I think this was hated back then because people excpected a comedy in the style of American Pie, Roadtrip and all those other movies that were popular back then and it was basically marketed as such. But instead they got this almost Harmony Korine type of art film.

Same, I see people lambasting it all the time, but I think it's thoroughly enjoyable.

It's a vanity project taking the piss out of itself and it's alluding to getting fingered up the ass and getting fingered as in being pigeon holed. Very post modern. The polaroids in the background are also referencing tomgreen.com - a website whose whole purpose is/was to crash your computer/browser. Green is annoying for its own sake. He's framing you the viewer as the judge of all. The website mentioned tries to load fucktons of videos all at the same time once you go there.
