KING CONAN
There isn't an actor alive who is manly enough to play Conan. Arnie was the closest we ever got.
Calum Von Moger proves you wrong.
no, way to problematic
Is it Disney?
Is it Capeshit?
Is it Nostalgic?
if the answer to all 3 is no, then no it doesn't
Almost all scifi and fantasy now a days has to be 100% serious and dark, as well as molded on true and tested tropes. Sword and Sorcery/Sandal can take any tone but almost always has an optimistic feel of adventure at it's core that doesn't mesh with the current "genre landscape" which really sucks because I think something with the feel of old pulp or 70's era DnD could really breath some fresh air into this gross tepid genre.
The only alternative to super serious is something obviously tolkien-esque that is constantly poking fun at itself. This in my mind is just as bad because anything that is so self-referential and not pure comedy can rarely turn out well.
70's style fun pulp sf is actually making a comeback. Look at the popularity of Thor Ragnarok or GotG, they are mad good and have that right balance of fun/serious
Did you not read what that guy said? Both of those reek of meta self referential garbage quip humor
A true to the stories Conan TV show or gods willing, a video game (in the style of The Witcher 3) would be fucking god-tier and has the potential to be better than GoT.
>All that mystery and magic.
>The world slowly revealed to the audience through each new adventure Conan has.
>Even though he looks like a meathead he actually outsmarts and outwits his opponents every time
The important thing is to capture the 'fantasy' and 'sorcery' elements and not making it too grimdark, realistic or cynical like the recent Conan and Hercules movies. If anything it should be more like the old Hercules TV show with Kevin Sorbo.
I havent seen either but Ragnarok looked like it had the Kirby colors down right which is a step in the right direction towards palette-freedom. I also havent seen that more recent Conan movie (with the aquaman/GoT guy) which came off as very palette-restricted despite also being of similar pulp origin.
I think 70's aesthetic in general is becoming more "in" atleast from what I've seen in music. Big boom in doom metal with pic related art style.
On further thought, I know metal and pulpy-fantasy have always been linked but I just mean that style has become popular again when a few years back you'd see a lot more warcraft/warhammer-inspired metal with artwork like pic-related.
Maybe when this post-stranger things 80's craze ends the new era to look back on will be mid-70's. Although having the mainstream latching on probably wouldn't really be a good thing.
It's already made a bit of a comeback. A few weeks ago The Head Hunter dropped which was Sword & Sorcery AND Horror kino. Last year you had the Russian film Skif/The Scythian/The Last Warrior drop. And then you have Mandy which is basically a Sword & Sorcery film hopped up on LSD that takes place in the backwoods of California in 1983.
You have no idea what Sword & Sorcery is; which is understandable since its very name is WAY too broad.
best songs on these albums?
yes
Not these days. S&S needs at least 10 or 20 random naked bimbos weaving in and out of the story. Good luck having that happen without every single one getting some kind of female empowerment arc.
It will be tits and dragons going forward.
youtube.com
started off great then he started screaming like a retarded child
No, it's impossible in the current political climate. Masculinity has been redefined as toxic. Male strength is demonized. The entire purpose of the entertainment industry in the current year is to emasculate men and elevate women above them.
No its too problematic
Only if the genders are reversed.
>S&S needs at least 10 or 20 random naked bimbos weaving in and out of the story.
It's sad that shit like this is what normies most associate with the greatness that is Sword & Sorcery. The only reason Robert E. Howard (the creator of S&S) added half naked and pliant women to some of his Conan stories was because he was desperate for money at the time and knew those stories would sell easily enough to Weird Tales. And they might even draw a cover for that particular issue featuring a scene from one of those stories which would also mean extra money for him.
Not if demographic trend continue.
more like this
>I know metal and pulpy-fantasy have always been linked
In that vein, here is an excellent song
Panthers - Goblin City
youtu.be
It's not *necessary*, per se, but it's certainly a feature that's part of the whole package. I don't give a shit why he did or did not put big bosomed beauties on these covers. And let's not pretend like the S&S genre doesn't include all those great TnA fantasy shitshows in the 80s like Sorceress and Deathstalker.
Nobody writes S&S about losers like you who dont have an assortment of bimbos coming through their life
>not posting Manowar
I like Celestial Glow (the ending track) on the first. Literally just picked the second off bandcamp because the art was what I was looking for. Never listened.
Now that I try to think of it I can't actually think of many album covers I remember that have that feel yours has.
I agree it's a defined feature. I'd just be worried that if any S&S show/move got picked up that it would turn into GoT with all the NUDITY BECAUSE NUDITY IS WHAT THE NORMIES R HERE FOR LOL.
Good thread lads.
