Originally Scott said behind the scenes that the xeno was dying, thus it was all slow and lethargic. He meant for the thing to only live a day like short-livied insects, it had attempted on creating it's eggs to carry it's legacy with Dallas and Brett in it's nest (from the deleted egg-morph scene).
The xeno was planned to just attempt to make as many eggs as it could before it died. It only killed Parker as he got in it's way and Lambert was killed as her body was too large for the vent the paniced xeno tried to pull her up through. Otherwise she'd get egg-morphed too.
