You think Zapan and Grewishka were poorly acted? Hugo was kind of flat at first but his confession in the church was well-done and so was the scene where Alita wakes him up in his apartment, Johnson infused the scene with a lot of subtle tension as Hugo was torn between wanting to be with Alita and his dream of Zalem and not wanting her to know the crimes he was committing to make it happen.
The plot is a hero's journey, but a very unique twist on it combining elements of Pinocchio, Gnosticism, Christianity, cyberpunk, Dickensian exaggerated characters and dystopian sci-fi. What other films would you say are substantially similar? I'll grant that a hero with amnesia is a common plot device, but it's done very well here and it ties in perfectly with the overall themes of the story.
The CGI feels intangible and weightless? Are you trolling? The motorball sequences have some of the most believable CGI physics I've ever seen, way better than Marvel movies where nothing appears to have any inertia. I remember a scene of Thor flying through the air, lifting his apparently weightless hammer, and bringing it down to create a shockwave in the middle of a group of mooks who lift off the ground as though something was pulling them instead of tumbling like they were hit with a wave of force. Alita is night and day compared to that.

Chiren is a great example of Dickensian characterization in a modern story and how it can work well. Her outfit in each scene conveys an extremely blunt, on-the-nose metaphor and on the surface there's nothing subtle about her at all but there are hidden depths beneath the blatant messages conveyed by her appearance.
She goes through a progression of costumes in the film just like Alita does and she can be seen as a kind of corrupted counterpart to Alita. Whereas Alita struggles to -become-, Chiren struggles to -be seen as-. Alita wants the strength to choose her own path, whereas Chiren hopes the Zalemites choose to let her back in.
Dickens used extremely blunt, unsubtle characters like Ebenezer Scrooge and Ms. Havisham to tell complex, layered stories and Chiren is a modern take on that style, one of the only ones I can think of in contemporary film.

If we go by the manga's timeline, Alita's brain age is definitely under 20 by the time she's found by Ido. Which is not to say about much maturity because in her past life she was a terrorist/living weapon (I don't recall exactly) and war has this tendency to turn children into adults pretty quick.
The films differs in that Alita's teenage love for Hugo seems slightly more adult towards the end, and he also looks older than his manga counterpart. In the end it doesn't really matter and her "age" is never stated for good reason, while her mental maturation is apparent throughout the first chapter, from teenage to firmly young adult.

How has Lucasfilm caved to fans? Their basic mentality hasn't changed at all, Disney has just realized that they horribly mismanaged the franchise and now they're taking some basic steps to try and salvage the merchandise arm of Star Wars where the real money is... far too late.
They're still hostile to the core fanbase and intent on changing Star Wars from a boys' franchise to a girls' franchise despite the fact that most girls aren't interested in watching spaceships shoot lasers at each other. EpIX is dredging up more stuff from the OT because copying is all JJ knows how to do.
Afaik Jim doesn't own any part of Avatar, it was all Fox's, so now Disney owns it. They're within their rights to terminate Cameron and install the Russos or Rian Johnson as director if they want to. They wouldn't go that far but they really don't like creators who have enough prestige to not be sockpuppets. Jim probably has some contractual protections but Disney's lawyers of all people could find a way to pull some fuckery with Avatar.

It's too late to pivot the movies back to the core fans, but they're definitely doing that with the TV shows (The Mandalorean and Clone Wars). The movie audience they have left are basically Reylo and casual audiences; they even had a shipping panel at Celebration. But you can see that the cast hates Reylo with a passion - especially since the hardcore Reylos started targeting Adam Driver's wife and child.

Fox only owns the distribution rights to Alita: Battle Angel. They have zero rights to make sequels. Boatman owns those at least for a time; these types of deals typically revert to the original creator (Kishiro) after a number of years