>I don't give a shit why he did or did not put big bosomed beauties on these covers
You should though. It's wrong to glorify something not even Howard really wanted. I have no problem with half-naked women of course, but Frazetta, despite being the greatest fantasy artist of all time, really did a disservice to S&S by painting all those Conan pictures he did featuring all those women AND Conan himself half-naked. It's focusing on the weakest aspect of the weakest stories.
I want to die
This isn't fucking sword and sorcery. This is 12 year old faggy nonsense. For a real example, look up Hawk the Slayer. Or Dragonslayer. Or Ladyhawke.
Reeeee...
If I found out that PB&J sandwiches only include jelly because Smucker's bribed Jiffy and Wonder Bread to include it in their marketing campaign, it wouldn't make PB&Js less appealing and I wouldn't go "Um, well, ackshually, it's *supposed to be* a peanut butter sandwich, but Smucker's butted in and blah blah blah"
>YOU'D RATHER MODERN CREATORS FOCUS ON THE GOOD ASPECTS OF THE ORIGINAL CONAN STORIES AND THUS SWORD & SORCERY ITSELF RATHER THAN THE SUPERFLUOUS ASPECTS? LOL WHAT A LOSER
>Celestial Glow
thanks lad that was pretty cool. Will look into more beastmaster shit. Dont like inferni so far
ladyhawke is kino
Reminder that Gene Wolfe died last week. The Wizard Knight had some great Howard-Esque moments in it. He also wrote a s&s short story dedicated to Howard. Maybe now that he’s dead people will start to notice him more.
sick rec
>IF IT GOTS DUH BEWBIES DEN DAT MAKES IT GEWD
Jesus. Game of Thrones featured plenty of naked women and that didn't make it good.
To me, the type of S&S I want to see is embodied in a creepy scene where our shirtless, chiseled-chest barbarian protagonist descends into some seemingly-abandoned subterranean temple, runs into a witch who tries to seduce him, then after we've gotten a good view of her tits and fiery-red bush, something snaps him out of it and he stabs her and she turns into a fucking crone. Then he snatches the whatever and runs away from the draugr-types she sicks on him. After he gets out, he sells it to some local lord and spends his money on whores and booze. The plot doesn't actually kick off until he gets into a drunken fight with some local big shot. We never see that witch again, but there are other tits and ass on display throughout. Also little people in little suits of armor.
Fantasy movies are shit and you guys got me into watching garbage like Conan. Fuck off.
You should check out Cauldron Born. The guitarist for that band also writes Sword & Sorcery. Has his own collection called The Snake-Man's Bane.
Stick to capeshit, virgin.
Isn't he that Arnold impersonator?
A visual Conan depiction without tits and pecs would be like a Lovecraft depiction without tentacles or gratuitous New England accents. Probably a lot better but not as familiar/comfy.
However I think the distinction is that where as obvious flashy 40/50's era thicc slim women would be obvious and overdone at that time if such a thing was included now a days it would be against the grain. The reason superhero movies don't have giant-jugged amazons as all of the women characters is because you're not "supposed" to do that anymore. I think the slobber-inducing babes is one of the few parts of S&S tradition that would stand out despite being so obvious at first glance.
This show is going to suck ass. Shame too because Witcher could have easily become the next LotR or GoT, but instead we get mutts everywhere with zero attractive women.
>the next LotR or GoT
It's already a very successful videogame series and I think that's enough. I'd just rather they didn't make a netflix Witcher at all.
wait gene wolfe died oh shit loved his books hopefully more people appreciate his work as time goes on
>Gene Wolfe died last week
man I hadn't head that
I'm sad now
A faithfully written and justly casted Conan series would be GOAT.
>I think the slobber-inducing babes is one of the few parts of S&S tradition that would stand out despite being so obvious at first glance.
There was a slate of terrible S&S films in the 80s that did exactly this and all that happened was it made S&S seem like the shittiest and most shallow fantasy genre. It's also why the vast majority of S&S from that boom period in the 70s is also terrible: those writers focused on the most shallow aspects of the worst original Conan stories. I'm not saying there can't be or should't be nude women, but thinking that's one of the most important aspects of S&S and that it's necessary is admitting you don't know what S&S is TRULY about. By all means have naked women if it's actually pertinent to the story or characters or even the setting itself, but don't go the route all those godawful movies in the 80s or books in the 70s did.
The original Conan movie had a colored guy, a “strong” woman, and some made up asian fag. It was diversity horse shit before any of us were born and we jack off to it because of nostalgia. Make this film again with the same cast and there would be 800 threads a day but hung about it
you didn’t give a fuck about him until 20 minutes ago. fuck off
Didn't they remake it in like 08 with Aquaman and it was a flop?
You're a fag.
I don't disagree that it's shallow. I just think that since it's a part that would be controversial it could be a sort of line of first defense for controversy. I'd rather critics be pissed about and subsequently try to remove the sex than other controversial elements like say potentially """problematic""" portrayals of (real or fantastical) ethnicities, period accurate social values, or most importantly non-ADHD storytelling.
