Why is she being shilled so hard now? She was moderately well known for having a supporting role on a soap opera years ago, and now out of nowhere they have her host the Golden Globes and put her in the Time 100, in the "Pioneers" section no less.

There's a definite diversity angle in the write-up, I just find the notion hilarious that this middle aged Asian woman would somehow be paving the way for a young black or hispanic artist, just because they're both "of color".

Why? You can disagree, sure, but it's not a particularly absurd or difficult to grasp concept.

The norm is that white people play the lead roles. And men specifically. So an Asian Woman doing it successfully is dismantling that cultural norm, and making any successive attempts easier and more 'normal' for audiences.

I'm not saying that is right, but it's not some whacky nonsensical idea that makes no sense or anything.

they do though, and as i said, it's the next thing. That's the thing about being progressive. Eventually you achieve your goals and move onto something else.

Because there are countless successful black actors who are many times bigger than her. If the write-up said that she was paving the way for Asian actors that would be fine, but to lump every minority group together when they have nothing to do with one another is silly.

I think really what it's going to take is enough cultural integration for the Asian stigma that pursuing acting is a waste of an opportunity for social progression, to die out. That just takes time, but Asians are insular and their cultural ideas are resilient. There are WAY more liberal parents of all other cultures who think pursuing a creative life is worthwhile and everything isn't just about money.

All the Asian kids i grew up with, their parents, first or second gen immigrants, who mostly worked in kitchens and laundries and shit, would literally have beat their kids if they pursued acting and not medicine or engineering or something.
