Cannes 2019

Cannes lineup was just announced.
m.festival-cannes.com/en/infos-communiques/communique/articles/the-2019-official-selection
Here are the films with runtimes. A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick is 3 hours long and it's the longest film in competition so far. Bacurau has Udo Kier in the main role and it sounds great.

is it bad that i never heard of any of these? do they only get well know after cannes?

That depends, you should at least know some of the directors.

I know a few directors names, but I need a synopsis or something to get interested

Dolan back with more faggot shit? no plot on wiki/imdb

>French movie
>The young Ahmed

I also can't find any plot. Only that it's about group of friends in their late 20s. So yes it's going to be gay. Dolan also stars in it.

All this talk about global film culture and Cannes as always favours French directors.

It's Belgian.

>cannes thread

LMAO jesus this board is fucking dead

Nothing that interesting, to be honest.

>Doesn't fight to save Western Civilization.

Maybe, it will be screned Out of Competition.

>Inarritu is the Jury president
Let the most dishonest film win.

Don't they have some quotas for french directors? Each year there are like 3 french films in competition.
Yes. TV shows screen out of competition.

>A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick is 3 hours long

so the most ruthlessly edited Malick movie ever

when will the rest of these idiots wake up from their brainwashing and indoctrination

What are you on about?
Really? I think this year looks pretty good.

Unfortunately, Cannes has degraded itself over the years. By now, films that do well have little or no influence on the global culture. Commercial stuff is favorized. Celebrities, parties, money. It's a week-long fiesta for the rich, pretending to favor social commentary. Not even a Malick redemption film can save it.

Please, let this be good.
After Tree Of Life, he went off the deep end.

Eh not really. Last year and this year was quite heavy on foreign language films if they were being commercial they would have lineup full of american films. Like Venice which is becoming more commercial because it's good starting point for films with Oscar ambitions. As far as social commentary goes each year there are films with similar style. Desaturated colours, social commentary and people being miserable also lots of handheld camera. Like Capernaum last year. This year it seems to be Loach and Dardennes but Dardennes are quite good.
This one had a script apparently, so i'm expecting something like The Thin Red Line, The New World and Tree of Life.

>Refn submitting episodes 4 & 5 of his series
must be some crazy shit if he's gonna jump to the middle like that

oh great more dardenne bros socialist propaganda garbage

I've seen Loach, Dardennes, cinema-verite handheld cameras. There's only so much a person can take. Symbols and metaphors repeat throughout European cinema. It becomes tiresome, fake, pretentious, tedious. Then they take it to Cannes, and it becomes an even bigger farce. Social commentary in the midst of filthiest money in the world.
Venice shouldn't even count, they don't have an ounce of artistic integrity. At least they don't pretend, like in Cannes.

>Nicolas WINDING REFN TOO OLD TO DIE YOUNG - NORTH OF HOLLYWOOD, WEST OF HELL

No Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?

what a sad lineup. Almodovar Dardennes Loach and Dolan are all hacks. only ones I'm excited for are Bellochio and Malick.

Not finished yet.

theoretically they just need to finish it before the festival begins right? i heard Radegund needed to be refilmed a bit because of Udo Kier's death

>the dead don't die
wtf, i thought that trailer was just an april fools joke
now i really wanna see it

Yes there are still 2 or 3 spots in competition which will be announced later. You mean Bruno Ganz and i doubt that Malick would change his movie just because someone died.
I agree but i still don't think that means that Cannes is that commercial. Last year there were some interesting films in the lineup. The handheld verite style is just something that the festival obviously prefers but it seems like there are some other films in comp also. Malick, Jarmusch, Almodóvar, Bellocchio, Bong, Filho, Diao and maybe some other look like they won't have that style.

It's funny how 90% of the directors are considered hacks from this board for no reason at all and their best argument is a copypasta

I've written a long reply that I scrapped. Seems like you still have an optimistic and fresh perspective. Maybe you haven't seen enough films by aforementioned directors, or maybe I'm just jaded and bitter; which, I guess, is the reason why i come to Yea Forums. In any case, I admire your outlook.

>He's never been to Austria and looked at the magnificent grass

Attached: fassbender.jpg (570x377, 26K)

Where's my Quentin Dupieux Kino?
Also Ladj Ly is a based French nigga from hot neighborhood. If his movie is in this, it can be either 1. furiously based or 2. overpretentious shit with style over substance, with social hood message.

Loach and Dolan are the biggest one note hacks of them all my friend

Why would that be?

Are you ready for another Dolan Grand Prix ?
This guy won't ever get a Palme d'or, so pity price at best. Forgotten within the week at worst. (Donovan was pretty lackluster)

What? Udo Kier isn't dead.

I'm looking forward to this, it was filmed close to my home town....

How do they fucking do it? German Alps got nothing on Austrian superb grass.

They didn't favour Dumont who's better than almost everyone in the official competition. Albert Serra going for Un Certain Regard is also disappointing.