Now that I think about it maybe such a thing would be best told in a television series length serial. That way you could avoid overt nudity. Still though it would be nice to have women with meat rather than the casting standard of flat, thin, or paunchy filling out those tv-appropriate outfits.
People who google something, then ask a question about it like it's off the top of their head, are the biggest waste of the internet.
I’m sorry dear, did I trigger you?
I said you're a faggot. Go dilate.
I saw some compilation video about him a couple weeks ago on youtube and the name sounded familiar.
Not in our lifetime unfortunately....for obvious reasons
All the things you listed had sense in the movie. The villain was supposed to be a man of an extinct race, hence the black skin, straight hait and blue eyes. Conan was enslaved in the eastern steppes, in a place that would be like Kazakhstan today, so it's normal he would meat subotai there. The woman was very realistic and matches the few "strong women" I met in real life. You're a faggot, the another user is right. I bet you look disgusting
Calum von injury you mean
He isn’t an actor. Didn’t you see his full on cringe try out in generation iron 2 Where he just went speechless and nearly started crying and sweating during his audition?
Hold on. What actual makes something fall under the classification of 'Sword and Sorcery?'
Cowboys killed all the writers?
I don't think he meant it in a bad way, I think he was just musing that IF it were done today it wouldn't be sensical like the Arnold version.
>who is Henry Cavill
No, he meant the usual retarded bullshit "if it was made today you guys would be angry because you are boomer hypocrites". Litetally underage thinking
That honestly just sounds like the Conan movie with Arnie dude.
nice vein
Grittier fantasy with a healthy dose of horror that's usually smaller in scope story wise with protagonists who are outsiders or only out for themselves and a heavy focus on action and mystery and weirdness overall. That's a rough description of Sword & Sorcery and by no means is all of that set in stone, but in its most original form it has all those elements.
And what media would you say demonstrates all these elements of sword and sorcery?
If you want a recent example in movie form I'd suggest The Head Hunter which just came out. The only thing it lacks is the 'action' I listed because it's an extremely small-budgeted film and simply couldn't afford to film a ton of action scenes. BUT it has everything else I listed. And don't let the fact that it had a tiny budget dissuade you from watching it; it LOOKS like a much bigger budgeted film and it has nothing but good reviews. Or you could go directly to the source and read the original Conan stories by Robert E. Howard. My personal favorite story is The Scarlet Citadel. Read that if you're ever interested.
I just want to watch big, sweaty naked men killing monsters.
Is that so much to ask?
ur an idiiot
I dont see how in this climate.
Maybe in the Philippines or with some ISIS funded production.
Solomon Kane
I'm sowwy ;(
um....
Based Carl
I'd watch it but its gotta have style
The classic vibe of (swords & sorcery & pussy & weed & cocaine & lsd & rock/metal & dragons) is so fucking kino
No, unless they finnaly get to making King Conan
Which God I hope they do
>cocaine
I think this is an odd one out here
Its there.
>sword and sorcery
>conan
>sorcery
it has barely any sorcery. just like any western fantasy
Please don't comment on things you know nothing about.
Beefy insects are my jam
fugg u, and if by sorcery you mean high-fantasy headachess DUBBLE FUGG U
>Better Than Raw
great fucking album.
Sadly only Sword and Sóycery nowadays
>High Budget 2019 technology
>Looks inferior compared with low budget 2002 shit
how is this even possible
I just want a comfy Gor series
Pulp scifi and fantasy are my favorite genres. I fucking hope so.
Phoenix on the Sword, the first published Conan story (and a great route to adapt King Conan) had two fucking wizards trying to kill him.
Dumbass.
sadly we can't have patriarchy fantasy in current era
When it gets a revival we know SJWs dominating media is over. Might happen but I don't see it in the next years. Thank dog we had the 80s at least.
>Imagine the smell
Is this an older series? The art on the hunters book looks rather modern.
Never.
S&S is now considered too "immature" and lacking "deepness" because the plebs are raised on Game of Thrones and Witcher.
Anyone who's read a Conan book knows it can be pretty deep in a primal sorta way. It speaks to that masculine, primal sort of side of us.
I recommend you to read the stories. They have tons of sorcery. Also, the movie had sorcery in it.
>white males rescuing helpless women from primitive monkey people
i don't think so.
It's always the same. Tv-tier entertainment.
Transman of Gor? How progressive.
Make the hero a big, strong, burly black man rescuing enslaved white women from their evil white masters.
