Would anyone know if there is a difference in picture quality between the 2003 DS9 dvd box set, and the new 2017 reissue?

Just bought DS9 the complete series, and noticed that the picture is VERY pixelated. It looks heavily compressed, yet every trek website says that there is no difference between the 2003 box set the 2017 version. They go on to say that even the menus, and extra content are the same. A while back I borrowed a few of the original 2003 discs, and I don't recall the show looking so pixelated.

I understand. I just remember the 2003 discs that I borrowed, and watched on the same tv screen looking decent, vs what I got in the mail a few days ago. There's so much pixelation in some scenes that it takes me out of the show. It almost looks like a compressed bootleg copy of the original.

Anyways here's a heads up to anyone who's thinking of buying this set. They stopped putting the 2017 discs in actual plastic clamshell boxes like the ones shown in this image. They are now using actual strips of tape to hold the plastic dvd pages together, and than gluing them to a cardboard slipcover. So basically a new flimsy cardboard slip cover has replaced the hard plastic clamshell boxes.

The one thing that the anime industry ever did right was realizing that fans of a niche market product will pay good money for a high quality product. instead of charging $80.00 for this stupid shit I would gladly pay $120-$160 for actual quality cases and something that looks good on a shelf.

I don't think those kinds of starbases are easy to build or cheap to maintain.
Earth Spacedock is basically a medium sized city in space.
It is like 5km (3miles) long and is every type of space station rolled into one.
In functions as a shipyard and can repair, upgrade and do maintenance on a small fleet while also having labs, hospitals, diplomatic rooms and quarters for every species in the Federation.
There is manufacturing, trading, commerce and I'm pretty sure it is the main hub for the subspace relay network.
And it probably does a other stuff too.
It has to be the toughest and most well armed starbase outside of some very specific military installations.

These kinds of starbases don't just protect a single planet; they spread Federation influence across an entire sector of space.

Sounds like the kind of thing a stable wormhole to another quadrant would warrant.

The materials costs are zero, the power costs are ??? and the manpower costs are questionable/unsustainable.

There's zero benefit to some starfleet station either, they're not massive defensive fortifications. That's what the actual fleet is for and they can't spare 1 ship. Hell, they can't afford a full federation crew.

They make some claims about ship fabrication throughout the series' that make the time spent on it seem negligible. They're definitely capable of mass producing ships and things but the scale of starfleet academy seems like it would be the primary limiting factor.
