Not for long.
The best thing about the ships in The Culture series is how they're characters, and they don't fall in to the usual AI tropes. They're all quite likable. Except for the GCU Grey Area of course.

Vanilla Imperial Star Destroyer will always be my sci-fi shipfu.
>Odyssey gets Asgard beam weapons.
>Destroys two Ori warships right off the bat.
Hard to beat the pure junky practicality of the Nostromo. It's like the uglier a spaceship is, the more aesthetic it is. I also love the scale of it, it's big enough to live and work in, but small enough that it feels like humans could create and maintain it.

It's not from a show or a movie but imo one of the best spaceship designs out there.
Lighthuggers are cool and you can touch my penis if you don't agree.
Mine. Hands down the most well-designed fighter for space combat in any series. And still manages to look awesome.
Space Tomcat.
Let’s get some actual Newtonian-compatible craft going, not just ‘planes in space’.
Massive shout-out to though.
From all sides.

OK, GUI-let
Very few people born after 2000 will recognize this. It's the kind of thing you of course know if you watch science fiction movies, but the general public don't recognize even the Zarathustra theme, except perhaps for "I heard it in a TV ad once."
So you admit you're underage?
I would post that site you know with the list of the problems, but it is blacklisted.
I'm over 40 years old; I'm commenting on the general reaction. Science fiction (other than capeshit) is dead. No, Star Wars doesn't count.
So silly and pretty
The actual model looks pretty different from what was in the movie. You would need a shitload of fiber optics and lighting to make a descent model kit, I dont see a lot of people putting down big money for something like that from a 1978 movie except hardcore boomer sci-fi nerds.

Do Russian planes still use mostly analog systems?
if they did then any nation with modern planes can squash them down like bugs.
Enterprise had a saucer section that split, yet only had one main engineering section. Same with this one. If one part of the ship is destroyed, the remaining pieces work fine and can fly solo just like a regular star ship. And yes, three, or even two fully functioning combat ready ships are better than one.
yes, russian copilot must climb onto wing and set timer and direction for missile, is dangerous but well paid
Does the saucer section have warp drive? I don't remember.
yep
I really like the venator-class SD. The prequel ships have grown on me. I didn’t even realize they had SDs or their predecessors in the 2nd and 3rd prequels
What if they don't use microprocessors?
Why fly a ship when you can fly a cyborg spacewhale?
saucer cant go warp, its a giant lifeboat, prometheus has 3 warp capable sections which makes it 3 ships in one which makes zero sense
extremely based
Yes, fully capable warp 9
Surprised this hasn't been posted yet.
Then again, any plane that does can shoot it out of the sky.
You are fighting a modern computer with a an old calculator at this point.
How can one series have nothing but based space ships.

You can just see that there has been put a lot of thought into the ships in the series. They are designed to fight according to the tactics that are used. Also their interior reflects the nations that built them, the imperial ships have luxurious quarters for the high ranked officers, while the FPA's ships are very austere reflecting that they have fewer resources to spare to fight on equal footing.
Business Insider is utter trash. Your posts don't belong on this thread.
I'm not gonna lie, this is glorious.
so say we all
I just wish the ships didn't only fire forward. In my head cannon, there are technological reasons they have to do so. Like those long-range beams require very long, straight amplification tubes. Like a particle accelerator but not curved into a circle. Thus the ships are by necessity also long and straight and can only fire in one direction.
It is by far the largest one in the thread, so yes.
Fool, I never sourced Business Insider. The person arguing with me did.
>Post ship from any SCI-FI
>"SCI-FI"
>commence autistic armchair air force commander shitposting about F-35 program
I swear to fucking god some of you deserve to outright die
What? They do have side facing beam cannons, but it's better to build spinal weapons and gun shaped ships to provide the greatest range while presenting the smallest profile to the enemy.
We need to beat those Ruskies, user. This is a serious matter.
This is also true, I believe there was a Japanese magazine or a dvd release that had concept art with technical drawings of the ships, so the designers took this into account.
You can't get it legally anywhere in the west but I believe there was a thread on Yea Forums where they had all sorts of older animes. The series is mostly about the politics and motivations behind the battles, it is one of the best series I have ever seen.
Don't look at me. I just wanted to post Starfuries. Not my fault the guy bitching about his inferior sci-fi ship had to resort to talking about real planes - and getting beat down in that area too.
>They do have side facing beam cannons
I don't remember them ever playing a part, but if you say so.
>to provide the greatest range
Again, this is head canon - yours this time. Why would this arrangement provide longer range than putting guns just as powerful on the sides and rear?
>presenting the smallest profile to the enemy.
Which is fine until you get flanked, which happens just about every battle in that show.
Ah, Halo gunships, where the ships look like giant guns.
Thanks for this.