If they make fantasy movies in the vein of Marvel movies they may as well not fucking bother. No self aware humour, no quips, no CGI, no metal music, no twinks, no modern politics, no slow mo fight scenes. If it wants to be a good S&S movie it has to limit itself to the same limitations and tone of the first Conan movie. But that'll never happen, movies are made to get retards and chinks in the theatre, so all future sword and sorcery movies will be marvel ripoffs with a dull empty story bloated by shitty cgi.
Sucks because there are only a handful of really solid S&S movies out there and I've seen them all.
There's something sobering about the fact that Robert E. Howard wrote all his heavy-hitters in his 20s then shot himself at 30, while most of us including me are wasting our youth and will live past 30 while making little of value. Reading his stuff makes me want to get my shit together
>tfw 34 and still haven't started the novel I always wanted to publish
I'm such a fucking failure. Shooting myself now would mean nothing. Like me.
>Does sword and sorcery have a shot at making a comeback?
Sure. But now, the women will be holding the swords and the nu-men will wear thongs .
What's your novel about user. I'd read it.
Wasnt there one Conan story where he had a self insert who wanted to be a hero too but when he died collapsing some tunnel to save his village no one noticed where he went or cared that he was gone? I don't think Howard had a very good image of himself.
Also I might be mixing him up with other writers but wasnt the reason he shot himself because his mom died and he was very very close to her?
It's not like I have aspirations of writing high art or anything, most of my ideas of pulp scifi and fantasy, probably trashy genre fiction to a lot of people.
The one i'm thinking of committing to first is a spooky small town mystery/horror sorta story set in 1995 in a shitty little town in the middle of nowhere Florida. Think Scooby Doo meets Paranormal meets Kolchak the Night Stalker staring characters you'd expect to die first in a slasher movie.
I'm not sure what category to put it in though. I feel like i'd be too ashamed to put it in Young Adult. Maybe just adult, I dunno. The main two characters are 17 at the start and turn 18 over the course of the story, though most of the other characters are between 20's, 40's and 50's.
If it does well i'd love to write a follow up with some different scenarios and plots.
Thorgal cinematic universe anyone?
Calum Von Moger proves you wrong
youtube.com
Or a Storm trilogy perhaps?
The first book was published in 1966
the last one in 2016
>i'm not like other girls
Look at this shit. Nazis and panther beasts. How could this not be in instant success?
There was a conan movie like 4 years ago incel
Rich world. Lots of weird creatures and settings. Swords, guns, muscled heroes and big boobed bimbos.
And even armor wearing, sword wielding dinosaurs
>2011
She really is one of those types despite me foolishly thinking otherwise in our younger years. Still have found memories though.
Thor inspired by Esad Ribic could be a nice epic dark pilp fantasy movie
I have this, bought it at a bookstore. Like in one of those thick compilations. It was so fucking fun. Switching to Jane Foster later on was such a downer.
There is also this stand alone story by the same artist where the main character is Loki.
Hope I'm not too late. But is there any good Sword & Sorcery other than Conan?
We need something on the scale of LOTR but R-rated and filled with tits, ass, pussy, blood and gore!!!FACT!!!
White male power fantasy? Ummm no... Just no
Dear god... the old comic where Conan crossed paths with Captain America was already horrible.
There's an old elseworlds story from like the 70's or 80's where Thor meets Conan after being sent back in time and losing his godly power. It's really really fun.
frieza getting rekt lmao
That at least makes kind of sense. The Captain America/Thor story was just Conan doing a time warp and ending up as a gang boss in New York.
Conan doesn't skip leg day.
It's great, Thor and Conan take a sort of road trip, Conan thinks Thor is crazy for believing he's a god, Thor meets Crom who fucks his shit up and tells him his kind shouldn't be in power in this timeline and thinks he wants to take power from him, Thor and Conan bant like mad at each other and becomes bros, they fight a wizard. It's great.
Howard's other creations such as Solomon Kane, Kull, and Bran Mak Morn.
Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser by Fritz Leiber.
Elric by Michael Moorcock.
The Kane novels by Karl Edward Wagner.
The Drenai novels by David Gemmell.
Something more modern would be the Brutal series by James Alderdice.
It's called Game of Thrones and it's terrible.
Any modern S&S should embrace the corniness of the occult and go full dungeon synth. Dread, mud and death. Harpsichord not orchestral chants, okay?
youtube.com
Hey, the first four seasons are fucking amazing
> a Lovecraft depiction without tentacles or gratuitous New England accents
too good to be true?
Yes and it was pretty rad
>ywn wake up hungover with a dragon bro on an Amazonian island
>It's called Game of Thrones and it's terrible.
So I've heard which is why I don't watch it. But I'm talking about something primal like the original Conan without the long winded political bullshit!!!FACT!!!
>But I'm talking about something primal like the original Conan without the long winded political bullshit!!!FACT!!!
