That line delivery made me laugh out loud in a good way when I first heard it in cinemas. Also that's what I meant about the vertical entrance. It's genuinely inhuman and is a good counterpoint to Ido's groundhugging ways. If Ido's hiding while waiting from Romo would have been entirely negated by access to that third dimension. We even see with Alita watching over the corner from the top. Cyborgs have a unique point of view compared to the humans in the film. Hugo's desire to watch from above foreshadows his eventual transformation in to a cyborg. You can contrast it with Vector, whose view is stable, rather than stepping over the vertical edge in to the overhanging Y-axis.

I'm obsessed with the film being in proper black and white now. I think it ends up looking so good because the film actually took time to get lighting correct. Something like Civil War would look like shit in black and white, but when there's proper shadows, light sources, and depth, black and white can really compliment the image. That's why Fury Road looks good with it. And Rodriguez knows how to shoot without color, i.e. Sin City.

I don't really have the time since I'm about to leave for work, but suffice it to say that the rest of the movie feels like a 3-5/10 Rodriguez movie ala spy kids, Machete, and Planet Terror and not his better 7-8/10s like Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Desperado, From Dusk Till Dawn, or Sin City. However the Alita character while she doesn't elevate the stuff around her or hold it up as a pillar she shines through as a beacon. It feels akin to the Rock in all his B-grade crap he stars in, the movie he's in is still trash but the Rock's charisma shines through it. I felt that with Alita, I'd watch Alita movies even if they were crap because Alita was in them like I did with Skyscraper, Rampage, Hercules and all that other B-Grade crap he keeps starring in.
I would say the same about Bruce Lee as well. I like Alita the character as portrayed by Rosa on that level.

The plot is formulaic and predictable. The writing is poor, the acting is subpar for anyone but Alita herself, Mahershala Ali, Waltz and Connelly at times. The cgi is pretty most of the time, but seldom engaging and it feels intangible. The characters and most of the environments feel weightless. The story's structure is not fitting for a stand-alone film, but could work well in a trilogy, as that's obviously what they're planning.

Well it is definitely relying on the sequel being made, and I feel like the 2nd movie would be more easier to create given that the world and characters are well established. Allowing Robert and Jim more freedom to create a "Better movie" as you say.

You think Zapan and Grewishka were poorly acted? Hugo was kind of flat at first but his confession in the church was well-done and so was the scene where Alita wakes him up in his apartment, Johnson infused the scene with a lot of subtle tension as Hugo was torn between wanting to be with Alita and his dream of Zalem and the crimes he was committing to make it happen.
The plot is a hero's journey, but a very unique twist on it combining elements of Pinocchio, Gnosticism, Christianity, cyberpunk, Dickensian exaggerated characters and dystopian sci-fi. What other films would you say are substantially similar? I'll grant that a hero with amnesia is a common plot device, but it's done very well here and it ties in perfectly with the overall themes of the story.
The CGI feels intangible and weightless? Are you trolling? The motorball sequences have some of the most believable CGI physics I've ever seen, way better than Marvel movies where nothing appears to have any inertia. I remember a scene of Thor flying through the air, lifting his apparently weightless hammer, and bringing it down to create a shockwave in the middle of a group of mooks who lift off the ground as though something was pulling them instead of tumbling like they were hit with a wave of force. Alita is night and day compared to that.
