It's about a guy who meets various girls with supernatural problems and helps them out. Since all those girls are cute anime archetypes (sometimes with a twist) waifufaggotry abounds. The story itself is mostly supernatural detective work, trying to figure out the exact nature of each problem and then applying the appropriate solution.

Visually stunning and very good characters but half of the story arcs are very bland and/or rehashes of earlier story arcs. The stuff with Nadeko, Kaiji, and Senjogahara was the best. Typical for an anime with supernatural themes, the most human characters tend to be the best or at least the most interesting. All the girls are pretty good though, and the bland parts are still better than any shonenshit just from visuals alone.

It's not that monogatari is pretentious. It just has the shaft stylization. All of shaft's anime have this quirky "slide show but good animation when it matters" style. And it's adapted from a series of novels so they're probably trying to adapt the language of the books without watering it down to typical anime levels.

Cute girls, interesting plots that you don't see in typical western shows. Can do more for less money because it's all animated. The older stuff ages well unlike old TV shows with crappy cheap CGI. So long as you don't believe everything, it can teach you a little bit about Jap culture (depending on the show, again, don't just believe it because it's in anime).
