None of these movies prompted by an interest in Picnic at Hanging Rock are going to be simple plots that get to the point, they're going to be deliriously beautiful and/or harrowing fever dreams. I thought Wake in Fright was brilliant. Especially for more what it imparts between the lines, a kind of weird menace and sense of foreboding.

Any magic they might have is killed dead by the fact that all such films can only be bankrolled if they focus on white Aussies, and white Aussies are a mashup of every criminal/regressive/low-time-preference gene in the book. They're puritanical, anti-intellectual, religiously bigoted, and I just can't believe they have a sense of the numinous that's distinct from a lager drinker's migraine. Wake in Fright isn't a waste of time because its plot doesn't go anyway, it's a waste of time because it reflects such a weakling's idea of what depravity is. But they're sooo boring, total non-entities and not even in a compelling way... homestly I see no actual benefit in people becoming like that other than relative predictability and a numb sense of tepid safety.
