So what, that's it? They tied up everything nicely to try and control the damage they did to the continuity of the series. What could the 3rd season possibly be about? Exploring the far future from a ship in ruins?

>Exploring the far future
That's kind of stupid for a show already set in the far future.

They went far in the future, past all the star trek series.

And that's dumb, the writers were already starting to hit a wall with the TNG era series as they went on which is why ST:Enterprise was produced as a prequel.

Shit sounds gayer every time I hear about it tbdesu

How come DS9 was able to preserve the aesthetic and designs of TOS but STD can’t?

cause it was an actual Trek show and not a clearly different IP changed into Trek so CBS can keep the rights.

So after watching this, I was thinking about watching the previous shows, but there's 79 episodes TOS, 178 of TNG, 176 of DS9, 172 of Voyager and 98 episodes of Enterprise. So that's over 700 episodes. Fuck that shit, I'll just watch STD, I'm not a nerd

I bet in the third season they forget they even have the sphere data.

But almost half of them are decent

This might be cool, I hope they introduce some wild shit, like massive holograms, bigger than galaxies, of people talking to each other, and massive giant beings that are so tall they walk on the universe, their feet touch the universe's floor

Bingo

50% is better than 0%

Don't give them ideas.

I want to feel the actual size of the universe, I want to feel overwhelmed, that lovecraftian sense of dread. I want 14 episodes of this scene

>Can I get a rundown of Season 2? Thanks.

Section 31 created a Skynet scenario. An ancient dying being downloaded it's eons of knowledge into the Discovery's main computer, and S31 Skynet obtained that information becoming sentient and near omnipotent.

The data merged with the Discovery to the point where it gained enough control of the ship to ensure that it could not be scuttled, nor could it just be allowed to be destroyed through inaction. So to avert the extinction event, they send the Discovery forward through time to the 31st century.

Side effects of this are that the entire incident is highly classified, performing continuity cleanup because it explains why nobody in series after this ever talk about the Discovery and it's actions, it's unique advanced technology, or any of it's crew. Also Section 31 is heavily purged and it's assets decimated, with it's new commander intending to reform it, which ends it's period of acting openly and sends it into the shadows the way it's later seen.

ok

That does nothing to explain the continuity or aesthetic differences already seen during the show though.

I do. Sorry that you don't, but it's your attitude that gives them the temerity to fuck with Star Trek the way they do.

They went to the 33rd century i think

all the time travel shit and people being cloned makes it seem possible. i think a grim story like that would have to be in a separate star trek show though - like a comedy spinoff, except it's sad instead of funny.

Wrong.

What aesthetic differences and what continuity? Everything looks the same except realistic.

I agree with that. TNG characters acted too nonchalantly most of the time and everything felt really archaically stiff. Sometimes it worked, most of the time it didn't. It's my favorite but not perfect.

Very well. You can go.

>Empress kills "Leland"

Leland wasn't Control, he was merely a physical manifestation of it (literally the same as when Control made some holograms), Control is the AI aboard the ships.
Why would that thing dying kill control

As long as you autistically force yourself to watch it all, I'm happy.

That's spelling, not grammar.

You exaggerate and it makes you look a tit.

Pretending to be retarded now will not redeem the actual retardation you demonstrated earlier.

You have no idea what you are talking about. Porn parody wouldn't spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to build the sets.

Neither STD nor JJ Treks are canon, they are an alternate universe, made on a license demanding differences not to threaten revenue from original Treks merchandise. They can use characters and events from original series, but they have to look different. They'll do exactly the same thing with Picard show. The series is already in trouble because manufacturers do not want to make merchandise which won't sell.

Marketing is a conspiracy?