It's called Sword & Sorcery and we've been discussing it for a few hours now. I understand what you're saying, but this is precisely what Sword & Sorcery is: a darker, grittier form of heroic fantasy with the focus on action, adventure, mystery, and weirdness. Since Sword & Sorcery came directly from the pulp magazines it had to grab readers attention right away and not bore the shit out of them with crap like politics and bloat associated with epic fantasy like Game of Thrones.
>a darker, grittier form of heroic fantasy with the focus on action, adventure, mystery, and weirdness.
That's what I want too but not "muh washed out gritty cinematography!!!" like that fuck awful Conan redux from several years back. Imagine a Conan flick but with the style and color palette of Bram Stoker's Dracula!!!FACT!!!
You should check out The Scythian/The Last Warrior/Skif. It's very bloody and violent. Like a Sword & Sorcery Fury Road without any of the feminist bullshit from that film.
>You should check out The Scythian/The Last Warrior/Skif. It's very bloody and violent. Like a Sword & Sorcery Fury Road without any of the feminist bullshit from that film.
I will and I fucking loathed Mad Maxine: Feminist Road, thanks!!!FACT!!!
what was the name of that song/band from that "epic opera metal" song often used on many of the YTMND pages?
whoa whoa WHOA
... racist and sexist much?
There’ll a big masculinity pushback in a few years (driven by women as much as anyone) and sword and sorcery mght make a comeback.
Even now the masculinity in kids entertainment is there. I can’t think of a better antiNarrative antiSJW bullshit figure for kids my age than Captain America today.
everything past
>pussy
revealed how much of a huge faggot you are
The movie I recommended here is supremely masculine. Of course it's from Russia so that explains how such a testosterone-laden movie could still be made these days.
True to the stories Conan TV show would have all the civilized city dwellers be soft pussies, which makes the one semi-savage Cimmerian look like Superman in comparison. It would also have no sex scenes, but at least one PG-13 scene of a dainty woman being crushed in Conan's arms per episode.
its also an unedited try out video
what a dumb fucking mistake for her to even show that off but then again shes basically fucked the show with the casting choices so i shouldnt be surprised women ruin everything
A netflix D and D show could potentially work.
Robert Howard is crying now
Please, kill yourself so you can tell him you are sorry for what you said
the uproar from the turkish would be deafening
based and savapilled
such an underrated band
>It's wrong to glorify something not even Howard really wanted.
Howard wanted to publish poems, but that paid like shit so he started sending in stories. Therefore true fans only read the poems in the beginning of Conan stories and ignore the stories
He obviously cared enough to write well crafted stories.
In this day and age? NOPE, not a chance
>i'm only gonna buy this book and read the poem at the start cuz i'm a real fan
That's wrong. He wanted to write poems and stories and he did. Not to mention it's an incredibly stupid straw man you've attempted here.
it would trigger all the non-binary transracial genderfluid libshit leftypol SJW LGBTPQ Feminazi special snowflakes into a Twitter frency.
Maybe after World War 3 when society is rebooted and we have killed off all these worthless subhumans.
>A few weeks ago The Head Hunter dropped which was Sword & Sorcery AND Horror kino.
looks pretty neat, thanks for the rec
I never actually watched the commercial but that's pretty ridiculous if true. Who the fuck thought this was a good idea?
Yea I really dig it. Director only had 30,000 dollars yet he made some slow-burn, minimalist Sword & Sorcery kino with a huge dollop of Horror thrown in.
tfw no Shadow Kingdom arc in a Kull the Conqueror show.
>the head hunter
Damn, how'd I miss this? Trailer looks kino, in an unironic way.
His mother was dying for a long time. Robert and his father were at the hospital when she finally died. Robert walked out, got into his car, and shot himself in the hospital parking lot. Must have been a rough day for dad Howard
That's late 70s/early 80s dark fantasy, not S&S. Think really early D&D. not Conan. S&S means barbarians fighting evil sorcerers from forgotten civilizations, late 70s/early 80s fantasy means long haired, unshaven fighters killing gap toothed brigands in Essex forests that have been adorned with dry ice smoke and plastic cowebs.
Just don't go in expecting wall-to-wall action because it's obvious the director couldn't afford that. It's a more cerebral film with a focus on grim atmosphere.
Anyone who is thinking about making a S&S movie should be reading this post.
>This pic
It's so ironic, if you've ever lived in a place with basketball americans, you'd know that they are the biggest offenders when it comes to catcalling and shit like that.
lol are you homosexual? S&S = tits and barbarians and cheap rubber monsters. Take it or leave it.
>He wanted to write poems and stories and he did.
That's wrong
>Not to mention it's an incredibly stupid straw man you've attempted here.
I'm sure it makes you feel incredibly stupid, since it exposes your shitty attempts to editorialize somebody else's work based on biographical information
>lol are you homosexual? S&S = tits and barbarians and cheap rubber monsters. Take it or leave it.
