I haven't seen the rest of his work

80 iq mongrel dont quote me again
Clockwork is his best film and you can't argue that.
it's his most thought provoking and well directed film to date
Newfag.
Also Barry Lyndon has some of the worst acting Iv'e ever seen and the music is out of place and way too loud.
I unintentionally laughed multiple times
>not a hack
Barry Lyndon>Eye Wide Shut>Lolita>Dr. Strangelove>Clockwork Orange>Shining
My three favorites of his are A Clockwork Orange, Barry Lyndon and Eyes Wide Shut.

What did you like about Barry Lyndon?
wtf why didn't you ask me that fuck u fagboi
Stanley Cutebrick
Ok what did you like about Barry Lyndon
2001 is garbage
Change my mind
I won't try to do that but all of his films are like narrative-based Arabesques.... Who is commenting most on what Kubrick established? Kybrick's films introduced viewers to far more levels of irony and outside the realm of criticism, I think Nolan's Inception tried hardest to structuralize the dynamic of 21st century irony. 2001 and Interstellar also bear some vague sort of inspiration.
It seems funny that Clockwork appears to be his least morally relativistic film but there's still an arbitrary aspect to Alex's story.
2001 is half movie and half showcase of how our lives were expected to be in 40 years. It was like a film version of a World Fair
kubrick ipads look cooler than irl ipads
>It seems funny that Clockwork appears to be his least morally relativistic film
Spartacus, Paths of glory, Shining, 2001, Dr Strangelove and Barry Lyndon are hardly what you would call morally relativistic
Dropped. Even indie arthouse flicks manage to film on location in New York
>flying on airplanes
>leaving the uk
no thanks
what is the most tryhard contrarian movie to say is Kubrick's best?
Fear and Desire?
Spartacus?

>dat cymbal clash tho
Not him, but it is a great story about a man losing his naivety. It also is a stunning looking movie.
They are jolly green giants walking the Earth, battling for the honor of Mickey Mouse.
it was a metaphor dumdums
>actually wrote out instructions for how to use
sure it was pal
>Also Barry Lyndon has some of the worst acting Iv'e ever seen and the music is out of place and way too loud.
False on both counts. Name one scene with bad acting.
Not even remotely true.
>Change my mind
>>>twitter
kubrick has a fetish for building all the lighting into the set design
that alone makes it crazy historically relevant in terms of production history.
Also best use of front projection ever. Captured weightlessness using practical on set effects ez. Predicted all kinds of technologies. Etc. Everything about the production design was innovative and incredibly well thought out etc.
In terms of editing and shot choices and pacing and music use and the third act spiraling out into subjective chaos after 2 hours of objective perspective and everything else was fucking decades ahead of what anyone else was thinking about doing.
It was the ultimate anti-normalfag movie, and it was expensive and heavily marketed so it bamboozled the FUCK out of people expecting some Flash Gordon shit. This is in the middle of the "hippy crisis" and all the other chaos going on, this fucking boring psychedelic fuck you space movie is in every theater. It was an event movie before they even existed. And it was designed around being a theater experience. If you want to rewatch the end you gotta sit there and contemplate the future and the great beyond and whatever the fuck. The movie stayed in theaters forever because everyone kept spreading the word by arguing about that fucking movie.
>When Stanley Kubrick died, he left behind literally thousands of boxes full of archive material, so much that he became frustrated with the storage boxes available to him. He worked out what he felt was the optimum size for a box in terms of storage space and ease of handling. and consulted with a custom box building company to deliver boxes to his design. He specified that the lids should be “not too tight, not too loose but JUST PERFECT“. According to an internal memo from the box company they noted “fussy customer, make sure the lids slide off properly” during their manufacture.
fucking shot on candlelight brah
His moon landing film was breddy gud
WHAT did he mean by this?
Rockets are phallic symbols. This one pointing directly to his mouth implying sexual abuse perpetrated by Jack.
moon landing doco was a hoax , but interesting
strangelove > shinning > full metal jacket >eyes wide shut > clockwork >2001

