Why are people still confused about box office? The break even point was between 400-450 million, depending on how much it makes in certain markets. Studios get 55% from NA, 25% from China and somewhere around 40% for the rest of the world. Given this formula, Fox earned about 150m, give or take, so they're probably a few million short of breaking even with production budget. They also probably spent 50-80 million in marketing, but they should make that back with home video and streaming sales, and make a profit from merchandise. It's not exactly a success story but it's not a flop either. Fox is mainly to blame for insufficient and incompetent marketing. Movie got 60% approval from critics and 80-90% approval from audience, with proper marketing it would have made at least twice as much as it did.

Studios, industry insiders. Only way to earn more there is by co-producing a movie with China. I think whoever said that (would like to see actual source) meant that in regards to domestic box office. NA studio cut is 50-55%. 50% of 350 is 175. That's the only thing that makes sense because otherwise math just doesn't add up. It would need to make at least 300 million in NA for 350 to be break even point.

That's the point. If the production budget was 170m as reported then 350 break even mark only makes sense if most of that 350m comes from NA. How is that so hard for some people to figure out? We've been over this hundreds of times. You can do the math yourself. Studio cut in NA is 55%, China 25% and rest of the world rounds up to about 40% (higher in first world countries, less in 3rd world shitholes). Now figure out how much it would need to make in these territories for 350m mark to make sense.

Calculated it roughly and got around 155,000,000 intake based on those percentages, that's if the cuts are even that harsh. It would have to make another 30 million in the US to hit the break point.
Thing is, if they threw that 350 number out there, maybe the budget was tied in to the Avatar sequels or something, so who knows. It's speculation at this point until a crew member says something.

350m break even point doesn't make much sense on 170m production budget, but maybe whoever made that remark (I heard it was Landau? Someone actually got a source?) was optimistic and was hoping it would make its production budget back in NA alone and the marketing expenses from the rest of the world. Because no matter how small you believe its marketing budget was, it would need to make much more than 350m to make back all the money spent on production and marketing.

True, I was just curious if anyone here is busy celebrating the holiday. If anything, now is the perfect time to discuss all the religious undertones of the film, cause the entire story is pretty much one big retelling, and the themes of sacrifice and redemption are so prevalent.
The decayed church is to show Iron City's lost hope and turn to sin and corruption. Fitting that Hugo's secret place is here, and that's where he gets his redemption, is inside, and fallen. Also, when he says "God, I'm sorry," he's looking up past Alita, like he's begging for forgiveness.

To continue the church being in ruins, it's like the only building in town that is in such disarray. All other buildings, albeit crummy, at least are functional and in one piece. The church's roof is missing, the doors barely work, and vegetation is all over it. What's the use of church if praying for something better isn't going to bring happiness and only death is brought in Iron City? That's why the tokens and currency in the city use such superficial materials like motorball, because the city has no culture anymore, there aren't values. It's a free for all and everyone has succumbed to work for Zalem, a place you can't get to. But for some people, Zalem is the new heaven, because it seems like the only escape out of such a underbelly of crime and self destruction.

This is where Alita comes in. All the citizens have subjected or accepted this is their life, just going through the motions until maybe one day you get killed by some jackers looking to you for parts, or just because they can. But Alita is a fallen angel from the heavens. She has no knowledge of what Iron City is like, so she enters her new life and her surroundings with such blind acceptance and love, it transforms those around her. She becomes an indirect savior figure and healer for those who desperately need salvation. They don't know it, she doesn't know it, but she's her to fix them. She has come to reap the sinners and save those who have turned to sin, but are still able to be redeemed. There's a lot of visual symbolism of falling down, like when Alita enters the underworld, which may as well be hell.