Anyone seen this TV show pilot that never got a series?
lol you fucking zoomer. S&S IS shallow, that's why it's great.
Biographical information states Howard only wrote those blatantly lurid Conan stories with half-naked or completely naked girls because he was desperate for money and knew Weird Tales would buy them without any problems. Howard himself DID NOT like writing those types of stories and only did so out of desperation.
>lol you fucking zoomer. S&S IS shallow, that's why it's great.
so is tolkien considered s&s?
Sorry, but it does not.
No. Lord of the Rings is high/epic fantasy.
so whats the difference?
>Young black warrior embarks on a shamanistic journey led by his ancestors overthrowing a powerful sect like religion that opresses the lands.
Easy, hollywood would eat this up.
I'm gonna watch the movie user. Sounds good. I just wanted to thank you for the advice since I often reccomended good stuff and I never knew if anons watched it or not
I watch Fire and Ice at least once a week.
See
Sword & Sorcery and Epic Fantasy are both under the same banner of Heroic Fantasy, but both, at their purest, have their own distinct characteristics. In fact it was a writer named Fritz Leiber who coined the term Sword & Sorcery because his fantasy works were being compared to Tolkien's and he didn't like that. He saw his fantasy as being "earthier" than Tolkien's and closer to the fantasy Howard (creator of Conan) originally write in the 30s so he came up with the term Sword & Sorcery to SPECIFICALLY separate that type of pulp fantasy from Lord of the Rings. I personally hate the label Sword & Sorcery because it's too goddamn broad; every one thinks if it's fantasy with swords and sorcery then it must be Sword & Sorcery which isn't true.
Just read Michael Moorcock and Andre Norton and imagine things in your head. Watch a few decent mainstream authors with budgets like Villeneuve, Nolan, Cameron and Miller once in several years. You know the modern American industry is heavily politicized shitfest, that can’t be trusted.
Ghost Love Score by Nightwish.
Conan was a swarthy fucker though
Dark skin =/= shitskin
Howard explicitly states Conan is white.
cope
i bet you think greeks and romanians are white
Why does sjw Hollywood never make African based fantasy adventures though? Like, you'd think that would be top of the list these days, right?
Conan was from Sumeria. Literally modern day Iraq.
You and I are soul brothers, user, I can feel it. I’ll never understand why anybody would want any IP they enjoy to be adapted by Hollywood right now.
I thought he is a Cimmerian
Cimmeria*
No former franchise to remake that fits?
It's not like they still write new stuff.
I think that sword and sorcery inspires more from classical antiquity and asian/african cultures, while high fantasy inspires from medieval europe
thanks
No, that's fucking retarded. They can't just take white stuff and paint it black. That's not creative at all.
But yeah that is more Hollywood's style.
No. He is supposed to come from today's Ireland
Whiter than you Tyrone
Manowar is the Motley Crue of power metal. Literal shit.
>They can't just take white stuff and paint it black.
Sauce?
It's not that, epic fantasy has much grander world building, like in terms of Tolkien coming up with languages and full scale history for his own Middle Earth. But then again, Tolkien still is in the league of his own with this at least in terms of scope and quality.
Anyone else really like stories where shits weird and silly like eight armed gorilla men on Mars fighting swashbuckling WW1 pilots who fuck green Martian slave women and stuff? I miss that kinda stuff.
This is not to say that S&S stories don't have it. Howard had a history for his own Hyperborean era as well, but it was brought forward in much smaller doses.
I think it's too little known to be picked up by hollywood.
Is it good?
This is perfect. So they'll probably ignore it and just make Conan black instead.
>I think it's too little known to be picked up by hollywood.
I guarantee Netflix would trip over themselves rushing to produce a series that's basically Black Conan if they ever got the itch to create such a series. And I haven't gotten around to reading the book yet, but from what I've read about it it's some of the better Sword & Sorcery from that era.
Eh I prefer to describe them as Sword & Sorcery being more Pagan and High/Epic fantasy being more Christian. The traditional white knight hero is something you'd typically find in Epic Fantasy whereas the protagonists in Sword & Sorcery are usually rogues who are only out for themselves like Conan (or hell even straight up villains like Wagner's Kane).
Maybe I should give it a try, I've been looking for stuff to read anyway.
But my hunch is that it's not going to happen because black conan written by a black man and faithfully recreated would be no headline at all.
Modern hollywood diversity just seems to be about the shitstorm potential as free promotion than anything else - that's at least how I feel about it atm.
Wouldn't we go from the 80s to the 90s instead of back in time?
These dudes look so angry.
Wasn't Gor that one BDSM/Slave fetish fantasy series that was the shit with erpging subbies back in the early 2000s?