>writing "An ancient dying being downloaded it has eons of knowledge into the Discovery's main computer" instead of "An ancient dying being downloaded its eons of knowledge into the Discovery's main computer"
Grammar.

how the fuck will the picard show look "futuristic" enough for the 24th century if STD already looks hundreds of years removed from both the TOS and TNG era aesthetics

its all the big corporations, maaaan

TNG had a G-Rod mandate to not act like living humans. DS9 struck gold on their casting. ENT was comfy but great actors they were not

and they've proven, beyond all doubt, that it won't matter, as the quality of the writing pool is such that it could find a way to make anything bad.

this.
You tell him, user!

how do midnight's edge subscribers remember to breathe

Corporate entities don't seek to exert control over how they and their products are perceived?

They don't even have a pool, STD hasn't kept anyone long enough for that to exist. They punch in for their resume checkbox and then fuck off. There's no reason new productions will follow that model though.

Because there weren't any. Old Trek provided explanations for differences between incarnations.

Wrong. It's the same as writing "ancient beings downloading there knowledge. . . "
Clearly a spelling error.

Canon is fucked

>It's the same as writing "ancient beings downloading there knowledge. . . "
"there" isn't a contraction. Not equivalent. You're dismissed.

>TNG had a G-Rod mandate to not act like living humans
Yep. Kind of sucks that TNG started going up in quality once he got sick and started dying.

>The Dubsminion no longer endures in /trek/
img_sad_weyoun

>Kind of sucks that TNG started going up in quality once he got sick and started dying.

>first two seasons
>awkward, stiff characters
>crazy space exploration, aliens and phenomenon

>last five seasons
>more human, relaxed characters
>less space exploration and more ferrying diplomats and relationship drama

>"there" isn't a contraction
Irrelevant. The error was not in the misuse of a contraction, but in the misspelling of the intended word by happening to use a homonym that is a contraction.
Schooled.

youtube.com/watch?v=ufAzwreFLAA

forget it

>Irrelevant
Wrong. Your comparison doesn't correspond with the actual topic of discussion. It was a pathetic attempt, D- for effort.

Inceloid post right here.

The late season TNG grey political stuff is what people try and blame on DS9, too. That's the best of trek. The crazy aliens are also great but without humanity to compare to they had no punch.

Attached: angry_crystalline_noises.webm (480x360, 605K)

d- is still a pass

How the fuck does duet have no importance to the overall plot? It’s the start of Kira’s acceptance that their were two sides to the bajoran cardassian conflict

why is there always grammar cuntery in /trek/?

Maybe at school for the handicapped.

ENT was made to undo 40 years of plotholes, dipshit.

If you look closely at the sets and props, you notice a bunch of physical buttons and switches around the "futuristic" touchscreens. The shuttles even have rows of gauges and switches. Compare that to the pure touchscreens and sleek surfaces of the TNG era.
Basically if they remade the Enterprise-D sets with reflective surfaces, cinematic lighting and modern editing techniques, it'd look noticeably more futuristic than STD. A lot of what makes STD look so futuristic is just modern set production and lighting techniques. It would oldschool as hell otherwise, even with the fancy touchscreens.

pro tip: only go meta when you have a suspect and evidence to back up your claims
you keep getting btfo because you leave yourself too exposed btw

That's true, but I still feel that the early seasons have more imagination even if the writing was subpar.
The later seasons have much stronger writing, but you start to notice how more and more episodes are "The Enterprise ferries a diplomat to negotiate a treaty but they are hiding something".

I didn't make the fucking thing.
Just posted it for that user who didn't want to wade through 700+ off episodes of Trek.
It does list the episode as Great at least.

Because Jimmy has autism. He tries to correct people's posts but he can't tell the difference between grammar and spelling or a contraction vs. a basic possessive pronoun.

F is the failing grade, momo.

Means they have patrician tastes, that's what it means.
Star Trek was always a very brash-and-bold thing, while TNG turned it into something weirdly philosophical.

That's not the start of acceptance though, that happens before duet. Duet is still definitely the best episode of the season.

