My experience with it was a friend's wife was out of town so he, another friend and I decided to have a ridiculous no girls allowed party and watch this movie and get really really high and drunk while watching this. Pretty degenerate but we had a good time.

Basically don't watch this sober but do watch it ironically making fun of the "wife's out of town, bro time" meme.

It's actually good. If you like the original, it's just as badass, but different. Less brutal than the Spartan movie, because Athenians were boy lovers, but it's varied and well made, plus acting is surprisingly convincing. Has some kino moments like how Eva dies.

I’m not saying they weren’t, but Sparta was even more so. They were expected to form a lifetime relationship with another warrior as a way to strengthen their bonds in their phalanxes. Their lovers even helped them select their wives, but the real love was each other.

Much as I enjoyed 300, that joke of calling Athenians boy lovers was really out of place because Sparta most definitely did it too. Perhaps it was just Miller poorly translating cultural ideas of machismo.

/his/torian and I FUCKING HATED IT. They tried to force a underdog story way too fucking hard to make it similar to the first. At least with Thermopylae you can say the Spartans were outnumbered but the Athenian Empire was a rising naval power. They didn't have dingy boats without a sail they had one of the largest fleets of Trimere among all the Greek City-States. It was because they were a major player, and they had some clever tactics that they defeated the Persians. They didn't need to be bailed out by Spartans and everyone else.

This should have been a movie about a invincible major power meeting the force of a rising power and getting their asses kicked. Instead they ripped up the history textbooks, wiped their ass with it, and came up with this piece of trash all because they wanted to repeat the success of 300 right down to the fucking last stand, underdog story.

Imagine if they made a movie about the Battle of Midway some bullshit about how the US was a underdog and USS Lexington was reduced to a speedboat. That's what they did. Fuck them.

Okay my bad. But at least in the sequel comic they acknowledged that Spartans were still the real bad asses and that the Athenians weren't their equals in combat. I mean the first movie played Spartans up as the ultimate ass kicking warriors descended from hercules himself, you can't then just have another movie where this other group is just as good for no reason.

Much like the Sin City sequel, it was a decade too late. When both films came out, their FX technology and visual style were new and unique. Now they struggle to find an audience even on direct to DVD.

It doesn't help that both films look significantly cheaper and shittier. And the direction in the 300 sequel is terrible, fucking handicams and shit. Snyder isn't a visionary but at least he can properly frame a shot.

This is a comic book movie we're talking about, it's full of archetypes, and complexity doesn't come from complexity of character, it's rather an exploration of heroism and other particular idealised qualities, vengeance is another worth mentioning here. Rise of an Empire is 300 from a different perspective, it's the same movie about different people with different ideas, and things you like 300 for are there. Plus best titties in Hollywood.

First one is a classic, one of the best movies based off a comic. The sequel was a mess with even worse CGI even tho it came out almost a decade later and had a higher budget.
