>stealing idea
>in an industry where everything is a rehash of a rehash of a rehash of a remake of a reboot
wow it's fucking nothing

Seems legit.

>Director Charlie Kessler claims that the pair stole the overriding story of Stranger Things from his 2011 short film, titled Montauk. A six-minute film, Montauk is based in the 70s and works as a found-footage piece from the time, which uncovers government experiments.

>Alleging that he pitched Montauk to become a series to the Duffer Brothers at Tribeca Film Festival in 2014, and gave them ‘materials’ on how the project would work. It would follow the story of a missing boy in the town, and his friends and family’s attempts to find him. At the same time, there would be a government base performing secret experiments on children. Kessler adds they did not show any interest, but later pitched a story, titled Montauk, to Netflix. That show was later developed into Stranger Things, with Montauk, Long Island being traded for the fictional Hawkins, Indiana.

>Series one of Stranger Things, which became a huge success, was based in the early 80s, and featured a boy going missing and the effect it has on its family as he appears to be untraceable. There was also a young girl, named Eleven, who was getting experimented on. The Duffer Brothers tried to have the lawsuit thrown out, however the Los Angeles judge refused, and now they will be facing a court case as a result.

I hope that means all those shitty kid actors are out of work and Finn Wolfhard will have to do twink porn to survive

I remember that Stranger Things was called Montauk before it was aired.

Doesn't surprise me, The Duffer Brothers seem like insufferable hacks
Just look at how terrible season 2 turned out

>experiments performed on kids in a small town is a unique concept
what a shit case

Attached: 1555590001759.png (325x300, 87K)

They didn't even change the characters' names

I hope those hack fucks lose it all over this. I thought it was a miracle that S1 turned out well but turns out that it was a simple case of theft.

Holy SHIT, it all fuckingg adds up now.

>Dude with real passion and plan pitches idea to two hacks
>"Eh, gay, no one would watch it"
>Sneak around behind his back and steal the exact fucking synopsis, nearly word-for-word
>Get big and famous
>Season 2, nothing to steal so they have to make their own shit
>It fucking bombs
>Dude who came up with everything in the first place watches Stranger Things
>"What the fuck! That's my show!"
>Sue the two hack brothers with righteous fury
>"N-No, bro, don't sue us. W-We're gonna have this lawsuit buried underground!"
>Judge calls them on their bullshit
>"We're sooooooooooooo sorry. We'll never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, EVER do something like that again! We made a biiiiiiiiiiig mistake!"

Fucking hacks. I straight up fucking hate plagiarists, they're always the dumbest fucking people. Look, if you're stupid and untalented, I don't give a fuck. You enjoy smoking weed being a loser in your 30's? That's fucking sweet, I don't give a fuck. But don't steal my fucking shit and try to pass it off as your own to try and impress women, you fucking leech. You were cool before, and I had NO fucking problem with you. I would've hung out with you because you were fucking chill; but then you had to be a fucking leech and waste all my time and money on a lengthy fucking legal battle that dragged on for 3 months? Honestly, FUCK you. I never should've lawyered up. Winning the case just wasn't satisfying enough. I'd rather have kicked your fucking teeth in and went on trial for assault and battery than deal with your fucked up lmaoweed smoking ass. Fucking piece of shit.

You can't copyright a concept, only a completed work.

Lol spaz

Can we finish one fucking Netflix series before the creators go to jail?

No

Man Netflix just generally seems like scummy shit in general.

You can when you steal someone's pitch

Have sex.

Listen, don't pretend like you have any idea what you're talking about.

>everyone makes remakes and reboots so it's no big deal that two hacks stole and made millions from some guy's original idea
??

Wizards always go fucking apeshit over their intellectual property; how did they get away with using D&D in their show?

They worked together.

Come on, that speech when they won that award and Winona was having a seizure in the background was epic and not cringe at all.
Proof that they're great writers!

what is happening here

Based. Those schmucks need their asses kicked in.

They didn't give tve speech, Harvour did.

haha yeah

Cringe but redpilled

k

how is it an original idea if it's just a rehash of the 80s?

I want to assfuck Sadie until I'm exhausted

youve gotta do like james cameron: he does things that are so generic and steal from so many people that its impossible to caught the motherfucker.

there was a ship wich name was titanic, i mean, cmon.

Nice reddit humor.

Nobody gives Beyond the Black Rainbow any credit either

>young girl experimented on by a mysterious father figure
>experiments with psychedelic drugs (obviously ripped from MKUltra)
>young girl develops telekinetic powers and ultimately defeats/escapes the facility
>set in the 80s

If it's proven they stole it, I bet a bunch of articles will be written about how plagiarism isn't a big deal.

