the whole point of michael's downfall is that, whether he realized it or not, it stopped being about his family. in fact, his increasing power ended up coming totally at his family's expense. he was a sociopath, a narcissist, and totally lacked the wisdom of his father.

his father, wittingly or not, set this all in motion and teed michael up.

he was injured at the time michael ascended, but the father had had plenty of time to go straight before that, like he'd promised to do.