From the databooks; those forward neutron cannons seems to take up a lot of space
We break for nobody was peak cinema.
that's technically not a ship.
also for me, it's picrelated
There's some broadsiding in conquest.
Not nearly enough space that putting some side or rear ones would be impractical. And the advantage in flanking defense would far outweigh any extra cost or increase in profile.
Honestly in my head those neutron cannon tubes extended the entire length of the ship.
LEXX was Best
based black lancers
All of those circles on pic-related are side facing cannons, the specs say 40 on each side, and 32 forward facing. I guess piddly side cannons aren't going to save you from a barrage of spinal fire taken to the side.

I remember this one episode where the whle crew of Moia had to cover for him because he decided to blow up some arms dealer ship out of the blue
He detected one of the illegal cargos that Leviathans must never carry, a horrible weaponized gas.
Still, it got supernova-face guy killed (for a while)
>out of the blue
He blew it up because the arms dealer had one of the forbidden cargo for a Leviathan. He did it because he thought he was protecting Moia.
I'm not very keen on the Cabal stuff, it sort of comes across as 40k human stuff that was backward engineered and refined into a utilitarian style. But aside from that yeah, they've pretty consistently knocked it out of the park in terms of visual design.
And while Stark was incorporeal he found Dargo's son and devised a plan to rob a criminal bank for fuckloads of money to buy Jothee and a bunch of slaves to free them.
Keep in mind, he still went against his captain's will. I don't know if he was actually linked to Crais, but a leviathan shouldn't just take initiatives like that.
those episodes were peak kino.
>Article about The Culture
>Uses art from Ringworld
The side cannons are mostly there for point-defense and shooting down fighter or destroyer sized ships.
Crais removed the link as a show of peace to the crew of Moia so they could work out a truce. He had put everything on manual control. Stark then went all Stark-y and started messing with the weapons console. Crichton shut down the console to make sure Stark didn't do anything stupid, but that gave control back to Talyn, who immediately fired on the arms dealer.
But yes - he technically acted on his own and against the will of his pilot. Still, even Moia at times didn't listen to Pilot, such as when her creators called her back to try and de-commission Moia.
>even Moia at times didn't listen to Pilot
True, also when Zhaan was looking for Crichton after they got separated escaping the asteroid field, Moia wanted to fuck off while Zhaan was begging her to stay (something to do with her pregnancy, been a while since I watched).
Man, Leviathans could be dicks sometimes.
Liars, Guns, and Money. Basically started with a clip show that wasn't just treading water and actually progressed the story. Then you get that crazy ass, eyeball obsessed crab woman Natira for some sexy torture.
And then you have the whole fucking heist, fuck I have to rewatch the entire series again.
>Still, even Moia at times didn't listen to Pilot, such as when her creators called her back to try and de-commission Moia.
That's hardly an apt example, a literal God willed his creation to do his bidding, you can't fault anyone for that. Talyn on the other hand wasn't even 3 years old and was dealing with all the shit the Peace Keepers did to him.
yeah senpai, good taste
Pilots get trained to do redundant maneuvers and combat out of tradition or the 1% chance they do find themselves in a situation like that. Kind of like how some armies still practice with bow and arrows. Do you think any modern army today is going to approach your military base with archers lined up in a row?
Of course not, but some are still trained regardless.
No sensible commander is going to risk a 200 million dollar plane trying to shoot down a 20 million dollar plane with bullets.
I always thought FreeSpace would make a good tv series
>That's hardly an apt example
There are others, like as mentioned. Moia was like a horse - she'll do what you want most of the time but that doesn't mean she had no desire or will of her own.