I'm just asking legitimate questions.

lol what a fucking dumbo

The Autismo STD fan/CBS shill has no other comebacks to criticism of his shitty cancer show

The issue won't be ship damage. It'll be, "How can you make the series work when you've sent them 900 years in to the future and you're basically having a group of explorers out exploring in an ox-wagon when you've got literally everyone else also exploring but with airplanes. "

Yeah, there were a lot of those. Still, Picard himself was shown to be kind of the worst diplomat ever. At least Riker was proven to be good with klang diplomacy, Picard mostly got the diplomatic fuckup eps (and Darmok)

It's like early TOS, too. They started off with all kinds of wacky non-humanoid aliens, and then realized they no longer had the budget to support that, so we got a bunch of "It's a [period of Earth's history] planet!" episodes later on instead.

>literally everyone else

I don't think it's that much of a problem, since everybody's tech progresses at its own rate. like the Iconians had gateways 200,000 years ago and nobody else does yet (except for very limited uses in STO).

they can still run into pre-warp planets. the Federation itself is probably on the level of the energy being of the week from TOS/TNG though.

Says who?

>The series is already in trouble because manufacturers do not want to make merchandise which won't sell.
This. STD and Jar Jar merch is permanently on sale on many licensees. They can't simply drop normal retail price because it would make clients to question price of old school Trek merch. I don't really think it is in trouble in regards to anything other than quality. Star Trek is one of very few IP's with any value CBS has to offer for All Access. Even it isn't profitable they need to keep doing Star Trek until they have genuine hit product or they decide to bail on All Access. That is the reason why STD will get extended and Picard show will be made.

>Picard show could come back with 100% rights intact, depending on timing.
If that happens, they would have to do all the art department stuff from the scratch if they want to appeal original fans. They still have shit tier writers in shit tier production company that will continue to shit on the IP they work on. Suits on the top really don't care as long as their staff can cook up nice numbers to show for shareholders.

Your mom's bull

The show is made by people who are incompetent. What do you expect?

Travel speed isn't the issue thanks to the spore drive, and impulse is impulse. The real issue is they've got the Starfleet equivalent of some grandma's 20 year old Windows XP machine with a dozen toolbars and four viruses for a computer, BB guns for phasers and shields, and a warp system that can't recrystallize its own dilithium. Also all their security codes are 950 years out of date so they can't prove their identity or even talk to anyone.

I’m old enough to have watched and remembered all of TNG at original syndication broadcast.

>Michael Burnham is responsible for causing all of the problems and mysteries in the season and solving them.

>Due to Starfleet Regulations, the ship, the spore drive, Burnham herself, the time suit technology, and everything associated with the past season is never to be referred to again. Discovery is sent into the future, along with Burnham.

Like in season 1, the inconsistencies within its own canon are too numerous to list, but the major ones are thus:

1) Georghiu accompanied the Discovery through the wormhole, so if Discovery is indeed in the future, there can be no Section 31 show starring Georghiu.

2) One of the major arcs was the idea of the Sphere data and how Section 31 wanted to steal it. Section 31 tried to steal the data while it was being transferred from the Discovery to the mother Burnham's time suit, so they got some of it. At some point in this area (which is not clear), the data not only had the ability to defend itself (so, consciousness of a kind) but also no longer could be transferred out of Discovery (even though it was being transferred to the suit). The bottom line was that the information could not be removed from the database AND had the capability of controlling the ship, defending itself against destruction. None of this makes sense episode to episode, which is a problem.

3) There are numerous examples of shields being raised but people transporting through them (the last episode had Leland transporting through Discovery, but in the very next scene there's a discussion about transporting Spock back but they can't unless they 'lower their shields'). Granted, this happens in older trek once in a while, but examples like this show clearly that the writers do not understand the scientific 'rules' of this Star Trek universe at all. In order for them to work and be successful as plot points, they have to be consistent, and since they're not even within episodes, STD turns into a kind of pseudo-science fantasy.

>Also all their security codes are 950 years out of date so they can't prove their identity or even talk to anyone.

presumably the future Federation would be able to figure all of that out within two beeps of a tricorder.

There's no reason it has to be JJ production either, the art stuff will almost guaranteed be done from scratch anyway. The problem with CBStrek was suits cared way too much (and were incredibly wrong).

>le memes
Yikes. /got/ is reddit.

