Just to add to this: It's been a while since I saw it (when it was released), but I think had he played it straight and just alluded to the more psychological effects/horror of the game it would've been better. Maybe show some more explicit things in the final episode if he had to.
As it is, it was sort of unnerving watching him play the game off-screen in that warehouse at first, and I just wish he had employed better use of the background/reflections/blank space and made everything more subtle (inb4 >James >Subtle). The tone just seemed wrong for what he was going for and it just became another "Mr Bucket/Dream Phone" thing (though I do like their campiness).
