole plethora of various mechanics put into it, not to mention much higher speed. There's nothing that sets Cuphead's basic gameplay apart from the old side-scrollers. There's only the visual presentation.

Yeah, I totally feel you. I do like Rich and RLM in general quite a bit, but they do seem to take an easy, if not contrarian side on a lot of media. I think it's more impulse than analysis.

But also, even though I love Hotline Miami, if someone told me it was more style over substance I could agree. However, in cases like Cuphead and HM, I think it's completely justified to have simplex enjoyable, game play when the focus is the style like the art and music. I think it can appear reductive when framed like "JUST Contra" but Contra is popular for a reason, I suppose. That's a good mix when you have the substance of a popular game plus an amazing style. I dunno. I'm not even sure what I'm trying to say, but I feel you. I don't agree 100% with Youtubers I enjoy

i guess the thing is: the charm of both these games is that how simple it is to understand the gameplay mechanic and at the same time how much style they have. they are hard but they dont get boring like old games of that era used to be.

It's also nice to play them casually when you feel like it but other times you can lose yourself in it for hours. I liken it to CS:S gun game but with more pleasing imagery, but even that is reductive.

But it does. It's something that existed for over twenty years. Games have been growing all this time. There are games with more depth, and there are other games with unique and stylish presentation. Cuphead is JUST a sidescroller. It's nice that you like it, enjoy it to your fullest, but your personal preference doesn't change the fact that compared to countless other games, even within its Cuphead is outdated. In the same vein that Avatar gets to be critiqued for its story being just Dances with Wolves, Cuphead's primary detriment is its lack of evolution for the standards put before its medium. A game's primary merit is always its gameplay. Nobody argues the amazing amount of work and talent that went into making it look impeccably like the old cartoons, but at the end of the day it's the same old game we've played hundreds of times before.