Just got out of a tiring and lengthy legal battle over some piece of shit DUDE WEED type who plagiarized something from me when we were working on a school project. The whole thing is still fresh in my mind and I'm still pissed. Sometimes I wish I never got the lawyers involved and I just beat the satisfaction out of him old-school style until I was happy.

>Working on school project
>Dude is a fucking waste of space stoner
>I partner up with him because no one else would
>We're supposed to write a short story
>I really put my heart and soul into it while he fucking did nothing
>I didn't really care because I honestly preferred if he stayed out of my way and let me do my thing
>He also seemed like the kind of dude you could just drink with and relax
>The book came out so great that I wanted to get it published
>We both have to present the story to the class
>He goes up to me and says "Hey bro, can you tell me what it's about?"
>"Yeah dude, it's about ________________"
>After just going through a big legal battle, I'm not taking any fucking chances and telling you what it's about until it's fucking published
>He says cool and we both present and we both get good grades and everyone is happy
>I end up rooming with a few months later
>I start to realize just how much of a fucking loser he is
>Doesn't clean
>Smokes weed in his room until it's smokey
>Only eats microwaved meals while telling girls he's a vegan and preaches eating healthy food
>When girls come over, he points to my weights and tells them those are all his and talks about the joys of self improvement but never ONCE have I seen him lift
>Tells girls cars are too mainstream or something, but I know for a fact his brother told me it's because he has a bunch of DUI's and he keeps failing the driving test
>Plays fucking wonderwall staring creepily at girls during house parties (what is this, 2009?)

Because they stole the plot and characters.

u mad?

If the guy is telling the truth, they will settle this out of court and pay him a few million bucks

Attached: image2.jpg (530x600, 61K)

He'd have to be a moron to accept that. He can completely take them down.

You're probably a tryhard poseur though. You reek of arrogant insecurity. Like you're the quiet guy at a party who's all uptight and you clam up when people try to talk to you. Probably some sort of "dude i lift weights AND i write books i'm kinda of a Renaissance man. i'm intellectual and physical." you don't totally abstain from drugs and alcohol but you probably only drink super specific shit you think is sophisticated. you come off as arrogant because you can't relax in social situations and just talk to people like they're humans too.

But would he profit more from that? Would the court give him all the money Netflix gained from the show? How can you even calculate that, it's impossible to know how many people subscribed to Netflix because of the show.

>In general, over the course of a few months, I learn he's a fake piece of shit
>By the way, he doesn't have a job except for selling weed, but he smokes so much of it he barely makes a profit
>One day he says "Dude, I'm gonna be a writer like you and make some money for once"
>I say "okay, I'll help you with it"
>He declines and I think nothing of it
>A month or so passes, and my short story from class is beginning to resemble a real, working novel
>During another house party, I hear him talking to this girl about """""""his""""""" novel
>I notice, before he began talking about it, he seemed to look around the room for me, not knowing I was literally right behind him
>He then goes on and on trying to impress this girl using MY plot, with MY characters, using MY hard work that he didn't do SHIT with all those months ago when we had that creative writing class
>He then goes on to tell her he already got the book published by some hack fixture at the local community college
>At this point I feel like I'm going fucking insane, the whole situation is just surreal to me
>I interrupt him by going "Heeeeey, do we have any more chips?"
>He jumps out of his fucking skin
>"Y-Y-Yeah, man! We got tons of chips, haha!"
>I go outside to calm down and he follows me outside
>"Dude, so, I kind of used what we wrote in that one class and I made a book really quick and got it published. We can share the credit 50/50, and I don't think it'll make any money so I don't know if I can give you anything."
>This dude wrote a 100 page short story, zero editing, shitty grammar, shitty spelling errors, NO imagination or heart into it whatsoever, JUST so he could impress some girl and pretend that MY ideas were actually his
>I tell him he's fucked up, I'm moving out, and also I'm going to get his book taken off the fucking shelves, even IF it's so shitty no one will fucking buy it
>The fucking audacity to steal MY shit just so he can impress some girls and not look like a loser

I think he'd definitely win more than they'd be willing to give him out of court. That's on top of the revenge.

It would be stupid to offer him less than he could gain from the court if his case is good enough. If the options are to pay him 10 million dollars and lose the show or just pay him 12 million dollars to shut up a logical person would pick the latter. And a logical person would not pursue revenge if not doing so profits him more

That’s not the same as a dude pitching you a show that you reject and then you turn around and pitch that same show to Netflix and get rich

you sound like an idiot

>and gave them ‘materials’ on how the project would work
Well isn't he a retard.

I would pick 10 mil and revenge over 12 mil and letting those cocksuckers make even more money in the long run.