Based ourselves, fuck women (literally and unironically)
Could he have made capeshit or animes?
Lolita
also, America swallowing the lie that we sent man to the moon
I don’t pretend to have known Stanley Kubrick, I only ever worked with him one time and our fax and telephone communications lasted less than 2 weeks - including time with his producers. So, to be clear, we never actually met in person.
In 1987 Kubrick’s film “Full Metal Jacket” had been translated into Japanese and was on the verge of release when Kubrick suddenly demanded that the Japanese distributor provide a re-translation of the Japanese subtitles, back into English. He wanted to be sure the Japanese version was an exact rendering of his original English.
The Tokyo distributor gave me the Japanese script and told me to re-translate the work of Toda Natsuko, Japan’s premier subtitler of foreign films, back into English.
It was a fucking nightmare, from both sides, who were equally intransigent.
There were a total of 112 queries from Kubrick, here’s one.
Kubrick could not comprehend that there was no Japanese equivalent to “motherfucker.” If you called a Japanese adult a motherfucker, he’d wince and think “My mother? Really? People fuck their mothers?” Toda-san had used a loose equivalent to “lowly-bastard” instead of “motherfucker.”
youtube.com
Just noticed this existed. Haven't listened to it. Stoked.
Kubrick demanded a literal translation to a son who fucks his mother. He said he knew that Japanese and other East Asian cultures revered their elders, so “motherfucker” would be the most gross insult in any language. He wanted Toda-san to change her culturally appropriate translation to the very clunky “Die you, who has sex with his mother!”
Toda-san, not surprisingly, told me in no uncertain terms, to tell Kubrick that all her one thousand+ subtitles were accurate and appropriate and subtitle-ready, so could we please stop fucking her around.
Toda-san was pissed, Kubrick wasn’t having it and the distributor who’d given me the gig just wanted everything sorted so they could release the damn film, for chrissakes. Finally, the president of the Japanese movie company spoke to one of Kubrick’s producers and all sides agreed to meet in London to set things straight. From then on, it was out of my hands.
I was surprised that someone as urbane as Kubrick seemed unable to grasp the fact that exact translations are few and far between. “I’ll crush your head like a walnut” works perfectly well in Polish, but falls flat in the Philippines where “take your head with a sugar-cane knife” is far more relatable. In Japanese, ‘motherfucker’ looks clumsy, forced. Kubrick was insisting that Toda-san use unnatural, clumsy language, believing this would retain his signature touch in the Japanese version of his dialogue.
Fools to the left of me, jokers to the right,
there I was, stuck in the middle
Stu
Anyway, Toda-san didn’t speak to me for 5 years, the head of the Nippon Herald blamed me for upsetting Kubrick and the Master himself told them I was “difficult to work with.” I never really re-established my relationship with the distributor (Nippon Herald) until 10 years later when my translation of “Unagi” won the Palm d’Or in 1997.
Hitler was right about everything and consumerism is the real fascism.
>Kubrick asked Watson for a pre-print copy of his Warhammer 40,000 tie-in novel Inquisitor. Watson quotes Kubrick as saying, "Who knows, Ian? Maybe this is my next movie?
Why did he have to die so soon bros?
>tfw fussy customer
The most tryhard contrian Kubrick opinion one can have is to say that the second half of Full Metal Jacket was better
He shoot in film how jewish/masonic/illuminati/whatever parties really work. The (J)EWS cut scenes are about murdering Lili Sobieski's character at the mask party as a way of initation in that cult.
Now you are also in danger for knowing this. Good luck.
it was tho
>implying it wasnt
Adam Baldwin deserved a better career in films
>implying FMJ isn't 3 acts
>implying calling the first act "the first half" doesn't out you as a bleb
The second half is good but if you had watched it without knowing Kubrick directed it, you'd never have guessed. Meanwhile the first half has him written all over it
Danny represents the future. The 2001 utopia. Jack is a white American male driven mad by American Exceptionalism and manifest destiny and his own mortality. He spends all day shitposting by himself and being agitated toward self-destruction by foreign agitators and the ghosts of history.
most of kubrick's war stuff features hand held monkey cam shit. He's got the one handheld shot in 2001 when Dave is heading to kill Hal.
And starting the movie with SUPER structured, balanced shots on dollies and then maintaining that until the Tet Offensive and slowly bringing in more hand held and chaotic shots is kind of the rhythm of the movie.
>rating shining or lolita that high compared to 2001 and barry lyndon
the eternal pleb strikes again
"Yeah I have a, you know a compac 2 you know the 286, 20 megabyte hard drive, and I use uh you know word processing, database, and spreadsheet. Which is tremendous."
-Stanley Kubrick, 1987
>best historical drama ever
he made schindlers list too?
"Critical opinion on my films is always more or less been settled by what I would call subsequent critical opinion. The initial reaction to most the films are usually wrong."
More like: what did he mean by THESE?
He didn't viddy so well.
fuck lids & fuck jannies