What's loachs style? "Social realism"? His take isn't even that fresh. "How miserable it is to be British" has been espoused by legions of other, better directors. Mike Leigh off the top of my head.

And Dolan has no style at all. His aspect ratio fuckery and pop songs mixed with being a genre slut is not compelling the third or fourth time he does it. He's not even 25 anymore so his gimmicks and what little charm he had are wearing thin. Not to mention his obsession with his own sexuality.

He is opening directors fortnight. screendaily.com/news/cannes-2019-quentin-dupieuxs-deerskin-confirmed-to-open-directors-fortnight/5138304.article

Cannes is mostly bullshit but I'm hyped as fuck for the new Dumont, Desplechin and Cavalier.
New Almodovar and Bong Joon-Ho look sweet, also.

Bit disappointed by Céline Sciamma's latest soft lesbian drama though, not audacious enough imo. The lighting was pretty cool but that's about it.

I saw a clip during post-production, Dujardin is hilarious in it. Waiting for more.

Dumont has been wildly sulked since his shift towards absurd comedy, it's an absolute pity.

When will he finally let go of the fish eye meme?

Slack bay was insufferable.

will never understand this opinion, i haven't seen song to song but to the wonder and knight of cups are very stylistically simliar to the tree of life and it's hard for me to imagine someone who really liked tree of life but then didn't like those two (although obviously some critics felt like this). by the by to the wonder is a better film than the tree of life and knight of cups is still pretty great for the first half hour or so before it just starts repeating itself.

>A Hidden Life by Terrence Malick is 3 hours long

You guys haven't watched Jeannette, then. That film was a masterpiece and Jeanne is its sequel, it totally deserved a Main Competition spot.

Sorry, didn't mean to tag you

>Cannes after Spike Lee won
FTFY

>Hidden Life by Terrence Malick is 3 hours long
Why can't malick show some restraint? I bet this will be a tedious watch. The guy has lost it.

why are austrians so autistic?

It's alright my man, Jeanette was by far the best film of 2017. A great shame that its gotten such a small theatrical distribution in France.

Cannes is shit

malick needs to stop with the dishonest meme cinematography, he's become a parody of himself

Not him but The Tree of Life seems like it had a certain structure and a script. I have seen Knight of Cups as my first Malick and hated it. It was just Bale mumbling and going around LA. Later i watched Song to Song and i thought it was pretty great. But it had the same problem as Knight of Cups. Some of the voice over and dialogue is terrible. I should rewatch Knight of Cups since i enjoyed Song to Song but i can understand why somebody doesn't like those films. Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line, The New World and The Tree of Life all had similar process. Malick had a script and later he changed and made the movie while he was editing. It is quite apparent that he didn't have a script while making KoC and Song to Song.
I have only seen Slack Bay and it was obnoxious. I will try watching Jeannette but if it's anything like Slack Bay i will probably dislike it.
The Thin Red Line is 3 hours long and it's great.

>Doubting based Terry

You're my man, same opinion here. Jeannette is a masterpiece.

>based Terry

badlands and days of heaven have a standard narrative structure: i can sort of understand why you would like those two and dislike the rest of his ouvre.
the thin red line and the new world still contain a forward moving narrative but it is becoming disjointed with abrupt shifts in place or time
the third wave of malick then begins with the tree of life and at the very least includes to the wonder and knight of cups. here traditional linear narrative is mostly abandoned. the narrative in these films is cicular and self referential. This best demonstrated in To the Wonder, which is also, as I said, the best of his from his period so far. I don't want to go into spoilers if you haven't seen it and it doesn't match up perfectly but thematically at least we see a circularity reminiscent of Joyce's finnegans wake and t.s.eliot's east coker. Regularly in to the wonder we will have scenes we've already seen expanded upon both in the sense of more footage but also in the sense of more baggage - as we have seen their relationship change since the first time we saw this scene. Of course this repetition has the possibility to become self indulgent or simply boring and to some degree I think knight of cups certainly faulters here but I really struggle to understand the views of someone who really likes the tree of life and then hates to the wonder.

there there Safdies, maybe Venice?

I haven't seen To The Wonder so i can't comment on that. Some people think that his style post The Tree of Life is becoming a self-parody. I think that The Tree of Life had more of an emotional hook than Knight of Cups and Song to Song, also his editing style can be quite abrasive and what works in one film doesn't have to work in another.

Safdies couldn't submit, netflix has the worldwide distribution rights.

as I said it's more self referenial and cyclical which is understandable more devisive than something like badlands. I completely agree that tree of life is a much better film than knight of cups but if this style "clicks" for you then I don't really understand why someone would hate knight of cups while really liking the tree of life. They are too similar to have such diverent responses - knight of cups is more thematically divergent to the tree of life while to the wonder is just a 2 hour film focused on the themes of the brad pitt jessica chastain romance from the tree of life.