Seething stoner failure detected

My whole issue with him was that HE was an arrogant try hard, you dumb fuck. I drink whatever's going. I'm actually working/lower class who worked hard to get where I am right now. I'm also frankly pretty social and I love singing karaoke, letting loose on the dance floor, and bro'ing out with my friends. I know what kind of person you're referring to, and whether you believe me or not, I'm not it. I'm pissed because I'm proud of my work, and it's supposed to get me out of this wagie shithole. The same way basketball is some black kid's lifeline to a better life, writing is my lifeline for getting out of wagiedom, so yeah, seeing it being used to pick up chicks really fucking irritates me cause it's my fucking baby.

>He begs me not to do anything and pleads with me, telling me he won't do it ever again (no fucking duh)
>I tell him to go back inside, right fucking now, and tell that girl it was my book and he plagiarized everything in it from me
>He just dawdles like "Dude, c'mon, I'm never gonna do it ever again, I promise, man"
>I tell him I'll be pressing charges
>We go to a small claims court and it's even televized kek because it's kind of a shitty show people watch in my state where real people show their real problems, like a local Judge Judy but without the budget and considerably more boring
>Turns out the fucking stoner has loaded parents and they do a whole bunch of bullshitting and it takes fucking forever for everything to get through
>However, once all the evidence is in and some admittedly amazing leg work from my cheap lawyer, the verdict goes through just like that
>3 months of buildup, and once it actually goes to court, he's found guilty as fuck, just like that
>I want to make him publically admit to all the girls he lied to that he's a plagiarist, but I couldn't get that, so instead the book is taken off the shelf and I get some money (not enough),and a bunch of other small shit that kindasorta added up to a small victory

Dude stop posting essays

harsh but fair

Attached: 12.06.13 PM.png (588x664, 306K)

that's easy to say on Yea Forums when you are not the one negotiating about it

Who hurt you baby?

>The payoff is so fucking small for all the bullshit and time that got wasted that I legitimately kept thinking to myself sitting there "Wow, I really wish I'd just fucking kicked his ass and dealt with the fallout later. That would've been more satisfying and probably even less of a legal hassle"
>My lawyer tells me to keep that thought to myself
>I move out and currently my book is just getting through with its finishing touches, ironically paid for with the money I got from the lawsuit

Honestly, dude. Fuck plagiarizing hacks. Plagiarism is the ultimate indicator of being a stupid fucking brainlet. How stupid do you have to be to NOT be able to think for yourself? How stupid can you be to publish the EXACT same shit in my notes, and not even bother to change the character's names? FUCK you, dude.

I was actually watching Judge Judy or Judge Brown or whatever the fuck on tv, and a VERY similar case to mine showed up and I kept thinking to myself, "Holy shit, even this plagiarizer is a literal highschool dropout who smokes weed all day".

Plagiarists are fucking dumb as fuck.

No, I'm just vengeful and petty in general.
And if the people that ripped me off were Jewish as well then I'd pick revenge even if it made me $0.

Powerful

If he can prove he was involved in the creative process though he's also entitled to a cut of future profits seeing as how Netflix are now creating comics, games and inevitable spinoff series. That's more valuable than "here's 12 million now fuck off".

when do you want it?

Did you lose your way to Reddit or something?

Every idea is derivative of something.

COPE

He could get a cut of the merchandising maybe?

when you're in the 10 millions already you're already gonna have enough to live at least comfortably for a long time and be known as the real creator of a show people loved. why not just drop the extra 2 million and take down the show too? you don't have to be a petty asshole to realize what the better option is.

What did imdb mean by this?

Attached: montauk.png (733x428, 296K)

Fuck you, I should've kicked your fucking ass when I had the chance, you stoner piece of shit. We could've been cool. We could've just hung out, but you just HAD to be a fucking parasite. Even your own brother hates you, you know that? Everyone fucking pushes you from place to place because no one wants to be stuck saddled with you. THAT's why your parents paid you off to go live elsewhere. THAT's why your brother is too busy "studying" to go hang out. THAT's why none of the girls call you back, no matter how much you insist she was into you, you creepy fuck. THAT's why me and ___ didn't pick up our phones that time we went out for chicken wings, you pile of shit. Yes, our phones WEREN'T broken. Yes, we knew EXACTLY why you were calling. YES, WE FUCKING IGNORED YOU, BECAUSE YOU'RE A PIECE OF SHIT HUMAN BEING.

Dude check yourself into like therapy or an asylum, you're ranting on the internet like schizo, you should get evaluated.

>"Cheating is the same as plagiarizing!"

Yeah, I fucking cheated in middleschool by plagiarizing my essays off wikipedia. Literally pedantic shit trying to compare that with stealing my fucking notes, rushing out a shitty book in two weeks, using MY creation to make girls think YOU came up with everything when you just sat the fuck back all those weeks ago in class, and then offering "50/50" when you went and speed-published your shit behind my back. Yeah, that's comparable.

Honestly, yeah. I legit was fucking going crazy over that piece of shit. It's called "stress", and it happens to fucking everybody.

Attached: 1555175791035.jpg (647x740, 54K)

I mean you can reference it just fine, plus once it got big Wizard/Hasbro wanted a piece of that pie
never mind how shallow the reference was and how LITTLE to do it has with modern d&d

Attached: be3.png (600x700, 143K)

The same happened with a Spanish time travelling series. The creators went to the US to pitch the idea and they were rebuked. They ended up creating their Spanish version anyway. Somehow the place where they pitched the idea ended up creating an identical US version of the Spanish one.
Sadly US justice defended their own.

2bh Cameron actually got caught for stealing The Terminator from a TV show. After Terminator's release in 84, the TV show creator/writer went apeshit, sued Cameron, and now The Terminator has to acknowledge, in the credits, that the work seen in the movie is a derivative of his TV show. Basically a rip off. Cameron got fucked. Avatar is whole other story.

This is everything.

holy cringe, I was with you for a while but that isn't the same guy

>do something
>its successful
>smell of money hits the air
>greedy dickwads come out of the woodwork to sue you

Basically the American experience. If you're doing something big you're gonna get sued.

t. Netflix

The Terminator thing is fucked, but Avatar is whatever. Dances With Wolves has been out since Jesus times. The whole "white man learns native ways, gets good" has been done a million times by thousands of other artists. It's a trope by this point.

Shit like "Battle Royale" being plagiarized nowadays is nothing, because the genre for battle royales has now entered the public sphere. I remember there was a ripoff of Battle Royale literally months after it came out in Japan (I forgot what it was called, and it definitely wasn't Hunger Games, cause HG came out YEARS after BR). THAT was fucked up. Capitalizing on something original and creative by banking in your copied design is fucked up. Following a trend years after the fact is just following the trend. There's a difference.

having sex doesnt stop people from stealing your shit, brainlet.

Now where did I put my shekels I need to count them again.

Attached: 1555474705332.jpg (1024x1012, 89K)

Inspiration and homages can work, if it actually adds something to your original work, but outright stealing/plagiarizing, like Tarantino or now these Duffer Brothers, shouldn't be praised. I know ignorance is bliss, but people should know by now that most shit that comes out today is derivative and hackneyed.

>After just going through a big legal battle
wait what. you went through another legal battle prior to that? do americans really sue this often?

Attached: 1550742450638.jpg (433x432, 16K)

I meant that I just got out of a 3 month long legal battle with that brainlet stoner dude, so I refused to reveal the plot to my book until the book gets published. It's also professional legal advice I received as the battle was on going. I only had to go to court once for that.

Americans will sue over anything, that's why it is such an old joke to have Americans wanting to sue

>it's ok to cheat when I DO IT!!!
>if its done to me, that's fucking criminal!

It really depends, if the second option also puts him in the limelight as the "real" creator of Stranger Things (depends on how they sell it/how the press present it) then that might give him a bigger foothold than the +2 million out of court.

I don't think anybody ever sued but Avatar is so close to a 2000AD comic titled Firekind it's ridiculous.

Read the dudes posts. Hes obviously a mental defective suing over a derivative as fuck book that he will probably sell 2 copies of. That's the problem. Any schizophrenic can sue anyone for anything.

Makes sense. When season 2 is actually a rehash of season 1 you know they ran out of ideas. Or in this case, ran out of stolen ideas.

>I'm going to spend a ton of money and time to get a guy who did basically no work to get a slap on the wrist.
And you say HE'S the ultimate indicator of being a stupid fucking brainlet?

literally the worst thing thats gonna happen is hes gonna get royalties and only a small percentage and thats only if he wins the case (he wont)

Artists typically don’t think in legal terms (getting signed NDAs and non-competes) ... they just want to find a way to make their dream projects. Also may not have known that legit industry types would act in bad faith this blatantly...

It's not like stranger things is some revolutionary original idea to begin with. Someone should sue the creatorfag for being an unoriginal lazy bitch.

Watching him grovel and go crawling back to his rich parents for legal help was immensely satisfying. I literally, actually, unironically felt my heart jump when I saw him begging his dad for more money after it was all over. It actually felt like justice. It felt really, really good.

funny that the Spanish version is better than the US version

Friendly reminder that Once Upon A Time should have been the Fables tv show, but they didn't want to pay the Fables creator anything after he did his pitch.

Not surprised after shamelessly ripping off other works in certain scenes. Under The Skin, for example.

Either this is a shitty larp or its real and you have an absolute shit novel that won’t sell enough copies to cover your costs...

No doubt shit like that happens... I’m talking about Vanilla Ice type shit where he clearly lifts the main riff and packages it as his own... OP story the Duffers don’t just copy the genre but the specific plot points of the story... it’s a clear cut case

The fact that they both had projects set in Montauk doesen’t convince me at all.

Everybody remembers that thing with the Montauk Monster and Plumb Island.

To me it’s like saying “oh, and two people JUST HAPPENED to write a story about a monster in The Pine Barrens”. I totally buy that they did.

And of course horror/Sci-Fi set near a military base isn’t original at all.

>"With reversible board! Choose between the upside-down and normal board!"

>*dabs*

absolute madlad

Why? You collaborated on the project together didn’t you? Weren’t both your names on it? It was a joint project, it’s your fault for taking it too seriously and jointly crediting someone else with work you wanted to build a career on.

I’m surprised you won in court since all this guy should have had to do was prove that it was submitted in class, before publishing, with his name on it.

I used to do most the work in group projects too (it’s funny how everybody on the internet is always the smart/hardworking one and not any of the other three). But it was just because it was easier for me personally and almost never actually enough work for the number of people involved.

Unless you actually got in his face for not working and he shut you down I’m just gonna assume you wanted to write this thing without tainting it with his input. And you wanted the excuse to submit it for (positive) feedback and validation.

I think a more original sci-fi/horror story should be set around a real-life incident instead of some fictional laboratory/military base.

Take the 1977 New York blackout for example, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City_blackout_of_1977

I bet you could make a cool suspenseful horror or thriller out of that. You could throw in a creepy sci-fi monster in there if you want, and use the blackout as an advantage, mainly because people don't know what's in the dark and therefore shit their pants.

Okay. If he has proof he actually pitched it to the brothers, then he seems to have a leg to stand on.

Millie bullying me for my tiny dick would only make it hotter.

He actually met the brothers and pitched them the idea and gave them project work on it which they then took and flipped. That's pretty unethical and illegal.

The fact that stories are so similar to me is secondary to the IP theft.

Sounds like a POO IN LOO

90's nostalgia will get old fast, it's just the shit-end of the 80's then they'll leech on another decade. It won't happen.

The most boring comedy ever

I got sued by this absolute basket case in college. We worked on a story together for creative writing class. This fucking nutjob keeps accusing me of smoking weed and not contributing so I just stop because fuck it hes going to write the shit and obviously doesn't want my help. This paranoid delusional nutcase turns in the paper and I think cool cause it's got my name on it but he did most of the work. The school paper picks it up and prints it next thing I know this psycho is suing me because my name is next to his in the paper. Fucking case got threw out but this loon still goes around talking shit about me. Fucking hate crazy people.

this would explain why the 2nd season sucked so much

Have to face a legion of netflix lawyers for years on an already tricky case versus quick payout which was more than you'd probably ever get from the property if you made it anyways. There's a reason why you don't hear about the results of those kids books that sue disney/pixar everytime they steal a story for a movie

And he fucking comes at me tells me that if he got 100% of the credit he’d be getting laid right now instead of me because then he could brag about how his 3.99 from amazon sales will get him out of working

oh. well he got the last laugh in the end where the curse he placed on them to fuck up their gender identification came true. bet he wishes he cast a more severe spell on them

I didn't know there was a short film but I told my friends right away they just copied The Mauntak Project. They definitely plagiarized someone.

No one cares

idea theft is one of those cases really hard to fucking defend tho
it's pretty much smear tactic that is funded to third party to stirred the pot from rival competitors

>season 1 is good because they stole the idea
>season 2 is shit because there was no else to steal from
Makes you think.

another idiot opens his mouth

Wow, you sound like a shitty writer if you can't even keep your own story straight.
"The payoff is so fucking small for all the bullshit and time that got wasted[...] I really wish I'd just kicked his ass and dealt with the fallout later. That would have been more satisfying and probably even less of a legal hassle"
"it was immensely satisfying. [...] It felt really, really good".

You're a fucking joke lad, you're literally trying to look happy and fulfilled on an anonymous image board and you can't even do that properly.

woah i never thought of it that way dude

It happens much more frequently than people realize. I pitched several ideas to famous creators I won't name due to legal reasons and they are all being made into films and TV series as of this year. I have the emails to prove it and the correspondence but I'm waiting to see how much further I can get my foot in the door. In the industry they call it a "happy accident" for new writers or some horseshit term like that since the rumor mill knows I'm the one who got ripped off. I can't burn bridges yet since I'm a literal who but I will say the whole never meet your heroes thing is true in my case. I've learned my lesson and I'm never sharing shit again until I have actual clout.

fuck you, you jannie pos, when i told you to have it, go fucking have it you jannie pos. its the truth even if you throw a hissy fit and issue a warning

Believe me or not idc. But do believe it happens way more than people realize. My best friend since kindergarten is also in a successful startup and he said IP theft is literally one of the biggest issues they've faced over the past 9 years.

fake and gay

I bet you're being gangstalked and Liam neeson hides in your shower and disappears down the drain the moment you go to find him too.

I figured people wouldn't believe me but your general response is indicative of people who will never accomplish anything. And now I'm realizing I'm the fool here for even "discovering" this on Yea Forums after 11 years.

That's a funny way of spelling Millie, user.

You are wrong go dilate tranny

If I was that guy and lost the case, I'd simply go to a hardware shop, buy some material, find where they live, and swing an axe.

Ok that's it I've contacted satan to put CIA nanobots into your morning cereal. You're fucked now.

I feel like a scheduled pitch, that was put on someone’s calendar, with an e-mail trail and with materials you created beforehand would be really easy to use as proof.

In this case it’s just a guy who cornered these creators, talked their ears off for fifteen minutes and is now coming after them without any actual proof. This is not the way to go about pitching and stirring up interest in ideas.

user, why are my trousers tight all of a sudden?

This. I don't know why people find IP theft so dubious when there are irrefutable paper trails. Ya sometimes it's a crazy person but a lot of times it's real. Capitalism breeds it. Which brings me to the question: are most people all secretly uncreative fucks that would rather support one of their fellow thieves and gaslight someone who is actually talented?

oh look at these naive souls
how will you survive in this society

Most likely the latter. There are probably some exceptions here and there, but they are the minority. Just look at the shit where the level of scrutiny is low, like kids' live action programming. It's the worst garbage you could imagine - that's likely what the industry as a whole would be if it wasn't for idea thievery.

The problem is I'm absolutely fucking broke and I've been advised by my agency not to pursue legal action anyways because I will probably get blacklisted. The problem insofar as I see it, is they saw a young guy that looked up to them and just exploited it. And you are partially right, I said way too much than needed to be said in most cases. I was naive. But I still have the emails and their responses in case I have enough money or clout for legal action.

Wasn’t that the setting of Mike from Red Letter Media’s sequel to Rocketeer?

Who?

This is probably what happened with True Detective since we're on the subject of season 1's that don't follow up so good...

Most of the time it's some lazy cunt with a halfass generic already derivative fan art tier idea complaining because they're poor faggots who lack the willpower to make their ideas reality.

wtf is that real life?

Attached: millie.jpg (540x581, 49K)

Y-you're saying Pizzapasta is a hack? No way!

Some fat guy

You're either a larper or an idiot or probably both.

Actually those are the people that tend to get support from the masses. The Total Recall artist comes to mind with his one set of generic sci fi armor. Which again vibes with my theory that people would rather only support legal battles the identify with. People can't imagine the wachowskis ripping off a poor black lady, even after the wachowskis fucking admit it. Because who can identify with a downtrodden woman that is responsible for one of the most famous trilogies of all time? But hey, some guy makes shitty sci fi armor and it's "his" idea according to social media.

No larping. More the latter admittedly. I just wish people recognized this shit is real.

based and schizopilled for sure

To be fair they are both on some level inspired by pic related. It's one of the most famous "secret projects" in the conspiracy theory scene.

Except they took the plot and even used the original name before changing it to Stranger Things kek

>spend time coming up with random ideas

The brothers pitched it as the same title of the short film, before changing it to Stranger Things. That's pretty uncanny

is this literally cp, or just tasteful, artsy underage nudity?

beyond the black rainbow is just a rip off of elfen lied

>Filmmaker Charlie Kessler filed thelawsuitagainst the Duffer brothers last April, accusing them of stealing the popular Netflix show's premise -- a secret government operation near an abandoned military base -- from his 2011 filmMontauk. In the lawsuit, Kessler claims that he met the Duffler brothers at the 2014 Tribeca Film Festival and pitched them the idea for a Montauk-inspired sci-fi series. The Duffer brothers have denied that Kessler had any connection to the creation or development ofStranger Things.
>Pre-production tittle of Stranger Things was named Montauk
They literally named the script Montauk before pitching it to producers. I hope they end up paying every penny earned and Season 3 gets cancelled.

This is my problem with the whole thing

>hey! Your derivative project is very similar to my derivative project!

It's like people who complain about their fan art being stolen. You dont have a Copyright to rick and Morty you spaz your r&m shirt design isn't even yours.

I was implying it definitely is legit. See Most normies dont even know about the montauk project. The fact that this guy would pitch something based on that, even if they didn't use the same title i believe they ripped him off. But they even used the same title for a while.

Imagine writing a movie plot similar to let's say "Spider-Man" which is a short film made in 2012, then you pitch the movie as "Spider-Man" with the same similar plot, before changing it to "The Human Spider".
>Uncanny plot similarities
>Literally used the same movie title
Doesn't sound like a conspiracy

Ah, gotcha

Except they shared the same plot and NAME of the show/film

I was reading john mcafees AMA the other day and he said he's had people travel for hours and hours to come to his property just to purposefully trip and fall and then file a lawsuit.

>inb4 webster's starts suing people for using words found in their dictionary

They used the same title as his short film project. Imagine how uncanny it would be if I wrote a film about two magicians in the 1800s who are rivals, then called it The Prestige, before changing the title at the l as st second.

The anons on here claiming they didn't steal shit, obviously haven't read the fucking article

Wow has anyone informed Montauk New York that someone is using their name without paying?

Stealing an idea is bullshit. If they had stole his actual work (the short film) ok but "stealing" some vague plot points and basic ideas? Fuck off.

Reminder they even stole the main theme song from Only God Forgives kek not even their music is original

Not him but I think it goes deeper than that. I think most people are just embittered talentless scum that would rather support reckless appropriation because they don't know how to dig deep and come up with their own material.

They also stole the NAME of the film and the NAMES of the characters lol

That's literally illegal. This guy is just playing by the rules. If you send in a spec script to a show and they use even one plot point from it, they have to pay you and give you writers credit.

One user just mentioned that their theme song sounds like the song that Only God Forgives. It's that scene where Gosling is fighting God

when do they all fuck each other in the sewer??? I've been waiting forever for that scene.

And? Were any of these names unique? No. For fucks sake he himself took the name from somewhere else!

But you have to give credit. Maybe they fleshed it out better but they definitely "borrowed" his vision
>Similar plot, almost word for word premise
>Same movie/show title
>literally same character names

This is also why “stuck-up” entertainers don’t want to hear about or see your screenplay, mixtape, stand-up routine, etc.
Not only is there nothing in it for them, but it might do them positive harm.

EAT SHIT JANNIES

No i totally agree. I'm just making a point that the common man won't rally against this because the common man steals ideas all the time. And Yea Forums is literally the scum of the common man. I don't expect this guy to get sympathy on Reddit, let alone Yea Forums.

>illegal
Lol no it's not. You schizos crack me up. You fags come up with some halfass idea and pester people with it then someone makes something vaguely similar and you have an aneurism because they're successful and you're poor.

>but people are too trusting with their ideas.
This. Don't ever tell someone your move before you make it.

>You schizos crack me up

Says the guy who has no fucking clue how intellectual property functions and head canons his own ideas.

Wahh no one agrees with me being a crybaby bitch Yea Forums sucks cry cry cry. U r pathetic.

Faggot is seething his show I'd about to get dabbed on. Go start another Marvel thread and fuck of Soiboy.

Based and redpilled.

Do you have permission to post that image. Its Copyrighted you know.

Because it was mediocre at best.

Never noticed hahahaha m.youtube.com/watch?v=Gygdj4qUAT8

Seriously though, what are the “damages” here? Coming up with a premise is not the hard part about getting a TV show made. Has this guy got a letter from Fox or something saying they were passing because the market was saturated?
Besides it’s not like he came up with the 80’s nostalgia pandering or dumping thirteen episodes at once which is what made the show a runaway success.

Why yes I do. I'm not making any money off of it nor do I own the platform it's being posted on and therefor cannot suffer any legal repercussions. I know this stuff may seem tough for a bainlet but you will get it some day.

Not reading all that

It's bad form. They should have brought him in as a consultant at least. I imagine they cut him out to build their brand. One can rationalize all day long but the truth is this is not how you (openly) operate in the biz.

Yes, it's very problematic for trivial reasons, but some are legitimately justified. Ever since we banned dueling, suing seems to be the best alternative
youtube.com/watch?v=6yjxkh3TECU

Then why did you?

That doesn't make what you're doing not Copyright infringement. See this is how I know you're some amateur armchair lawyer who has no idea about actual ip laws. Stay pleb faggot.

maybe in a perfect world

>what is unauthorized distribution

do you have a title for the book yet so I can look out for it?

If the owner of the IP in question wanted to they could indeed sue you for posting their copyrighted material here. It isn't profitable and more trouble than it's worth so they won't but still they very much could take you to court.

We aren't discussing copyright infringement. That's how I know you have now idea how IP laws function.

Why would I give you the name of my book so you can steal it?

No they couldn't. They would have to wrestle through several legal fences to even get to me and have more money than god. It would also become a civil rights issue and the optics would be terrible.

>Copyright has nothing to do with intellectual property law
Now I know you're just trolling cause no one is this fucking dumb.

faggot

Shut up you fucking 12 year old retard

>copyright infringement IS IP law

Please direct me to the copyright and I will admit I was wrong. But you can't because you still haven't realized we aren't discussing copyright infringement, a specific subset of laws irrelevant to the thread. Because you are a larper.

Yeah, that happened to my dad and his "dog plays basketball" idea.

uh...mods?

>uh, what is fair use?

Don't bother. These guys are literal idiots. I spelled it out for them and they didn't get it.

fuck you Dustin was the best part of the whole show

>I'll keep responding with retarded shit because I have to have the last word because that's how you win xD

(((they))) have been ripping their ideas out of my head for well over seven years now. I'm so fucking mad.

Yeah that WOULD be a great comback if I wasn't correct. You keep bringing up copyright infringement when that has nothing to do with what are are talking about. Copyright infringement is when someone copyrights work to protect it and someone violated copyright law. Which is not what happened with Stranger Things or Pepe you absolute mouth breather.

>t. doesn't understand fair use

Attached: 1540485733923.jpg (399x400, 47K)

You'll be dead in a year or two.

t. doesnt understand legal precedent

I guarantee you don't know how fair use works. It's a lot like sex. You have some vague idea because you saw something about it online but you have no idea what the details are.

my dad

Do tell with your superior knowledge of the legal system, out of the copious amounts of wealthy individuals that have posted images on Yea Forums, none of them have been sued?

Super 8 was pretty forgettable to be fair

>stranger things is a generic story that correlated with another generic story

creative work really at fault here

*why out of the

Attached: 440183229_015db7bca4_o-e1412608351451.jpg (668x796, 112K)

I would like to support you as an author because you seem like a cool guy who doesn't take shit from retarded stoners.
Also you need to market your book or nobody will buy it.

>if I rob someone and no one does anything about it that means armed robbery is legal

So your answer is no one wanted to do anything about it? Also

>resorting to shitty fallacious Yea Forums analogies to demonstrate your supposedly superior grasp of the law

What are you like the doogie howser of lawyers? You sound like you are 15.

I only post ideas that are so absurd they would never get made, or that I don't care about the profits I'd just be glad to see it made.
I posted an idea for a zelda film the other day that was well-received. I don't really give a shit if they rip it off. Alternatively, I frequently post ideas for hardcore lesbian films starring mainstream actresses. One day, these ideas will hit the big screen. Just gotta have some faith

But I've also actually a written a film that I'll literally never post here even summed up

>idea for a zelda film

Creative powerhouse

I would be if I were him honestly

I really hope this guy gets his fair due. But here's the thing, I reckon there are hundreds of examples like this that never go to court because it didn't become popular enough and/or the original author never found out

>mfw I never watched stranger things

Attached: emma bemused.jpg (1317x988, 96K)

>idea for a zelda movie
You wouldn't own that anyway, Nintendo would.

That and, like someone here mentioned, if you sue someone for stealing your idea you will never be in a room with anyone with any influence again.

Quite apart from them just disliking you since they’re a lot more likely to know the defendant; they won’t want to have to limit their future output to avoid any kind of resemblance.

Actually that's not accurate. If I wrote a full script for Mission Impossible 7 and made it a plot about Ethan being turned into a talking money who has to fight a new rogue group called the OZARK express who are tree-huggers from Ozarks and the entire film is about climate change, for example, then if the next mission impossible film contains ANYTHING from that script and I can prove that they read it, I can sue.
Doesn't matter that I don't own the franchise. Which is why studios don't take unsolicited pitches even for franchises they own

so... what's the book about?

Yeay i wrote a Star Wars book in 2001 and had 10 sample chapters up and the ILM and Lucas Film isp visited my web site ever three days and they stole so many ideas

You'll never know, thief

I invented the xmen and stan lee pulled my bvb thoughts from my mind and used my ideas. I believe he has transmitters implemented in my teeth and I thought they were inactive but I see a many of the BBC things in new marvel movies are actually my ideas so obviously my thoughts are being stolen again.

I did not write this post stop stealing my fucking thoughts!

You joke but Stan Lee literally stole almost all of his "creations".
He had a couple of hits and then found talented people and published their stories/characters only if they have him credit as a co-creator

Stop impersonating me!

Did they pay you for it? If they did then it’s theirs and there’s nothing wrong with that. Studios do it all the time just to keep competing movies from being made.

If it was that important to you, you should have gotten a deal with a penalty if it wasn’t produced.

This shit happens more often than you think because - surprise surprise - when some random asshole comes to a huge multi billion dollar network with an idea, what are you going to do about it if they just take your idea? They have all the money, the best lawyers, and that already discourages 99% of people that do this sort of thing from retaliating.

My aunt’s friend pitched the idea for the show “Medium” to NBC a couple decades ago and they did the same thing to her. She was salty as fuck forever and probably still is. Her lawyer told her there was no point in lawsuit because they would just drag it out as long as they could and just bleed her dry via legal fees.

Nobody cares and we all know you're not beating anyone up, ever.