Why does it matter? It was a dream anyway.
If that’s the interview I think it is, then it’s the one with the really annoying interviewer who asks shit questions for 2 hours.
implying that's not every interview with him
the 87 and 68 interviews he's just so annoyed by how dumb and uninformed the interviewer is
Could have sworn he said somewhere that he was a fan of Akira but can't find it
I miss this nigga like you wouldn't believe
this
it was so good they banned it!
Thoughts on this artwork?
reddi-t
Evangelion is the anime equivalent of a Kubrick film.
I actually been on reddit like 6 times in my life. So I don't know much about the side. What's wrong with it?
breddy neat
redpilled and checked
I think Evangelion would be heavy handed for Kubrick, I think Gunbuster would be a better example.
Animefags are funny, Evangelion is a cancerous franchise made for basement dwellers that want to feel intelectually challenged without any mental work. You go to Guillermo del Toro for that shit
the haunted injun burial ground that is the united states is the Overlook hotel. Jack is the average frustrated white man in America having a great burden put upon him by his society and cultural expectations that have burned into his sense of self. At first he tried to beat this into his son, the future, but accidentally broke his arm. He impotently watches as his son gets unduly influenced by outsiders and the former slave class using their spooky negroid magic on him and making the future look and act different than Jack expected it to.
And instead of learning to navigate the maze with his family, Jack spends his time staring at a model of it with a vacant expression. He spends no time trying to learn anything about the Overlook or the future and spends all his time endlessly burying himself in meaningless busywork as a distraction.
tldr He's "postmodern man" in America struggling at the crossroads between the past and the future, being driven mad by the expectation put on him, haunted by the ghosts of the pasts, threatened by encroaching influence from the former slave race, frustrated by his inability to understand things he refuses to engage with, and spirals out into self-sabotage and attempts to destroy the future.
tldrtldr: kubrick had mixed feelings about Manifest Destiny.
Shining was shit, strangelove was overrated
Last year a paranormal documentary from the early 1980s was unearthed. A Japanese film crew travelled to Elstree Studios in London, where The Shining was shot, to investigate reports of paranormal activity on the set - because there were several accidents and a major fire during the production.
They ended up spending the day with a 20 year old Vivian Kubrick who gave them a tour of Stanley’s office and workspace. She showed them a treasure trove of all the props from all of his movies up to that point, which were kept in boxes in the studio offices. It’s hilarious that a bunch of ghost-hunting retards who were mostly uninterested in all this stuff got so much access. They even got a phone interview with Kubrick at the end where they ask him about the conclusions of 2OO1 and The Shining and what the movies meant.
this is very interesting, if true.
Where do you stand on this issue?
Was it the grossness of the insult that he focused on or the exact translation he was after?
My mother language hasn't an established translation for insults relating to the family or sex,. will have to check how our translater translates that part.
Perhaps Kubrick wasn't as bilingual as one would expect?
Strangelove > 2001 > Barry Lyndon > A Clockwork Orange > Paths > The Shining > Lolita > FMJ > Eyes Wide Shut > The Killing
looks dope
>japanese ghost hunters
lol
Tarkovsky for normies
EWS > Strangelove > 2001 > 1st half of fmj> lolita > lyndon > clockwork
Kubrick's PA explaining his passion for 5 second tv spots to some japanese ghost hunter
This is a must watch. Vivian is cute as fuck but her voice is uneasily similar to her father’s.
He was the best director of all time period. His attention to detail, reclusiveness and rate of work is what all other filmmakers should aspire to.
why the fuck does she work in those lighting conditions
by God Lord Bullington, what do you mean?
>He was the best director of all time period
That's not Welles, or Hitchcock, or Spielberg, or Scorsese, or James Cameron
His mastery of each genre on the first attempt is amazing.
I'll never watch it again, but I enjoyed it enough
the shining and EWS have been the only rewatchable Kubricks for me so far
barry lyndon I feel is very rewatchable too though I still haven't
>wake up
>see this
What do?
Ask him if I should headshot the president.
>qt 1980 vivian kubrick will NEVER show you her camera
I like how basically everyone is just off in their own world and some fucking japanese camera walk up and they're just like "here let me explain how I made my documentary real quick" unprompted.
Mr. Kubrick, your hairline...
why didn't she become a drektor
Stanley would be devastated by how Vivian’s life turned out.
>A musician and composer, by late 1998, she had become a member of the Church of Scientology. About this time, she was asked by her father to compose the score for Eyes Wide Shut, which was in post-production in London. Instead, the two had a falling out and Vivian returned to her home in California, with vain attempts by her father to get her to return. She would soon do just that, but this time to attend her father's funeral with a Scientology handler accompanying. She has since been estranged from her family. She did not come to visit her sister Anya when she was dying from cancer in 2009 and did not attend her funeral that same year, despite the two being very close while growing up.
:(
Interviewer: (hasn't said anything in 10 minutes)
Vivian:
