Atrocious use of stock sound effects with no mixing, commits the sins of having an ambient soundtrack and camera distortion, fuckin halloween store skeleton props, reliance on completely obnoxious jumpscares, fucking void of charisma protagonist who can't emote for shit, it's the type of carnival ghost ride shit that gives found footage a bad name.

The first time I seen Cloverfield was absolutely spoiler free, no synopsis or poster and it was fucking nuts. They should've promoted it similarly to The Matrix, people would've liked it better without knowing that it is the kind of film that it is. Found Footage, as a genre, requires that the film be presented as handheld camera footage by a character in the story, as opposed to a third person view you get in traditional cinema. However, and this is where found footage and mockumentary/faux documentary start to overlap, sometimes found footage movies can have bookends or inserts of traditionally filmed footage, usually in the form of an interview or something. Mockumentaries may also employ found footage segments.

Broadly, found footage and mockumentary are different genres but they attempt to do the same thing: convey in-universe presentations to maintain verisimilitude and immersion - that is, an FF movie is literally being filmed by a person IN the story, and a mockumentary is a detailed overview of a fictional event in its own universe. The best example of the divide is The Blair Witch Project and Curse of the Blair Witch - one is found footage, one is a mockumentary about the found footage. One is being filmed by the person it happened to, one purports to document the details of and around a completely fictional event, but one we as viewers were presented with as fact.