Past a certain point it starts to require specialized historical knowledge to communicate. What would you do if an 18th century British ship of the line appeared out of a wormhole and started signaling at you in semaphore? Unless Discovery starts pumping out wide band analog signals on subspace radio nobody is going to be able to understand a damn thing they say, and that's a very dangerous thing to do for a ship with shields and weapons nearly a thousand years out of date.

>decompression involves everyone rubbing soap onto each other
>shower scenes

>trip gets locked into a tiny escape pod with a female
>trip gets to fuck every alien
Did they let the fanfic writers write enterprise?

>virgin picard: 4 shitty tng films over 8 years
>chad kirk: 6 great st films over 12 years

>virgin picard: 78, looks 80
>chad kirk: 88, looks 66

This is the laziest, most brain dead way of defending STD. I had thought you shills had moved past it.

The psychic sex bond in S4 was straight out of bad fanfics, too.

4) There is significant character inconsistency not only between seasons but also between episodes. Georghiu changed dramatically, and so did Tilly. That being said, surprisingly Pike and Saru were essentially the same, with Saru being the best written in terms of an actual story arc. The uneveness translates as well into the language used in the series, which flutters between 2018 buzz-words and phrases to more uniform 'future' talk that we see from Pike and Saru.

5) While the sets undeniably have very high production value, they continue to follow an aesthetic that is not at all practical for a work environment or for the purpose and function of shipboard operations. Furthermore, issues like the contractually obligated 'front window' of the bridge and indeed 'glass' that can crack instead of transparent aluminum, or the new turbolift rollercoasters contradict heavily what a starship would require to be realistic. Finally, in the last episode we saw a failure of the 'gravitational' fields in the corridor; this doesn't work, as in this period the gravity was controlled in the deck plates, so if they were functioning then 'down' would always be towards the floor, and if they failed, there would be no gravity at all. But gravity could not shift to a wall. So, the sets look nice, but they're utterly useless.

That's why Voyager is pure

Exactly. The equipment is fucking ancient and there's nothing Discovery can do that a federation ship from 900 years in the future hasn't done and more. Plus aren't we supposed to be at the point where the federation had time ships and shit? Clearly they'd know discovery jumped 900 years in the future by sending an agent back to see the entire mission unfold, and already have a welcome party waiting for them when they arrived.

All of the Kirk movies were shit. He looked like a faggot granny and they didn't even give him a good death.
Picard is still going strong, wouldn't be surprised if the series leads to a movie.

Wait, wait, wait, wait, wait a goddamned minute.

Idk if this has been said but for some reason the plot of flinging the ship into the far future seemed familiar. Then I realized....

They're ripping off Andromeda now. First they ripped off the tardigrade shit, now this. Andromeda is basically a show about what would happen if a Federation ship was flung into the future and the Federation didn't exist anymore? I bet any amount of money, this is what they'll do. Discovery will be in the future, the Federation will be almost non-existent and Mary Sue hero Michael will restore the entire Federation and be it's greatest hero.

Fuck Star Trek.

Horizontal/vertical turbolifts have been a thing since TNG, but they've never been visualized before.

Andromeda was created by Roddenberry.

There comes a point when respecting hard core fans and accepting the fact it just wouldn't look like that collide, I personally think the modernised look was the one thing this show got right. You have to seriously stretch credulity to sell the TOS era bridge design, without conceding it's just a product of 1960's sfx limitations. I mean seriously, it's just a bunch of unlabeled colored lights that make no sense whatsoever.

6) Finally, the forced diversity (in particular, the rolling man who keeps on appearing in the background) interferes heavily with the way the series is written and the way it is shot, to the point where it is noticeable to an absurd degree. Women are written as men, and men are demeaned and degraded. The lack of balance is significant when one considers the intent of having women in power in every situation: Admiral Cornwell, The Klingon 'Mother' L'Rell, Burnham telling Pike what to do at every turn, Amanda being 'bossy', etc. As characters, they are written to act like men, because that is how the writers believe 'power' actually is...which belies their own lack of understanding of human character. As for the roller, there are corridors, door jams, etc. that make having a wheelchair entirely impractical on a starship, and if they can make Ariam why can't they give this guy new legs?

Season 2 was trash. It will be forgotten, not even used for the butt of jokes. It will be, if anything, evidence of how far leftist propaganda infiltrated and destroyed franchises.

Will burnham be in season 3?

I'm merely stating the facts, which you can't dispute. I could make you a 3d render of the Discovery bridge that imitates the painted cardboard and wood materials of the TOS with flat, bright lighting. But I'm not going to waste time on a brainlet like you.

Wrong. The inside of a turbo shaft has been seen multiple times. They aren't rollercoasters inside an absurdly cavernous starship infrastructure.

Yeah, they even got the Spockscope and bridge clipboards believably updated for modern audiences. Even by ENT it was already straining believability a bit to pass off a TOS Connie as more advanced than the NX or even real world technology.

Star Trek V: turboshaft climbing sequence
TNG: Disaster: turboshaft climbing sequence
As well as the plans that were normally used for designing the sets for TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. In other words, people actually thought about this, drafted it as if it were a real ship, so that things would all make sense. They have been visualized before. The difference is that in the case of STD, they don't make sense (but look 'cool' to someone who is not thinking).

Attached: it hurts....jpg (685x543, 36K)

glad to know im not the only one to get a boner watching that scene

that feel when no black momma to treat me

>we can't create a good looking bridge with modern techniques that fits within established parameters
Not with that attitude.

No you couldn't.

STD's contradictions come from external politics - the show as originally designed was pure propaganda in a world where Hillary won in 2016.
>oops
When Trump won they had to scramble to make the show less openly propaganda or risk the President attacking it directly, but all the bullshit you describe is bits of the show's true origins leaking through. I'd bet ten thousand dollars Burnham was originally supposed to be a tranny, hence the name.

>they don't make sense (but look 'cool' to someone who is not thinking)
That's TNG in a nutshell.

>risk the president attacking it
that has never been a risk for anyone and complete bullshit. Mike is a tranny.

I want to fuck that lanky lady until she falls apart

How is that cringe?

TNG had tons of consultant shit going on to keep it honest.

We haven't seen the horizontal part visualized before, but it's there.

Also, the Final Frontier turboshaft scene is inconsistent with canon anyway. The numbers don't go up when you ascend, the bridge is not on deck 78, and the Enterprise is not 78 decks tall.

Imagine if you lived your every waking moment """""thinking"""""" like this

>a show about flying around in space and aliens needs real science or it isn't """honest"""
what the fuck hahaha

This is true (because the fans care) but mostly needs self-consistency.

Timeship Relativity was 29th century. These two other moron who responded have never watched Trek before or they’re straight DS9 fags

This deserves a larger discussion. Bear with me, I'm going to quote John Eaves, regarding the design of the Enterprise E.

"Once that finally happened (basic concepts on paper), Eaves started putting in details. About the same time, he paid a visit to artist Rick Sternbach, who had recently designed the Starship Voyager for the new television series. As Eaves had never seen the ship or show, he wanted to see Sternbach's design, and also prepare himself for the process of getting the new starship approved.

"...I finally asked Rick, 'What does it take to get one of these ships approved? What are the steps? I know design has a lot to do with it, but what other particulars do I need to know?'

Well, Rick reached into his desk, pulled out a huge file, and threw it atop his desk. It was about two hundred drawings thick! 'This,' he said, 'is what it took to get the Voyager approved'. And he opened up the fil enad showed me sketch after beautiful sketch, each with subtle changes, so that I could see how the shape began, then evolved into the final product. On top of it all, he'd made a little booklet that included the breakdown: all the decks, what the ship could do, how it did what it did. He even had a scale chart comparing the Voyager's size to the sizes of the other Federation starships.'

This but unironically.

>trying to justify the STD turbolifts literally being on roller coaster tracks that twist and turn just for the sake of being "cool"
Turbolift shafts were always simple tubes that moved vertically or horizontally.
DisMISSED.

Even the Enterprise Enterprise was more futuristic than the original Enterprise. Nobody cares about your boomer-tier 60's spaceship design powered by a steam engine.

t. incel who doesn't know how computers work

Star Trek Discovery is literally water in the desert. An oasis.

Remaster DS9 if you're so great. You won't, because we both know you're a gigantic loser.

Of piss

And characters still meandered in clearly uneducated discussions written by aging boomers. Any Data dialogue is bound to include some stupid quasi-factoid that was debunked even back then.

Star Trek Discovery is literally crap in my ass. An unshat shit.

>Star Trek: Discovery’s second season has been stronger than its first.

The first season was kino. The second season was super kino.

Imagine the third one.

>we havent seen the horizontal part so it could be some silly rollercoaster in a cavern despite the on screen cutaways showing this not to be the case
>set design got the numbers wrong once so we can do anything we want
You are a brainlet.

Sometimes, Data eps tended to revolve around him investigating known non-facts though, not quoting them as scripture. Science is not his religion

He didn't need to record facts, he was trying to become human and in-character acknowledgement of complete bullshit is part of that.

I don't even watch Discovery, I'm just here to remind you that old Star Trek had its problems too.

Are you ok? Like, did you hit your head or something?

Attached: large.png (500x281, 146K)

The producers must have misinterpreted the complaints of "slow Klingon scenes" in the first season as "slow ___ scenes" which is why in season two every scene rushes by with characters spewing dialogue at 1,000,000 light-years an hour

In theory, you could crowdsource a DS9 remastering to /trek/ through "machine learning" software. We could do it, you and me and everyone else here working together, one episode at a time.

captrobau.blogspot.com/2019/04/how-did-i-upscale-star-trek-ds9-footage.html

>Even the Enterprise Enterprise was more futuristic than the original Enterprise.
That's arguable, sure. But they made an honest attempt to fit in. With STD they don't care.

I saw this before, it looks like trash. Upscaling is not a remaster. You're just increasing the sharpness of the DVDs.

I told you to do it, Morpheus.

Remaster this *unzips dick*

It's better than what you're gonna get otherwise, which is nothing!

Remastering is often just upscaling, depends on the sources available. Lots of current gen open ML upscales are garbage though and the ones that aren't are priced for studios.

Not entirely true.
Ira "Nobody Knows I'm a Lesbian" Steven Behr is using the DS9 doc as a backdoor way to fund a full scale DS9 remaster like what was already done to TNG. (scanning the original 35mm film reels)

Old Trek had honest differences. Nu trek varies from old trek due to incompetence and a complete disregard for what came before. You know, I can understand not knowing Star trek, to some degree but if you work on Star Trek and you dont understand Star Trek FANS, you are fucked.

"So now it's January 1996, and we're just officially starting on the feature...Herman (Zimmerman) and I started presenting the last of the Enterprise-E drawings to Mr. Berman, and he loved all our efforts. This gave Rick [Sternbach] the time he needed to do his blueprints.'
Same Book

What you have to understand about all of this is that designing a starship in traditional Trek required thought and consideration for every step. The outside was designed first in terms of shape, then the interior was mapped out for the sets and their location in the ship, in order to understand corridor placements, size of rooms and turbolifts, etc. It was designed practically as if designing an actual building.

What has been clear from the onset is that STD wasn't designed this way at all...it was designed the same way as the sets for the JJ movies, where the set was designed without any regard for what is surrounding it. The ships were scaled with absolute freedom, which means that windows and shit don't match up at all to the scale between the exterior shots and the interior shots. Finally, it allows stupid things like the turboshaft roller coaster which essentially shows that there's a shittonne of wasted space in a starship when space is normally at an extreme premium.

Yes, but they were tubes. Not open tracks like under Gringott's. Don't try to Burhamsplain to me.

Attached: Flying Saucer.webm (1920x1080, 2.63M)

And with all the money he raised, he was only able to remaster, what, 30 minutes of footage?

Good luck crowdfunding the whole series. Your only options are crowdsourcing or bust.