Posted up as many Sword & Sorcery / fantasy films as I could find here, if anyone wants to burrow through some of these:
letterboxd.com
Although there a few I know I'm missing.
Well it might have a comeback... but with female barbarians and transsexual witches
That's a neat list and I hate to be THAT GUY, but....
I also know there are a number of heavy metal band vhs's from back in the day with a lot of fantasy imagery, that I want to list in there. I recall some of Dio's tours involving sword and sorcery imagery.
Yeah, I started just throwing Sword & Sorcery in there and then said fuck it and threw High Fantasy, Sword & Sandal, old Epics, and some historical Medieval stuff too. I'm already thinking up a different title for the list.
Need to add The Head Hunter and The Last Scythian then.
But that said, there are a lot of really rare Sword & Sorcery titles I put in there I usually don't see on the lists people make.
Thanks, added. I know there are some Slav fantasy movies too I'm forgetting the titles of.
Yeah, Flash Gordon and John Carter are two of my favorite movies, and I even like Sky Captain. Star Wars should be like this, it's when it moves away from its pulp roots that Star Wars starts to suck.
I like that you included Mandy though. I'll fight anyone to death who tries to argue Mandy ISN'T a Sword & Sorcery film. Hell it's basically the same damn story as Conan the Barbarian.
If you got the money you should buy the ebook from Amazon by Howie Bentley called Under a Dim Blue Sun. Just read the synopsis for it. It's crazy pulp goodness.
I agree, it's absolutely a Sword and Sorcery movie. Kind of a meta-S&S movie, like there's a layer taking place in a heavy metal-laden 80s, and then there's a layer of the fantasy mythos that exists within the music and books these characters live in, which kind of comes alive and envelops reality as tragedy befalls them and Red loses his mind / descends into a bad, vengeful trip. At the end of the movie, he's literally driving off into some hellish fantasy-scape.
You need The 13th Warrior. Also
>Dead of Knight
Hearty kek. I love this movie.
>Hell it's basically the same damn story as Conan the Barbarian.
Yeah. Red essentially goes on the same kind of vengeance-fueled journey Conan embarks on after losing his love. And the cult leader is more-or-less an evil wizard. And the bikers are basically demonoid orc types, or like those generic beast men Conan sometimes fights.
Cool, added.
Posting kino magick soundtracks(more sci fi magick than sword, but it's still the best doom album ever)
Should also add Ironclad.
Btw, don't want to derail this cool thread but seems like there's some other anons that like to dig deeper. Been working on a few other lists, the concepts should make enough sense, any recommendations?:
>a list of movies typifying that specific late 90s, pre-911 moment with like Ryan Phillipe, Rose McGowan, etc
letterboxd.com
>a list of what I'm calling 'edgecore' - edgy late 90s blade / trenchcoat aesthetic, grimdark, ect:
letterboxd.com
>movies that supplied material for big memes:

Or other lists here:

Cool, yeah I don't think I've delved enough into much fantasy since late 00s.
The Red Sonja movie could feature some cool fantasy stuff, but the director is a gay man......a gay man directing a Red Sonja movie just feels wrong. He's gay.
have they said anything about the casting yet?
Why would someone like Conan care about a skank like that?
>..a gay man directing a Red Sonja movie just feels wrong. He's gay.
Depends, that could mean he can sexualize her while being inmune to sjw criticism
They need someone who connects to the mythic image and respects the honor of men to make a Howard movie. The joy and adventure of pulp follows after if you follow this one minded course. Conan is wise but not confused or troubled like most heroes of today; his sword and his strength are the answers to most problem and his mind is likewise sharp as steel.
Also,
A list of that particular aesthetic niche in 80s horror featuring the awesome practical effects of the time, often slimey, mutant, neon, etc:

What I'm calling 'Dream Horror' - Freddy, The Gate, etc:

Movies with a 'shroomy' aesthetic - that particular kind of weird fairy morphology aeshthetic:

Movies featuring a city-at-night / city lights or corporate aesthetic:

>we'll fix it in post
you say that everytime and everytime it's a lie
Anyways, sorry to spam these, just thought some of you might be interested or have a couple recommendations, but I again, I don't want to derail the thread.
Which board would Robert E. Howard frequent?
>instead we get mutts everywhere with zero attractive women
This perfectly applies to MK11, too. Shame that.
Would love to see something similar to Dark Sun
/int/
Yeah Dark Sun was a cool idea. And a particular kind of 90s fantasy aesthetic, related to that sort of 'tribal' thing at the time.
I also always just liked the name Forgotten Realms, seemed like a really cool concept, and all the Underdark stuff was cool, although I'm kind of disappointed that it mostly just involved typical Tolkien ripoff high fantasy. Should have gotten more exotic and far-out and dark.
Do people still play Dark Sun? I hadn't heard about it in years.