A lot of his movies use church imagery, and the opening of Once Upon A Time In Mexico, the credits end on a church.
Every fucking scene is chock full of shit like this. Hugo is rushing to his secret place, again the church, but is stopped by Zapan, literally his past sins coming back to haunt him. That was what that whole chase was about. And he dies right outside the church, and the one who brings him inside is Alita, where she basically forgives him and what he's done, to which he is given a second chance, both with help by Chiren's now transformed nature and Alita's devotion to saving those she loves. But Hugo's second chance is short lived, and he rushes for the heaven he seeked, both by force and choice. He didn't have to leave Alita behind, he could've escaped the city. In order to get to the tubes that go up to Zalem, that's right on city limits, but he chose to go up. He reaffirms this to Alita by saying they belong up there, to which she has to remind him that's not what's important, it's being together. But he ends up back where he belongs, on the ground, because he waited too long and his heart wasn't fully healed. It was fate he end up back where he started, but in death. He got close, he was nearly saved, but the corruption was too far.
Oh exactly, it's false hope. It's just selling something to suckers who are desperate to leave. Which admittedly mirrors some religious cultures.

It's kind of fitting Alita falls for the very epitome of what Iron City does to people, a man who has been torn apart by the city's corrupted ideals. She teaches those she meets, but importantly learns from them too. Her kindness changes Hugo, Chiren, Ido, but she learns individual lessons from different people, based on what loss and torment they've had differently. Ido being suicidal as a hunter warrior to kill those demons he feels he created, Hugo basically turning to that crime and jacking up people, and Chiren for aiding in similar actions. Each person has something different to offer Alita, through a moral lesson. But with Hugo, falling in love with him, it's a tragedy waiting to happen, but that's the beauty of it and what you can learn from it.

Alright user since you're here for a chat I want to put something out there. Was is just me who noticed the really detailed use of verticality by the cyborgs in the film to highlight their strength and potential inhumanity? Like think about Romo's entrance, where he slides down the wall in a way no regular human would. Or indeed, Grewishka's entrances and exists of scenes through scaling buildings or hopping down holes? It's especially clear when Ido and Hugo have to climb down to meet Alita and Grew in round two of their fight. Some really nice 'show don't tell' film making with us being able to see how far beyond human even the average cyborg is.

Right, and that's why it becomes a topic of discussion for Hugo when he sees Alita is a full blown cyborg. They're special in terms of what they can do. He tells her if he was as strong as her, he'd climb the tube to get to Zalem right now. Cyborgs, even shitty ones, are better off than the average human. This is apparent in Hugo's lack of participation in the Kansas bar fight, because he's just a meatboy, he can't take on any of the obviously superior cyborg hunter warriors, which why he says she's with the tough badass Alita to the guy's face when he stands up, because he has to rely on her strength. Lot of good visual storytelling, even in this flexing scene, to show off what a robot can do, especially a fucking berserker.

Also, there's some subtle set up and payoff in regards to Alita's strength. Hugo notes her strong force as a cyborg in the beginning, when she's just in the doll body. Then there's the shot of her running along the rooftops, and in the conversation right after that scene, Hugo again asks, "So you're stronger than you were?" to Alita responds, "Yeah, and faster too!" Which actually sets up how she's able to catch up to Hugo on the tube, because she's stronger and faster.

Here's another great part of that detail. The only cyborg of note we see never use vertical movement in the film at ALL is Zapan. I think it highlights his arrogance really well. Essentially he doesn't NEED the advantage because he already believes himself to be superior to all of his marks. That's why Alita surprises him so much when she kicks the shit out of him. He's never been challenged like that before as far as we know, so he then needs to turn to subterfuge and underhanded tactics to harm her.

Yeah it's interesting how the doll body Alita is fundamentally on par with the other cyborgs thanks to her Panzer Kunst but then the berserker is just a whole other level of powerful. All the mistakes she makes both in the Motorball game and then subsequent fight with Zapan have nothing to do with her physical might, but rather her indecisiveness and emotional anguish. I've said it before but it's genuinely a superman story done right. They question isn't whether you can win, the question is how you can keep everyone you care about safe while balancing your own needs and desires as an independent agent.
The body you have isn't good or bad. That part is up to you.