>fanatical physical training
>nearly six feet tall
>nearly
Jokes do write themselves.
It really depends on what he thinks his target audience is.
>Morph Horror
Brain Damage (1988)
>Dream Horror
Brain Dead (1990)
>Shroomy
Dead Man (1995)
>Night Cities
The Laundry Man
Black Coal, Thin Ice
I don't think people still play the actual setting in tabletop, but Dark Sun:Shattered Lands is a timeless great game
Great recommendations - added.
In 1986 i wrote a script outline based on Judas Priest record covers. All the metal greats of that age had a part
Let it thus be known to all who now gather by the hearth and fire for the telling of this tale. That it takes place in an age long past. Long before the men of our years sought to put down their thoughts in written form. In a reign so far removed that today it exist only within our dreams. A tale of joy and great sorrow. A tale of dark treachery, and of new found faith. Like the distant recollection of our childhood I recall this time. When that which we now dare to call legend walked the earth in mortal form. We the race of man were still young and full of promise, and hope, and fear. Before Clan became tribe, tribe became nation and we rose to displace all that was before, and call it our own.
In a time when Magic was power...
And Dragons were real...
In the age of Heavy Metal
Would watch, desu
The panties on the face aesthetic
When ever i find this at the thrift store i put it in a stack between things i don't really want so the girl at the check out only count spines and dont look at the cover
Yes
>The Gor novels have been criticized for their focus on relationships between dominant men and submissive women, the latter often in positions of slavery. The Encyclopedia of Fantasy has stated that the first several books are "passable exercises" of Edgar Rice Burroughs style fiction while "later volumes degenerate into extremely sexist, sadomasochistic pornography involving the ritual humiliation of women, and as a result have caused widespread offence". Science fiction/fantasy author Michael Moorcock has suggested that the Gor novels should be placed on the top shelves of bookstores, saying, "I’m not for censorship but I am for strategies which marginalize stuff that works to objectify women and suggests women enjoy being beaten."
It should be required reading in High School.
You say "next GoT" like thats a good thing
As the Evil Lord Halfax (played by Rob Halford) was in a relationship with his daughter Kyna (Played by Stevie Nicks) i predated Game of Thrones incest and set up the exact dynamic from the Conan 2012
I'd love an adaptation of the Lone Wolf series
Very classical and realistic, like GOT but without all the Narnia shit.
IMHO Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon doesn't get enough credit for being one of the best fantasy epics. Wuxia is practically Sword & Sorcery.
There's a whole area of strange fantasy kung fu movies with Raiden-looking guys and flying witches with glowing eyes.
Big Trouble in Little China delves into that zone a bit. Cool stuff.
isn't stevie nicks about as old as rob?
I've seen a few Shaw Brothers wuxia movies, the best and craziest was probably Bastard Swordsman or Web of Death. I want to get into it more, I wonder if John Carpenter ever said what movies inspired BTLC.
Can this be considered Sword and Sorcery? It was quite kino and the wizards were actually powerful.
Yeah I think that qualifies.
This is a revival period. A book that is a sort of call back to those can have a chance.
Just look at the thread and never give up user!
>marlel writing conan comics in USA because rights
>based euros laws say fuck it, and anyone can adapt earlier conan stories
my favorite is Chinese Ghost Story
>film practically starts off with a head rolling
>cute ghost girl
>cool warrior monk throwing fireballs
>weird tranny-granny tree demon with tentacles
>final showdown in HELL
>doomed romance
I can't believe how unbelievably dry, boring and soulless the remake was.
What the fuck how did I not hear about this. Well that's my day ruined.
Where this image is from
Damn. Rest in peace.
star wars is basically sword and sorcery
>franchise for gays and tumblrinas
yeah, no thanks
the whole kungfu demon hunter thing is pretty good
there isnt enough action horror
BERSERK LIVE ACTION
Cast him
If you remove the naked woman then.there is a chance
It's always sad the boy wants to molest the ghost girl with a Vienna Sausage
Live action Dark Souls
wtf she looks like an alien
When Got has a shit ending and people Rees online about it no, it will kill it before it had its day.
Implessive movies.
Go for it user. If you fail you fail but atleast you have a since of accomplishment for trying. Plus what the other user said is true. This is your chance to right whatever you want. We are between two eras and that’s the perfect time to establish yourself because the new rules haven’t been established if that makes sense.
Mandy was pretty good as a modern version of it.
Based Gor bros. God I love old pulpy sci-fi and fantasy novels. Gor is so much fun and I love how ass-blasted it leaves politically correct types.
That's a cover for a newer edition. Here's an older cover.
I did give a fuck about him just didn't hear that many people talk about him being dead which is sad since the guy wrote many great books and is underrated I'm just hoping his stuff will get remembered as the years go on that's all
Is Mad Max essentialy S&S?
